Assistant Coach
Charlotte Smith-Taylor, the most decorated player in the history of the University of North Carolina women's basketball program, is in her fifth season as an assistant coach at UNC. In addition to her duties at her alma mater, she remains active as a professional player, currently with the WNBA's Indiana Fever. Smith-Taylor, who starred for the Tar Heels from 1992-95, is the only UNC women's basketball player to have had her jersey retired. The 6-foot forward who wore No. 23 was named National Player of the Year by ESPN in 1995 following a career in which she scored 2,094 points (third all-time at UNC) and grabbed 1,200 rebounds (second all-time at UNC). She is perhaps best known for her performance in the 1994 NCAA Championship game, when her buzzer-beating three-pointer gave UNC the national crown with a 60-59 win over Louisiana Tech. She also had a championship-record 23 rebounds in the game and was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player. The Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in 1992, Smith-Taylor earned All-ACC and ACC Tournament MVP honors in her junior and senior seasons as the Tar Heels claimed back-to-back conference crowns.

The Romanticism of Charlotte Turner Smith:
    Plurality of Vision
According to some critics, Charlotte Turner Smith, (1749-1806), "was the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic" (Curran, Intro, The Poems of Charlotte Smith ). The first edition of her Elegiac Sonnets , written in 1783 while she was in debtor's prison with her husband and children, brought her sudden fame. Her most direct beneficiary among the canonical male poets was William Wordsworth who says in an essay that Smith was a poet "to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered" ( The Prose Works of William Wordsworth: Critical and Ethical , Vo III). Smith, as with many other women writers of the period, was largely forgotten by the second half of the nineteenth century. My paper, "The Romanticism of Charlotte Turner Smith: Plurality of Vision," is not only an exploration of her aesthetics and politics, but also an effort to begin to begin the process of remembering. Charlotte Turner Smith embodies oppositions through the blurring of boundaries between disparate forces. But the harmony that Smith represents does not obliterate differences; rather, her inclination is to accomodate a multiplicity of positions at once. As Smith opens her text to opposing voices, she melds the dualities of the inner and the outer, the private and the socio- political, the material and the spiritual to form an organic whole that suggests connections and possibly the reconciliation of opposites. In my paper, I will discuss Smith's poetics in terms of her attempt to reconcile conflict by asserting the necessity of connection in two of her works

    Charlotte Smith
Like Cowper and Clare, Charlotte Smith elevated the ordinary details of the natural world into suitable subjects for poetry. She also helped to establish natural history, and poems about natural history, as suitable subjects for children [see, for example, Harriet Ventum, Surveys of Nature (1802); John Aikin, The Calendar of Nature (1816); Mary Elliott, The Rambles of a Butterfly (1819) and The Sunflower, or Poetical Truths for Young Minds (1822)]. Smith s poems often had a theological function: the wonders of the deity 's creation revealed the wonders of the creator. These poems, however, also set forth a strong sense of the interconnectedness of living things and of the poet s ability to apply human categories to the nonhuman world. Smith s poems remind us of a genre that was increasingly widespread by the time that William Blake was producing his own imitations (and perhaps parodies) of such lyrics: The Lamb, The Tyger, The Fly, The Sick Rose. According to Stuart Curran, Smith was the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic Poems sensibility of nature to a more purely Romantic sense of the power and strangeness of a nonhuman world that is, by turns, both comforting and alienating.

lib-spec@uiowa.edu The Charlotte M. Smith Collection, a gift to the Libraries in 1996, currently numbers some 4,000 titles. The books are less than 3" tall or wide and most are smaller in both dimensions. Principally collected by Charlotte M. Smith (1919-2002) of Newton, Iowa, the books range in date from the 17 th century to the present. The range of subjects is equally broad, but many of the books concern, as well as demonstrate, arts of the book. The collection was exhibited in 1996 and that exhibition has been preserved virtually as Tiny Tomes . Mrs. Smith also wrote two articles for Books at Iowa "The Joys of Miniature Books " and "The Tamazunchale Press: A Bibliographic Checklist ". Finally, Mrs. Smith's papers and the records of the Tamazunchale Press form MsC 457 ; the link leads to the finding aid for that collection.

In recent years the central position held by Charlotte Turner Smith during the formative years of the British Romantic period has become increasingly clear. Although Wordsworth rightly foresaw her status as a poet ‘to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered’, in our time her fortune has turned and her poetry has been restored to the canon where it manifests a range of metrical experimentation and intellectual resilience unmatched by any other woman poet of the time. Less attention has been paid to Smith’s eleven novels and two fictional adaptations from the French because few of these have been reprinted until recently, and the majority have never been reprinted at all. This edition, however, will reveal the extent to which Smith’s work in this form constitutes as significant an achievement as her poetry, representing the turbulent decade of the 1790s on its social and political, as well as literary, planes with an unparalleled richness of detail and an unblinkered vision. Whatever subgenres of the novel Smith engages – gothic, sentimental, domestic, political – she informs with her distinctive social consciousness, which in an increasingly repressive climate is steadfastly liberal and broadly inclusive. In her concentration on the plight of women and of those dispossessed by warfare Smith stakes claims far in advance of her time.

Charlotte Smith (b. 1974), U.S. college basketball player. As quoted in the New York Times, p. C7 (April 3, 1994). On shooting a three-point basket at the game-ending buzzer to carry her team, the University of North Carolina, to the National College Athletic Association's women's basketball championship. Smith had made only eight of thirty-one three-point attempts all season; her coach was Sylvia Hatchell. Trailing 59-57 with less than one second left to play, North Carolina beat the favored team from Louisiana Tech 60-59. Comments about Charlotte Smith
