Main October 18, 2007 Scanners Live in Vain! I first ran across Cordwainer Smith in a collection I got for Christmas waaaayy back when. My parent's would buy old copies of Science Fiction Book Club editions at garage sales and yard sales and give them to me each year. One year I got The Science Fiction Hall of Fame (Volume 1), edited by Robert Silverberg. This was a collection of stories that "should have" won the Nebula Award (except for the fact that the award did not exist at that point). Just about every story is a winner , and Smith's entry, Scanners Live in Vain, was definately a tale that turned my world upside down Martel was angry. He did not even adjust his blood away from anger. He stamped across the room by judgment, not by sight. When he saw the table hit the floor, and could tell by the expression on Luci’s face that the table must have made a loud crash, he looked down to see if his leg was broken. It was not. Scanner to the core, he had to scan himself. The action was reflex and automatic. The inventory included his legs, abdomen, chestbox of instruments, hands, arms, face and back with the mirror. In a few short pages, Cordwainer Smith not only paints an interesting tale, but shows a vast background. What are the Beasts? Why do people live in cities and are afraid of the Wild? How many worlds does man inhabit? Why are the Scanners both revered and scorned? What are the "Vomacts"? And more...

Belated Reviews #8: Cordwainer Smith
For this review I'm going to abandon the tastes-change-and-you-may-need-to-appreciate-these-books-as-period-pieces tone I've been taking. I'm also going to adopt a less neutral tone: If you haven't read Cordwainer Smith's science fiction, you should give it a try. There's no guarantee that you'll like his work, of course tastes differ but you owe it to yourself to find out. Not that there's much *to* try. In its most recent mass-market version, his science-fictional corpus consists of four books two novels and two short-story collections. Most of these take place against a common background, the future time of the Rediscovery of Mankind. In this time, fifteen thousand years from now, humanity is recovering from utopia. Things were too safe and too stable for too long, and the result was stagnation and malaise. The Instrumentality the quirky meritocracy that rules the Earth (and is a power through much of the galaxy) decided to shake things up, reintroduce risk and change. One of the main plot elements in Smith's work is the Underpeople intelligent humanoids, genetically engineered from animals, who provide most of the labor in this future. The Underpeople have no civil rights. Not that there's any shortage of other plot elements! Smith's stories are imaginative enough to offer the sense of wonder which is so often missing from the science fiction of authors who grew up reading science fiction.

Idealism and morality in the Instrumentality of Mankind "The Lords of the Instrumentality who are here on Fomalhaut III. There is the Lord Femtiosex, who is just and without pity ... There is the Lady Goroke ... who has shown kindnesses to underpeople, as long as the kindnesses were lawful ones. And there is the Lady Arabella Underwood, whose justice no man can understand." "The Dead Lady of Clown Town" Cordwainer Smith The science-fiction writings of Cordwainer Smith consist of some twenty-odd short stories and two novels, which chart the history of an evolving civilisation over some fifteen thousand years. The history is internally consistent, and each story contributes to a coherent picture of the technological, social and spiritual development of the future described. In real life, Smith was Dr Paul Linebarger, Professor in Asiatic Studies at Johns Hopkins university and colonel in US military intelligence, accomplished linguist and foreign policy adviser to the state department. His writing style, partly inspired by Chinese narrative techniques, more closely resembles poetry than the conventional dry prose of science-fiction, and his stories are dense with literary and historical references and more or less complex linguistic puns. Running through the entire work is a consistent morality and outlook, whose principal themes recur again and again in stories often written many years apart. The broad outlines of Smith's future civilisation can be briefly sketched. Travel between the stars and the consequent expansion of human culture through the universe is made possible by the invention of 'planoforming' ships that travel faster than light, and by the development of novel systems to protect their passengers and crew against the dangers of space. In this new interstellar culture, true humans live lives of privileged ease, while work is done by robots and by 'underpeople', animals genetically modified to have near-human intelligence and form. Over it all presides the Instrumentality, a benign but absolute dictatorship composed of a ruling nobility who use their technological and telepathic powers to maintain the status quo and to dispense an abstract and dispassionate justice. It is against this background that the principal themes of Smith's stories - love, courage, cruelty, hope, innocence, belief - are played out.

Cordwainer Smith news
According to their updated schedule, Baen Books will be publishing a second Cordwainer Smith collection this September, entitled When the People Fell. Smith's total output was fairly small, so this second volume may well make all of his science fiction work available in stores again. Baen's collections have introduced me to some new authors, so hopefully this will bring Smith to a bigger audience. Posted by John Markley at 7:28 AM Labels: Cordwainer Smith Science Fiction

I'm not sure how much will be put in the second collection. The NESFA volumes (The Rediscovery of Man and Norstrilla) are good buys; sturdier than the Baen trade paperbacks. They also have a couple of the non-series stories.
NESFA also has "The Concordance of Cordwainer Smith", a helpful guide for fans!
I recall reading somewhere that Cordwainer Smith wrote a couple of other SF-ish/spy novels (Atomsk?), it would be nice to see them as well.
The Baen "We the Underpeople" has a really stunning cover by Bob Eggleton, I hope the second collection is as nice.

The Lensmen Series
[In previous posts in this series I've focused on stories that have linguists as characters or language as important element of the plot. This post will be a little different—there's not much linguistics in the Lensmen books. Instead, I'm going to focus on the writing style and language quirks of the author. Fair warning, though: spoilers throughout.] Over the last month, I've been re-reading Edward E. "Doc" Smith's Lensmen series (consisting of Galactic Patrol Gray Lensman Second Stage Lensmen Children of the Lens (1947), and two lesser prequels), a milestone in science fiction. Its popularity, huge at the time the stories were being published, has waned over the years, but the influence it had on a wide variety of other SF, including the Green Lantern comic book series, Star Trek , and Star Wars , still remains. You simply can't engage in space opera without standing on Doc Smith's shoulders. The stories are full of space pirates, determined heroes, and a series of space battles of exponentially increasing scale. Just as memorable, though, was Doc Smith's distinctive, enthusiastic lexical, idiomatic, and grammatical inventiveness. First up, though, there is a
