Smith, Charlotte (Turner)
4 May 1749 - 28 October 1806
English poet and novelist who never wrote a "Gothic" work. So what's she doing here? Simple: she helped invent the Gothic, in large part due to the influence of her works on Ann Radcliffe . (She also helped invent Romanticism and William Wordsworth
There are "Gothic" elements in only a few of Smith's early works, for by her own admission she was uninterested in literary sensationalism and in the supernatural; adverse financial circumstances (a profligate and irresponsible husband, largely) led her to novel-writing in the first place (she preferred poetry), and the success of her first novel, Emmeline (1788), showed her that sales could be positively affected by the inclusion of the sorts of dramatic scenes she was writing. But her own interest in political and social issues, heightened by her first-hand experience with the early moments of the French Revolution, led her away from even the quasi-Gothic traces in her first three novels: Emmeline: The Orphan of the Castle Ethelinde, the Recluse of the Lake

Born into a well-to-do family and raised in Southern England , at the early age of fifteen, Charlotte Turner married Benjamin Smith, the son of a wealthy East Indian merchant. His wealth, however, did not last and in 1783 Charlotte found herself imprisoned for debt with him for several months. At that time she decided to publish some of her poems to support her ever-increasing family. The volume Elegiac Sonnets of 1784 achieved instant success. Charlotte put down her thoughts in the form of

CHARLOTTE SMITH (1749-1806)
Charlotte Turner Smith was born in 1749, and in 1764, married to Benjamin Smith.
Benjamin Smith was a heavy drinker, bad gambler, and overall a lousy husband. (Fletcher,
Charlotte and Ben proceeded to have twelve children. (Fletcher, 30-35) Ben was
horrible with finances, and the task of providing for the Smith family fell upon Charlotte.
She began writing, and eventually published numerous works between the years of 1784 and
posthumously in 1807. She led a very harsh life, and was against arranged marriages.
She attributed most of her misfortune to her marriage, likening herself to a slave.
Charlotte Smith paved the way for many female authors who were to follow her, and
helped to carve out the Gothic genre, an up and coming classification of novels. What
child rearing meant to Charlotte Smith is a total devotion to her children. She was the sole bread winner, and continued to support them after they were married with children of their own.

Charlotte Smith English writer

born May 4, 1749, London, Eng. died Oct. 28, 1806, Tilford, near Farnham, Surrey Desmond tells of the innocent love of a man for a married woman) and political ideas of class equality (inspired by the French Revolution) gained her notoriety, but her work belongs essentially with that of the derivative 18th-century romantic tradition of women novelists. Elegiac Sonnets and Other Essays, which she had published in 1784, had been well received, but because novels promised greater financial rewards, she wrote, after some free translations of French novels, Emmeline; or, The Orphan of the Castle (1788) and Ethelinde; or, The Recluse of the Lake Desmond appeared in 1792 and was followed by her best work, The Old Manor-House (1793). Toward the end of her life, she turned to writing instructive books for children, the best being Conversations Introducing Poetry for the Use of Children Charlotte Smith Link to this article and share the full text with the readers of your Web site or blog-post.

Charlotte Smith (1749-1806)
Written near a Port on a Dark Evening
Huge vapours brood above the clifted shore,
Night on the ocean settles dark and mute,
Save where is heard the repercussive roar
Of drowsy billows on the rugged foot
Of rocks remote; or still more distant tone
Of seamen in the anchored bark that tell
The watch relieved; or one deep voice alone
Singing the hour, and bidding "Strike the bell!"
All is black shadow but the lucid line
Marked by the light surf on the level sand,
Or where afar the ship-lights faintly shine
Like wandering fairy fires, that oft on land
Misled the pilgrimsuch the dubious ray
That wavering reason lends in life's long darkling way.
Retirement
He may be envied who with tranquil breast
Can wander in the wild and woodland scene,
When summer's glowing hands have newly dressed
The shadowy forests and the copses green;
Who unpursued by care can pass his hours
Where briony and woodbine fringe the trees,
On thymy banks reposing, while the bees

My recent paintings and installations continue my exploration of materials and painting processes. Paint drops stack up and form intriguing little piles. These pieces visually relate to pointillism in an abstract way. The strangeness and density of the dots intentionally draws in the viewer. This new series of paintings are purposefully obsessive. The installation pieces visually relate to the paintings with the multitude of small plastic pieces utilized.
