Political and Social-Themed Science Fiction
Luke Francl Many people consider science fiction to be trashy, escapist literature, with little redeeming value. I will be the first to agree that there is a lot of science fiction like that. I will even admit to having, on occasion, enjoyed reading such science fiction. Indeed, I have spent many an afternoon curled up with an escapist space opera, enthralled as the cleft-chinned hero saves the day (and the girl!) from the evil aliens. Sometimes, when I'm relaxing, there is nothing better that a cheesy science fiction novel. However, I believe there is no denying that the best science fiction novels are the ones that make the reader think, wonder "what if...", and consider our own world in a different light. This puts the best science fiction in a league with the best literature, period. Because I believe science fiction should not be marginalized by genre, I have compiled this collection of the best political and social-themed science fiction. These books are thought provoking, not just because of the vivid imaginations of their authors, but because they speak about our own world. But what, exactly

My Book List
This page is generated from my library database, which I generated with a bar-code scanner (with some help from the Web). Yes, I really own all these books. Have I read them all? The vast majority, certainly. In this list, there are probably ten or twenty books that I don't ever intend to read. (Don't ask why I own them.) Another ten, perhaps, are books that I intend to read someday, but have never been in the right mood to pick up. And then there are recent purchases (which may not even be on this list yet). The recent-purchase pile is usually one or two books, but it can reach a height of ten or even twenty if I find a juicy new used-book store or go to a con. Then it shrinks. Any book still unread after a month, if not sooner, qualifies as "read-someday". Do I ever get rid of books? Rarely. I have a separate list of the 15 books I have sold or given away. (Please don't write and ask if you can buy books from me. The answer is generally "Sorry, no".) Do I remember what's in all of these books? Hell no. Did I enjoy these books? Mostly, yes. I don't have reviews of my collection, but I have written brief comments about the most recent acquisitions.
