Charlotte, North Carolina Students at Highland Renaissance Academy take a test in Charlotte, North Carolina. Charlotte-Mecklenburg is an example of successful district-wide reform promoted by the standards movement and carried out by an innovative school superintendent who used the pressures of state standards to obtain the resources needed to lift achievement among poor and minority students. Pushed in the 1990s by Presidents Bush and Clinton, and applied by states like North Carolina and Texas, the standards movement held school districts accountable for showing clear improvement among all categories of students, not just the fortunate minority in affluent schools. Charlotte, with 148 schools and 121,000 children, became one of the movement's first major success stories after Eric Smith took over as superintendent in 1996.

By guest author Charlotte Cornwell, PR executive, On Tuesday I was part of the film review team for Richard and Judy . The venue was the Odeon in the Printworks , Manchester and the film to be watched and reviewed was Charlie Wilson’s War , recounting the covert US intervention in the Afghan war, starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The thought of watching a free film for the Richard and Judy TV show, before it was even released to the public, made me feel very ‘VIP’ but my worry was the looming knowledge that I would have to be filmed individually to review the film after watching it. Now, I’m no Barry Norman and my depth of film knowledge and vocabulary is embarrassingly non-existent, so my nervous but positive mumblings of “It was great – I really enjoyed it and the acting was superb” certainly did not reflect my usual opinionated self! The film, however, really was fantastic and I’d recommend it to anyone. The fact that the lead actors were huge blockbuster stars didn't detract from the sincerity of the acting; they gave real depth to it.

Hey. I'm C. My best friend is P, who i met in my first year of St Bedes high school in Lytham, Lancashire, England. Against all odds, despite me moving away to a different St Bedes in Ormskirk near Liverpool, we're still best friends at aged 18. Around two years ago we haphazardly decided-
"I know! Lets not go to uni, lets bum around the world for a year"
I don't know who's idea it was originally but the other one said ok... we deferred entry. Since then we've both been working round the clock to save enough money... me at the Acropolis chip shop in Ormskirk, Paula at the Bar and Grill at Ribby Hall in Wrea Green. I've ran two jobs at once for a while, 15 hour days and Paula dresses up in a duck/squirrel costume... nothing could make me do that, apart from maybe this.
So here we are. C and P. We are 18. We really like mooses. We drunkedly got the same tattoos on alternate feet on our birthdays (hers is on the 2nd August, mine on the 3rd, what were our mothers thinking) saying WATLO- stands for we are the lucky ones. We congregate around "the tree", my best friends are "the anus crew" (i hope you're happy my family might come on this), i live at a crazy house with my mum (i dnt know how they cope) and sister Chloe (brainbox, very proud), my stepdad Ian, my stepbrothers Nick and Mark (STAY AT COLLEGE), my beautiful dog connor who never stops barking (unless he's chewing his foot off) and hamster Miles. My big brother Michael lives with his partner Hannah in Manchester. I am also an aunty Charlotte I have a nephew called TJ but he is not old enough to read this. I will miss everyone.

Charlotte Smith Charlotte Smith is pleased to be working with Margaret Birtley and Veronica Bullock as Administration and Information Officer at the Collections Council of Australia. Following her graduation in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in French and Italian, and a Diploma in Languages in Spanish, Charlotte lived in England for two years where she held the position of Assistant Manager of the Ashmolean Museum Caf©, Oxford. This experience highlighted Charlotte’s passion for the arts and her interest in the collections sector was developed through the rich cultural environment of the museum. Valuable administrative skills were also obtained in this role. Charlotte recently completed a Master of Arts in Curatorial and Museum Studies from the University of Adelaide. The Graduate Studies in Art History and Curatorial and Museum Studies postgraduate program, unique to South Australia, is unlike any other course offered in Australia as the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions of the Art Gallery of South Australia are central to tuition. As the program is taught by gallery and museum professionals, students gain competency in the theoretical and practical aspects of collections in a range of art museums, galleries and libraries. Charlotte is excited to be involved in the Collections Council of Australia and looks forward to contributing her enthusiasm to the position.

Deborah Kennedy Saint Mary's University, Halifax D iane Long Hoeveler's Gothic Feminism The Mysteries of Udolpho (xvii), and her detailed and engaging commentary makes one want to read these novels again. The book begins with an analysis of Charlotte Smith's Emmeline, the Orphan of the Castle , showing how its plot will be mirrored in so many subsequent works that follow the virtuous young heroine as she negotiates the dangers of the patriarchal world. Although Hoeveler attempts to rescue Smith's novel from neglect, this is perhaps the least interesting section of her book. The fault is not with Emmeline Things immediately improve, however, with the following two chapters on Ann Radcliffe. Hoeveler presents readers with an analysis of four major works in the gothic literary tradition:
