This 8 1/2" by 11" portrait was created in 1973 for the book Planets and Dimensions published by Mirage Press. It was later used by the same company as the frontispiece in The Fantastic Art of Clark Ashton Smith . This portrait, done one dot at a time by stipple method, is off-set printed on high-quality paper.
Clark Ashton Smith was a regular contributor to Weird Tales magazine in the thirties. Clark Ashton Smith and H.P. Lovecraft corresponded for years, their letters collected in books. He's still highly regarded by fans around the world of his exotic fantasy in its many forms.
"Clark Ashton Smith (January 13, 1893 - August 14, 1961), while best known today for his association with H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos, stands on his own as a unique master of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. While Smith thought of himself primarily as a poet and wrote over 700 poems and prose poems, he is better known today for his short stories. Clark Ashton Smith was also a self-taught artist whose paintings, drawings, and sculptures reflect the fantastic worlds of his fiction."from Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.

A CHRONOLOGY OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS
The following listing gives the stories published during H.P. Lovecraft's lifetime (extended to the end of the year of his death) that are considered integral to the Cthulhu Mythos. Some of these were not considered as Mythos stories when first published, but have subsequently been subsumed into the Mythos by more current authors. This chronology only gives the place of first publication and the byline as it appeared therein.
If there is a story that you believe should be included in this chronology, we would be more than willing to listen to your reasoning of why it should be so. You can either email us at the address at the bottom of the page or enter the information in our guestbook, accessed from our main page.
NOTE: If for a particular publication the year and/or the date are blank, they are they same as above.

Atlantis
By Clark Ashton Smith
Above its domes the gulfs accumulate..
Far up, the sea-gales blare their bitter screed:
But here the buried waters take no heed—
Deaf, and with welded lips pressed down by weight
Of the upper ocean. Dim, interminate,
In cities over-webbed with somber weed,
Where galleons crumble and the krakens breed,
The slow tide coils through sunken court and gate.
From out the ocean's phosphor-starry dome,
A ghostly light is dubitably shed
On alters of a goddess garlanded With blossoms of some weird and hueless vine; And, wingéd, fleet, through skies beneath the foam, Like silent birds the sea-things dart and shine.

Part I: The Averoigne Chronicles
by Ryan Harvey
In the beginning, there was Clark Ashton Smith… …in the end, there was Clark Ashton Smith. Smith was a one-man literary movement, an alpha and omega unto himself. Although a major early fantasy innovator whom many later writers credit as an influence, he did not begin an ongoing trend in fantasy fiction as some other pioneers did. Contrariwise, he seems to have borrowed his style from almost no one. He was, and is, a unique and unclassifiable talent in the field of fantastic literature. His uniqueness accounts for how little he is published or read today, even though his name always finds its way into discussions of his two compatriots at the pulp magazine Weird Tales , H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. But while they continue to find larger and larger readerships with mainstream editions of their work, Smith has fallen into limbo. Clark Ashton Smith lived most of his life in Auburn, California, near the foothills of the Sierras in the placer mining region. Today the city of Auburn proudly celebrates its Gold Rush history in its beautifully maintained historic district. But the shade of the city's greatest artist (not only in prose, but also in poetry, sculpture, and drawing; the illustration above is one of his works) remains elusive. Outside of the historic buildings and the gleaming city hall on its private hill, Auburn is a bland contemporary suburb of Sacramento, filled with traffic jams on the freeway, chain hotels, and strip malls packed with Targets, McDonalds, and Best Buys. Considering that Smith once wrote that "America's worst enemy is not Bolshevism but its own rank and shameless commercialism," I have no problem imagining what he might think of his hometown today.

79. BIBLIOHOLICA: Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series
smith, clark ashton Hyperborea (apr) cover by Bill Martin; Dunsany, Lord Don Rodriguez Chronicles of Shadow Valley (may) cover by Bob Pepper
http://phantasma.onza.net/biblio/lists/baf.html
BIBLIOHOLICA: Specific List * Ballantine Adult Fantasy series Ballantine published this mass market paperback line during the period of 1969 to 1974, with Lin Carter as its editorial consultant. Basically, books included in this line bear the "Unicorn's Head" colophon, but several others have just the word, "A Ballantine Adult Fantasy" on the upper left corner of its front cover. The titles included in this line somewhat vary because several books acquire "Unicorn's Head" logo in later printings. The closing date of this series is unclear, too. There are two types of "Unicorn's Head" logo. The first logo, I think, is for the first year titles. Others have the second version (simplified) logo.
I've listed the "essential" Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series books which Lin Carter indicated in his "Imaginary Worlds," and 1st printing titles with Unicorn's Head logo after the publication of the said title. Also listed here is the titles which could be called "pre-" Ballantine Adult Fantasy series. Lin Carter himself stated that he would have published them had they not, and although none of the titles bears the Unicorn's Head colophon, he listed them as a sort of preface to the Series proper. Note: The information here is based on my own BAF series collection and I do not claim this list is complete or definite. Please feel free to correct or add information. (There are several earlier titles, namely Tolkien books, I do not have in my library yet..... Cover images not shown will be uploaded when I dug them out from my collection.
