Welcome to the home page of the Hidden Loft Observatory. I hope you find the site useful, entertaining and informative. There are details on my equipment and observatory, a collection of my images and some technical notes describing my studies and investigations of the various components of astro-imaging. I started imaging in February 2001 and have been enjoying the view ever since. The combination of astronomy, photography and personal computers was just too much a match for my interests to be avoided. I enjoy the challenge of computer processing along with image acquisition. As a result of this interest, I have designed and built an observatory as part of a garage so that the telescope is always ready to go. Tucson gives many good viewing nights, which are sorely needed as I work to develop my skills at this simultaneously demanding and rewarding hobby. A little about me and others in this crazy hobby can be seen here None of this would have been possible without the love and support of my Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Astro-Wife and best friend, Diane. We truly love our life together and love living in Arizona

visiting Washington D.C. Captain John Smith has become a mythic hero in American history, largely because of the myths he himself created. Smith promoted the Virginia Company's interests in the New World and he provided the leadership necessary to save the colonists during the early years of the settlement. Although many of his narratives seem boastful and swashbuckling, his accounts were intended to lure adventurous new settlers to Virginia. Smith's descriptions of the settlement of Jamestown and his encounters with the Indians of the region are invaluable resources of American history. John Smith was baptized in Willoughby by Alford, England, on January 9, 1579. He was the eldest son of George Smith and Alice Rickards. George Smith was a yeoman farmer who most probably worked for Peregrine Bertie (Lord Willoughby). Smith was educated in Alford and later he attended a boarding school in nearby Louth. He also served briefly as an apprentice to Thomas Sewell, a local merchant, but his formal education ended in 1596 when his father died. Smith's mother remarried soon after the death of her husband. In England Smith soon developed an interest in the plans to colonize the New World. The Virginia Company received its charter from King James I on April 10, 1606. In December of the same year, three ships set sail for Virginia; Smith was one of the 144 colonists on board. The colonists landed at Jamestown on May 13, 1607 and James Smith served as one of the seven councilors of the colony.

Did Pocahontas Save Captain John Smith?
by Stan Birchfield
Did Pocahontas actually save Captain John Smith, or did Smith make up the story in order to gain popularity? Professor J. A. Leo Lemay of the University of Delaware has recently written a book on the subject in which he argues convincingly that the story is true. Lemay is the first scholar to have seriously studied the question in over a hundred years, and due to his thoroughness and the modern conveniences that make research so much easier in our century than in previous ones, I believe that his book may well become the definitive work on the subject. In this essay I will try to summarize Lemay's arguments.
History of the Dispute
It is significant that for two-and-a-half centuries after Pocahontas saved Smith, no scholar seriously questioned the validity of the story. By the mid-nineteenth century Smith was as well known to Americans as any figure from American history and was widely regarded as a hero. True, there were some historians and writers who expressed doubts about the romantic nature of Smith's adventures, but this skepticism was rare amidst a chorus of praise. Then, in 1860 the Boston businessman and historian Charles Deane argued in his edition of Edward Maria Wingfield's "A Discourse of Virginia" that Pocahontas did not save Smith. Deane was the first scholar to question a specific detail and to give reasons for disbelieving it. Encouraged by Deane, Henry Adams followed with a full-scale attack in the lead article of the January 1867 edition of

John Smith: The Proceedings of the English Colony in Virginia
The English who initially settled Jamestown in 1607 struggled to survive and a couple of times came close to abandoning the colony. They could not grow food to sustain themselves and they could not subjugate the local Indian confederacy under the chief Powhatan. They understandably feared that he could wipe them out with a concerted attack, while they remained dependent on supplies that his people could supply from their agricultural surpluses. Captain John Smith, for some months the head of the Jamestown colony, regularly encountered Powhatan or contingents of his people as he himself led small groups into the hinterland. They almost always haggled as each sought to assert his primacy over the other. Did the Indians already possess some European-made implements when Smith came to visit them? What kinds of ceremonies did the Indians display? What kinds of ceremonies did the English display? Were the Powhatan Indians fearful of the English or vice versa? Did the English need anything of the Indians? Did the English take advantage of Powhatan in the trade that they conducted? What did Powhatan suspect to be the ultimate motive of the English in coming to his territory? What happened on the second voyage to discover the Bay pass for (1 ) rocks. Yet we prevailed with the interpreter to take with him another interpreter to persuade the Sasquesahanocks to come to visit us, for their languages are different: 3 or 4 days we expected their return then 60 of these giant-like people came down with presents of venison, tobacco pipes, baskets, targets, bowes and arrows, 5 of their Werowances came boldly aboard us, to cross the bay for Tockwogh, leaving their men and canoes, the wind being so violent that they durst not pass.

37. John Smith's Letter To Queen Anne Regarding Pocahontas
Vouching for the integrity and faithfulness of Pocahontas.
http://members.aol.com/mayflo1620/pocahontas.html
John Smith's Letter to Queen Anne regarding Pocahontas
In 1616, word came to Captain John Smith that Pocahontas was coming to visit England with her husband John Rolfe. Captain Smith was concerned that Pocahontas might not be given the reception he felt she deserved, so he wrote a letter Queen Anne to personally vouch for the integrity and faithfulness of Pocahontas. He reveals to the Queen that Pocahontas saved his life on several occasions, and saved the lives of many English at Jamestown. Although Smith humbles himelf before the Queen in this letter (as would any English citizen), it is important to realize he was one of the most famous and influential explorers in England and what he said carried a lot of weight. To the most high and virtuous princess, Queen Anne of Great Britain Most admired Queen, The love I bear my God, my King and country, hath so oft emboldened me in the worst of extreme dangers, that now honesty doth constrain me to presume thus far beyond myself, to present your Majesty this short discourse: if ingratitude be a deadly poison to all honest virtues, I must be guilty of that crime if I should omit any means to be thankful. Notwithstanding all these passages, when inconstant fortune turned our peace to war, this tender virgin would still not spare to dare to visit us, and by her our jars have been oft appeased, and our wants still supplied; were it the policy of her father thus to employ her, or the ordinance of God thus to make her his instrument, or her extraordinary affection to our nation, I know not: but of this I am sure; when her father with the utmost of his policy and power, sought to surprise me, having but eighteen with me, the dark night could not affright her from coming through the irksome woods, and with watered eyes gave me intelligence, with her best advice to escape his fury; which had he known, he had surely slain her.
