In After-Images: Autobiographical Sketches, W.D. Snodgrass offers us his first collected autobiographical prose. A renowned poet and contemporary of Robert Lowell, Randall Jarrell, and John Berryman, Snodgrass takes us from his beginnings in a Pennsylvania milltown, his first loves, music lessons and marriages which provided the genesis of his early poems to his World War II Navy hitch, literary friendships, and personal battles. Finally, the book brings us back full circle, concluding with a sort of double homecoming: a visit by Snodgrass to his hometown, now in severe economic decline, and a rediscovery of his love of music. "Iron and steel work surrounded our city, Beaver Falls; walking the dog at night, you were horizoned by the distant clang and clatter of mills and foundries. We never heard this, though, unless there was a strike and it stopped." showPanel(document.getElementById('lnk_Summary'), 'Summary');

SUMMER 2001
by Ronald Pies TIME AND THE TRAGIC in the Poetry of WD Snodgrass and Wallace Stevens
This sense of time as something that stands outside us, but which is delimited and sanctified by us, suffuses W.D. Snodgrass's poem, Heart's Needle, and stands in marked contrast to the sense of time depicted in the principal works of Wallace Stevens. Before discussing this contrast further, however, I want to place Snodgrass and Stevens in the broader context of recent developments in Western culture. ARNOLD, SNODGRASS AND THE "TRAGIC SELF"
I believe that a proper appreciation of the world of "Heart's Needle" begins with a re-examination of the poet and critic, Matthew Arnold (1822-1888). It is no accident that Arnold's magnum opus was entitled, Culture and Anarchy, since the author was preoccupied with this dichotomy. As J.D. Wilson observes, Arnold saw and deplored "…the deep-seated spiritual anarchy of the English people, an anarchy which expressed itself in its hideous sprawling industrial cities, its loud-voiced assertion of personal liberty, its dismal, stuffy, and cantankerous forms of Christianity…its belief in collision (collision of parties, of sects, of firms) as the only way of salvation." (p. xxxiii).

De/Compositions: 101 Good Poems Gone Wrong Popeye Greater than transcendence is its recognition. ’ I’ll try to posit this basic lack of poetry rudimentarianism as the reason WDS’s later poetry has not been anywhere nearly as successful as the earlier stuff.
I will briefly discuss 2 of WDS’s early, successful poems- which ‘established’ him- in a bit. Let me briefly limn the trajectory of the rest of his career 1 st Heart's Needle
On the other hand, WDS did the trite thing of also attempting to be a literary critic- at which his limitations are obvious- as my later tackling of De/Compositions: 101 Good Poems Gone Wrong will prove. 1975 saw the 1 st book In Radical Pursuit nd book To Sound Like Yourself: Essays on Poetry was released. Not for Specialists: New and Selected Poems by W.D. Snodgrass
BOA Editions 2006
Reviewed by John Deming
Come Around to the Beard W.D. Snodgrass has a sense of humor about his surname; each of his three ex-wives were “more than pleased/to change it back,” he writes. And though it's not nearly as iconic a name as Lowell, Berryman, Sexton, or Plath, a sufficient number of people still pay Snodsy (Sexton's nickname) his dues as a pioneer of “confessional” poetry. Snodgrass, who turns 80 this year, is a bit different from his then-contemporaries. While his early lyrics were essentially autobiographical, he never quite caved in to the self-indulgent despair that other so-called confessionals used both to their advantage and to their detriment. As decades have passed and the term “confessional” has grown uglier and uglier, Snodgrass has put forth a number of different efforts. Not for Specialists collects some of the best and worst of these efforts. It goes without saying that the volume is worthwhile, at the very least, because it may introduce a new audience to his great long poem “Heart’s Needle.” His first book, which carried the same title, won him a Pulitzer Prize and national renown in 1959 ( years before Sexton’s and Plath’s first books); famously, he has not reached that kind of plateau since. But the poem, an astonishing and sympathetic look at his relationship with his daughter once he's divorced her mother, is becoming more and more necessary to the canon:
