To me as to a curious god. The Star-Treader Clark Ashton Smith. Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) is best known for his prose poetry and horror/fantasy fiction, and often considered as influential as 'Cthulhu Mythos' architect H.P. Lovecraft and 'Conan' creator Robert E. Howard. Smith's writings were published in over fifty magazines including 'Weird Tales', 'Amazing Stories' and 'Wonder Stories'. Self-taught, Smith also experimented with paintings, drawings, and stone sculptures, which were the focus of his creative impulse from the late 1930s until his death. Although Smith wrote many tales in the Cthulhu Mythos genre popularised by Lovecraft, he also created many memorable settings such as the medieval realms of Averoigne and Malnéant, and the dying civilization Zothique. His hyperborean tales extended the Cthulhu Mythos timescape into new environs for the Old Ones, and many of Smith's creations and genre innovations were utilised by Lovecraft himself. Another key difference to Lovecraft was that Smith's tales featured more prominent female characters. His heroes battled both Romantic and Misanthropic impulses, and were more likely to be thieves or rogue magicians than Lovecraft's cosmic-gazing intrepid adventurers. Consumed by an ever-present fear of death, Smith's characters only won their battles against stronger adversities on few occasions. They capture aspects of the human psyche not readily apparent in modern civilization. The allegation that Smith was just an imitation Lovecraft is blatently false.

The Sanctum of Clark Ashton Smith
Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961), perhaps best known today for his association with H.P Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos , is in his own right a unique master of fantasy, horror and science-fiction. While he considered himself primarily a poet, and wrote over 700 poems and prose poems, it is for his short stories that he is best known today. Clark Ashton Smith was also a self-taught artist whose paintings, drawings and sculptures reflect the phantasmagoric worlds of his fiction. The Eldritch Dark is a site to facilitate both scholars and fans in their appreciation and study of Clark Ashton Smith and his works. "The nostalgia of things unknown, of lands forgotten or unfound, is upon me at times. Often I long for the gleam of yellow suns upon terraces of translucent azure marble, mocking the windless waters of lakes unfathomably calm; for lost, legendary palaces of serpentine, silver and ebony, whose columns are green stalactites; for the pillars of fallen temples, standing in the vast purpureal sunset of a land of lost and marvellous romance. I sigh for the dark-green depths of cedar forests, through whose fantastically woven boughs, one sees at intervals an unknown tropic ocean, like gleams of blue diamond; for isles of palm and coral, that fret an amber morning, somewhere beyond Cathay or Taprobane; for the strange and hidden cities of the desert, with burning brazen domes and slender pinnacles of gold and copper, that pierce a heaven of heated lazuli." Clark Ashton Smith
H ailed as "The New Keats" by the San Francisco press, he drew the serious attention of Ambrose Bierce, George Sterling and Jack London when his first poems were first published in 1911. Despite this early literary success and the fact that he lived a mere hundred miles from the vibrant metropolis, he chose a quiet, solitary life in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. There he would pass his years in relative obscurity, though he gained some small fame as a key contributor to the legendary Weird Tales pulp magazine in the early 1930s. From his cabin on Boulder Ridge, Clark Ashton Smith evoked distant times on earth such as Poseidonis and Hyperborea of the past and Zothique of the far future and conjured up new worlds with a magical melding of science fiction with fantasy and prose with poetry.

A review by William Thompson
Advertisement Shifting sands and forgotten ruins. Oriental towers and odalisques. Medieval castles and haunted woods. These are but some of the fictional realms of Clark Ashton Smith, worlds of dark wonder and necromancy; familiar paths that imperceptibly veer into other realities where horror and often death await. Clark Ashton Smith was but one of the big three most often associated with the heyday of the seminal pulp publication, Weird Tales , for which Smith contributed just over sixty short stories at a penny a word. Along with Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft, both of whom Smith corresponded with as well as mutually influenced, these three authors helped to define and establish during the second quarter of the twentieth century, both for good and ill, many of the tropes and conventions that have been passed down in commercial fantasy and are still in evidence today. However, while Howard and Lovecraft's legacy has become secure, by comparison Smith's contributions have suffered from forgetfulness and neglect.

Unnumbered Reviews #3: Clark Ashton Smith
The Big Three fantasists in the 1930s were H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith. Smith was probably the best wordsmith of the three, but he wasn't driven the way Lovecraft and Howard were. His stories (overall rating of ** for story and ****- for style on an uncalibrated four-point scale) are the hardest of the three to characterize. The settings had a lot in common with Howard's (he was placing stories in Hyperborea before Howard was placing stories in the Hyborean Age), but his characters were a lot less heroic often being the sorts of wizards, thieves, and despots that Conan would have for lunch. The creatures his characters tended to encounter had a lot in common with Lovecraft's, but Smith was far less interested in milking a story for its horror. Where Lovecraft's characters would gaze into cosmic madness and shudder, Smith's would prosaically get eaten. But every bite would be a pleasure to read. Clark Ashton Smith was a poet, and it showed in the care with which he constructed his prose, as well. The language was carefully chosen for its sound, its cadence, and the images it was meant to convey. (I imagine this was a disadvantage in a market that was paying about a penny a word.)

10.1 Biography of Clark Ashton Smith
The Star-Treader and Other Poems , and had published his strongest collection, The House of Orchids and Other Poems , which delighted Ambrose Bierce, who sadly just missed meeting Smith face-to-face. Sterling introduced Smith to the poetry of Baudelaire at the age of 19, and the San Francisco press 'discover' him as "Boy Poet ... Poetic genius ... Ranking with th Best of Keats and Byron ... New Shelley" and the like. Over three years, he sells more than 1,000 copies of his first book of poems (relatively speaking, a best-seller). From ages 20-28 he suffers poor health, including a nervous breakdown. Bierce dies, too soon to have granted Smith the international attention he intended to provide. His grotesque paintings and drawings are exhibited in New York and on the West Coast, but he gives away far more than he sells. At the age of 27, in just ten days, he writes his greatest long poem, The Hashish-eater; or The Apocalypse of Evil
