Text Only 1994: Labour leader John Smith dies at 55 The Labour leader John Smith has died in St Bartholomew's hospital in London after two serious heart attacks. The 55-year-old leader of the opposition suffered his first attack at his central London flat. He had a second heart attack in the ambulance on the way to hospital and was pronounced dead at 0915 BST. He leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth, and three daughters, all in their twenties. The news comes as a shock to his party and the nation. He was regarded as a man of integrity - decent and honest and was widely expected to lead Labour to victory at the next general election and become prime minister. Senior politicians from all parties have paid tribute to Mr Smith and today's sitting of the House of Commons has been suspended as a mark of respect. John Smith trained as a barrister and entered Parliament in 1970 as a Labour member for North Lanarkshire, Scotland. He served as secretary for trade in 1970 and subsequently as Labour spokesperson on economic and industrial issues, developing a reputation as a moderate.

John Maynard Smith was born in 1920 in London. He received a strong education at Eton and Cambridge, from which he graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1941. He then attended University College in London, where he graduated in 1951 with a degree in zoology. Upon receiving his degree, Maynard Smith was offered a teaching position at his alma mater, where he taught from 1951 until 1965. After leaving University College, he was appointed professor of biology at the University of Sussex in 1965, and he is presently teaching there today. He was recently awarded The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences 1999 Crafoord Prize for biology in conjunction with Ernst Mayr and George C. Williams of the United States for their work toward a greater understanding of biological evolution and the adaptation of species to their particular environment (URL, 1). Maynard Smith’s main area of expertise is in genetics, mathematics, and evolutionary biology. Throughout his career, he has concentrated on the fighting strategies among animals, especially within the same species. He feels it is important to understand why animals behave the way they do in nature and the physical encounters that they face against members of their own species. Maynard Smith has conducted research studies of animal fighting strategies and the signals and behaviors that they exhibit before and during battle. Maynard Smith has written many books and journal articles addressing evolution, biology, and game theory, to name a few. Some of these works include

About the Chesapeake Exploring the Bay Captain John Smith's Chesapeake Voyages Four centuries ago, when three creaky British ships made landfall on the mid-Atlantic coast of North America in the spring of 1607, a smart, cocky twenty-something adventurer named John Smith stepped onto the stage of history. Over the next two years, working on behalf of London entrepreneurs who called themselves The Virginia Company, Captain John Smith would play a pivotal role in establishing a tiny, struggling settlement—Jamestown, the first successful English colony in North America. He would also systematically explore the Chesapeake region, traveling the vast Bay and its major tributaries in what amounted to an oversized rowboat with a single canvas sail. Along the way, Smith and his crew would meet, parlay, and sometimes do battle with the Chesapeake 's diverse Native peoples. Today the story of John Smith's expeditions around the Chesapeake has become the stuff of legend, lore, and intensive research by scholars. Smith's descriptions of the Bay region's dense forests and bountiful wildlife and fisheries in his 1608 account “A True Relation of Virginia …” would help fuel the rapid colonization of North America by the English and others. Within half a century of his journeys, the shores of Chesapeake Bay would be forever changed, studded with growing communities inhabited by thousands of colonial settlers. The Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail , designated on December 19, 2006, commemorates Smith’s historic voyages of exploration on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries 1607-1609. As the first national water trail evolves, people will have opportunities to experience the trail and learn the many stories of the Chesapeake from the early 17th century into the future.

Evolutionary biologist John Maynard Smith dies
John Maynard Smith Professor John Maynard Smith, the internationally renowned evolutionary biologist, 84, died peacefully at home on April 19. Maynard Smith was remarkable for the breadth of his contributions to biology, including his radical application of game theory to understanding evolutionary strategies, and his clear definition of the major transitions in the history of life. Maynard Smith was always enthusiastic about new data sources and continued to be a driving force in the use of molecular data to answer biological questions. Like his mentor, J.B.S. Haldane (one of the founders of the modern synthesis of Darwinian evolution and genetics), Maynard Smith was deeply committed to making evolutionary ideas accessible to a wide audience. His book, The Theory of Evolution, inspired many of today's leading researchers to become biologists. Despite his fame, he would nevertheless take time to discuss ideas with undergraduate students and eminent professors alike. Maynard Smith was Emeritus Professor of Biology at the School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex. He joined the University as the founding Dean of its School of Biological Sciences in 1965, and served as professor there until 1985. He remained active in original research until his death, working on the evolution of animal behaviour, and practical issues such as tuberculosis in cattle.

Chapter II What Happened Till the First Supply And now, where some, affirmed it was ill done of the Council to send forth men so badly provided, this incontradictable reason will show them plainly they are too ill advised to nourish such ill conceits. First, the fault of our going was our own. What could be thought fitting or necessary we had; but what we should find or want or where we should be we were all ignorant; and supposing to make our passage in two months with victual to live and the advantage of the spring to work, we were at sea five months, where we both spent our victual and lost the opportunity of the time and season to plant by the unskillful presumption of our ignorant transporters that understood not at all what they undertook. Such actions have ever since the world's beginning been subject to such accidents, and everything of worth is found full of difficulties; but nothing so difficult as to establish a commonwealth so far remote from men and means, and where men's minds are so untoward as neither do well themselves nor suffer others. But to proceed.

The True Travels, Adventures and Observations of
Captain John Smith
in Europe, Asia, Africa and America
Published in London, 1630. Introduced and redacted by Marcia E. Stewart.
A Description of New England (1616) and his remarkable General History of Virginia (1624), which are our most accurate pictures of the land and the story of the earliest settlements. He strived all the last years of his life and spent all his resources pursuing his vision of a New England, and died without ever seeing the fruition of his efforts, thinking that perhaps his life's work had been in vain. On the contrary, we will say that John Smith was the first great American. John Smith was not a Puritan. A simple Christian, certainly, but an English patriot foremost. He was the son of a Lincolnshire farmer, of grammar school education, who gained experience during his epic career as a soldier and sea-captain. His heroic deeds won him honors and the companionship of some of England's greatest Lords. Smith loved America, and foresaw its importance to England, even to the 20th century, when American fleets would save England from enslavement. He here mentions some aristocratic friends who thought likewise, such as Justice Popham, the founder of the Sagadahoc plantation, whose death brought an end to that promising first settlement in New England.

A Conversation With John Maynard Smith
Natural History Sept, 2000 by Jonathan Weiner A classical geneticist and leading theorist in evolutionary biology, John Maynard Smith started out as an engineer and worked as a "stress man" during World War II, calculating the stresses in airplane wings. Since then, he has applied his knowledge of mathematics to some of the greatest problems in evolutionexploring the stress points, the places where the theory threatens to pop its rivets. Maynard Smith is best known for using game theory to explain the jousting matches that one sees among the males of many species, from sticklebacks to sea lions, from stag beetles to stags. "You'd simply expect them to sort of hit the other chap in the groin as quickly as possible," he says, "and yet there's rather little escalated fighting and a great deal of display in settling contests." It's almost as if the combatants are cooperatinga paradox the biologist explains by invoking the mathematics of nonzero-sum contests and win-win situations.
