Paper Abstract:
Discusses sexuality and homosexuality in "LEAVES OF GRASS." Initial reviews of Whitman's free verse poem. Biography of Whitman. Examples of sexuality and sensuality in the poem. Whitman's conception of sexuality as a physical declaration of life and joy. Epiphany of the body and the soul. Homosexual references. Paper Introduction: Walt Whitman: Sexuality and Homosexuality in Leaves of Grass Introduction In 1855, when Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass was first published, the only good reviews written of the book were by the author himself, anonymously, although Emerson did offer some conditional praise (Hart, 1956; Literary Criticism Series, 2002). One reviewer quoted the 19th century Latin legal euphemism for sodomy, peccatum illud horribile inter Christianos non nominandum, which roughly translates to, that sin which cannot be named among Christians (Schmidgall, 1998). Yet, Whitman still developed a following who understood him to not only be a prophet for democracy, but also a

An interview with W. D. Snodgrass Writer Julianna Thibodeaux speaks with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W. D. Snodgrass about his notoriety as a poet and the process of translating lyric poetry in a visionary way. The troubadours, lyric poets, and poet-musicians of knightly rank who flourished in the south of France in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries are remembered historically with a romant ic air. The troubadours were often well-educated, and therefore highly sophisticated in their poetry and music-making in the service of courtly love.

O world half-known through opening, twilit lids
Before the vague face clenches into light; O universal waters like a cloud, Like those first clouds of half-created matter; O all things rising, rising like the fumes From waters falling, O forever falling; Infinite, the skeletal shells that fall, relinquished, The snowsoft sift of the diatoms, like selves Downdrifting age upon age through milky oceans; O slow downdrifting of the atoms; O island nebulae and O the nebulous islands Wandering these mists like falsefires, which are true

Back in the 1960s, she said, those poems had shocked herhad shocked everyonewith their subject matter: the guilt and anger of the speaker's divorce and the anxious difficulty of maintaining a loving relationship with his estranged young daughter. But the poetry now seemed tame, decorous in its formal restraint, and she had difficulty perceiving what had created such a fuss.
