February 6, 2005 Kirkcaldythe birthplace, in 1723, of Adam Smith and, by extension, of modern economicsis also, of course, where your Chancellor of the Exchequer was reared. I am led to ponder to what extent the Chancellor's renowned economic and financial skills are the result of exposure to the subliminal intellect-enhancing emanations of this area. In the broad sweep of history, it is ideas that matter. Indeed, the world is ruled by little else. As John Maynard Keynes famously observed: "Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from intellectual influences, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. Madmen in authority, who hear voices in the air, are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back." Emperors and armies come and go; but unless they leave new ideas in their wake, they are of passing historic consequence. The short list of intellectuals who have materially advanced the betterment of civilization unquestionably includes Adam Smith. He is a towering contributor to the development of the modern world. Xobni Man Walking Some thoughts from an entrepreneur
Other Silliness It’s been a while since I’ve written. Life just hasn’t been the same since getting real users. I feel like blogging is kind of like deep sleep – it helps you organize your thoughts and recent things you’ve learned. Since launching at , though, I’ve been facing all kinds of new challenges. Some of that terrain is behind me now, so I have a long list of great things to write about. I was thinking recently about my grand strategies for life. How do I make really important decisions? What principles do I want to inspire my actions? First, I want to kick ass. I want to be effective, and that means hitting hard. I still remember Xobni’s first summer. I worked until about 6am when the sun came up. That forced me to go to sleep. Then I rolled out of bed and started writing code in my boxers. We took a few hours off a week to be social, and we read new Paul Graham essays as they came out, but that was it. That was probably the hardest I’ve ever worked for such a long stretch, and it was really tough. Really tough.

Executive Summary:
Adam Smith is best known for The Wealth of Nations, but professor Nava Ashraf believes another of his works, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, presaged contemporary behavioral economics.
About Faculty in this Article:
Nava Ashraf is an assistant professor in the Negotiation, Organizations and Markets unit at Harvard Business School. Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, first published in 1776, helped create the discipline of economics with its conjuring of the invisible hand, self-interest, and other explanations of market forces that have influenced academics, governments, and business leaders ever since. But it's the insights from one of Smith's earlier works, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, that caught the attention of Harvard Business School professor Nava Ashraf and coauthors Colin Camerer and George Loewenstein. In "Adam Smith, Behavioral Economist," published in the summer 2005 edition of

Two pieces of small news have just entered the feed room... One) I was recently blogged (although very, very briefly) along with Halligan . You can see the post here . I'm the small link below all of Halli's full color glory. Two) Things are pretty crazy around here at Adam Smith art camp. I've been frantically designing and making an expansion on the tintype pin in preparation for the American Craft Show. I'm turning it into a small line that is a little darker than my other jewelry. I had a problem for a little while where I would sacrifice my vision for what I thought was more marketable. That didn't work like I thought it would, and it made me unhappy, so now I'm doing what I want. And it is certainly making me happy.

Mase Gaffney comments Nic's chapter cited here is probably the best treatment of Smith you'll ever find. I've added some notes, and a quibble at the end. I had occasion to discuss Smith's view of land taxes in "Land and Taxation." I said: “Adam Smith (The Wealth of Nations. New York: Random House, 1937 [first published in 1776], pp. 777-78) offers four maxims of taxation that were widely accepted and quoted by subsequent classical writers: II. The tax which each individual is bound to pay ought to be certain, and not arbitrary. . . III. Every tax ought to be levied at the time, or in the manner, in which it is most likely to be convenient for the contributor to pay it. . . .

Adam Smith Dates:
Born: 1723 in Kirkaldy, Fife, Scotland
Died: July 17, 1790 in Edinburgh, Scotland Biography:
Adam Smith was an important Scottish political philosopher and economist whose famous work Wealth of Nations (1776) set the tone for work on politics and economics for many people even through today. This was, in fact, the first comprehensive effort to study the nature of capital, the development of industry and the effects of large-scale commerce in Europe. Smith's fundamental argument was that individuals should be allowed to pursue their own private economic interests as much as possible and so long as they do not violate basic principles of justice. In this way, Smith thought, they would do much more to further the public good and public interests than if the same people were to try to help the public deliberately and intentionally. Smith called this the "invisible hand" of the market - although everyone is acting in their own self-interest, they are led to achieve the good of all as if by an "invisible hand" of economic forces. Therefore, outside interference will inevitably lead to disaster. This became known as

Adam Smith - Libertarian Find out YOUR V ery few authors have done as much as the shy Scotsman Smith (1723-1790) to show that society does fine when people are free. While Smith didn’t originate many ideas, his big book The Wealth of Nations (1776) was the most impressive and influential presentation. He critiqued Britain’s colonial empire and its system of trade restrictions known as mercantilism. He explained how society prospers when private individuals peacefully pursue their self-interest. He affirmed the benefits of competition. He anticipated public choice economics by telling how government officials pursue their self-interest expanding their power and spending more of the taxpayers’ money.
Smith’s book The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) explored human motivations other than self-interest. He delivered thoughtful lectures on jurisprudence. He corresponded with the leading thinkers of his day. Adam Smith offers readers much wisdom and pleasure.

Tips from NextWeb on how to make your Web 2.0 site look great, without the now typical shadow effects, 3d and bling. Main points: use lots of whitespace, carefull selection of typography, and grey scaling. So what is it that all these site have in common? 1. Grids and white space
Order your site with mathematical precision, create a grid where each column has a certain width, and stick to that format. Another thing is making things stand out not by making them really big, but by adding a lot of white space around it, some things on Hulu just needs to be clicked because there is noting else that catches the eye. Mark Boulton wrote a good tutorial about it

Adam's Info Archive This site's purpose is to provide a place where I can easily share information which can then be easily retrieved by anyone on the Internet. I'm setting this up because I'll often figure something out after an unfruitful search on the Internet for a solution. This site will allow me to share those solutions with others. However it is not limited to problems and solutions. I will post anything that I wish to share with the world, whether it is a solution to a problem, a joke I thought to be funny, or a philosophical thought. This site used to operate off of ASP scripts which connected to a backend Access database. Since I switched over to a UNIX web host it now runs off of PHP and MySQL. This way I can quickly and easily add to it and it can be easily accessed by visitors. Although they are not very refined, the source code for both ASP (final) and PHP (ongoing development) versions have been posted. At this point there is not a lot of organization. I will probably add more later. I suspect that most of my visitors will arrive through search engines which will automatically direct the user to the entry of interest, and thus structural organization is not the most important thing. Please feel free to contact me for any reason. I really like to hear from my site visitors. (

Adam Smith and the American corporation
That brilliant Scottish idea, the one that accomplished something like an intellectual miracle, and stripped away all things the rest of the world, and the whole of the world, took for granted. It said all of the sociality that is present to the creation of any social moment, the existence of prior understandings and connections and an assignment of status according to who owns what to whom as established by kinship, clan or hierarchy, or some other social overlayall of this we can set aside. For this thing called a market, we need only posit two parties, as unattached atoms, engaged only by their interest, and only for the duration of this exchange of value. That's all. They will have social connections, they will be something to someone for some purposes, and they will be this over time and space, but in this thing called a market, they are atoms with interest transacting. C'est, as the French say, tout. (Sorry. I was in Montreal all day.) It was a simplifying idea, and a liberational one. It released the world from cultural constructs and social elites, and it made the world responsive to what people wanted in spite of social assigned standing, status and desire. It enabled a world that was responsive, not to what people were supposed to want, but what, for better or worse, and often worse, they did want. (I will tell you in confidence that I am the only anthropologist on the face of the earth prepared to make this argument. Where I see liberation and transparency, they see alienation and anomie. To which I say, freedom is grueling difficult and only people with tenure think otherwise.)

Welcome to the website. John Wiley, the publisher, has brought out a new edition of Supermoney, as part of its "investment classics" series, with a new preface by John Bogle, the founder of Vanguard. Supermoney was the Adam Smith book that introduced Warren Buffett to the world, and a new Buffett chapter leads off this edition. Warren was good enough to provide a new quote for the book, which is on the front cover: "In this book, Adam Smith says I like baseball metaphors. He's right. So I will just describe this book as the equivlaent of the performance of Don Larsen on October 8, 1956. For the uninitiated, that was the day he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history." We appreciate the metaphor, but this book is about money, and psychology, and crowdsand only about baseball in the metaphors.
