May 26, 1996
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Jane Smiley 's latest novel, "Moo," is a work of fiction, a farce, an academic comedy, which describes life at an agricultural university in the United States. I know it was written with UC Davis is mind. Smiley denies it, but trust me on this one. It's all about UCD. Apparently, a lot of people have figured this one out because "Moo" is a paperback best-seller in Davis. It's a best-seller in other places, too, but I'm convinced people are buying it here because they know the cast of characters. In a recent interview, Smiley said she was prompted to create the fictional Moo University because she lives in Ames, Iowa, and teaches at Iowa State University. "There was just so much funny stuff," she said "and I always wanted to write both a tragedy and a comedy on the same theme. 'A Thousand Acres' was the tragedy, the theme was American agriculture and technology, and 'Moo' was the comedy." But she insists that "Moo" is not a roman a clef and that she had no inside knowledge about the academic goings-on at Iowa State, much less Davis. "I'm out of the loop," she said. OK, we'll believe her.

Reading "In Search of Lost Time"
You will spend 70 days in a row with this man, and you will be charmed and offended and amazed and sometimes bored, but you will be lucky. By Jane Smiley Pages 1 "In Search of Lost Time," I called the real literary types that I happen to know the ones who make their livings by being famously well-read and I asked them if they had read the whole thing, too. Mostly this was to introduce the idea that I had read the whole thing but I thought it was a good idea to first show deference to their superior reading programs before happening to mention this accomplishment with which I had impressed myself. Mais non! as they say in France. Yet all of them knew someone who had read all seven volumes; that person was Richard Howard, who introduces the Modern Library edition of the novel. I wondered: Could he be the only one other than me and Alain de Botton, who wrote "How Proust Can Change Your Life"? If so, I am here to tell you, we are a lucky group, and it is time for you to begin, because reading all of Proust is not hard. First, you buy all seven volumes in a uniform edition mine came in a six-book set and you arrange them in a row next to your bed, the bathtub or your favorite chair, wherever you are most comfortable reading. For a few days, let's say no longer than a week, you glance at them from time to time and pick them up and look at the covers. You can even flip the pages but don't read anything. You are familiarizing yourself with this new acquaintance. You are coming to recognize his appeal. You are letting him impose upon you, because for the next 70 days or so, you are going to organize your free time around him.

    "Good Faith"
(Reviewed by Shannon Bloomstran MAY 28, 2003) Some people over the age of 30 remember the '80s for its excesses, including, but not limited to, really big hair and really synthesized music. It's a bit disconcerting to someone who graduated from high school in 1984 to hear my former favorites (yes, I'll admit it) Duran Duran and the Talking Heads played on our local "oldies" station. To others, the excesses of the '80s played out not in cans of Sebastian Shaper Hair Spray but in dollars and cents. Jane Smiley's latest novel

Jane Smiley Reveals: Moonbat Lawrence O'Donnell Is an Agent of Karl Rove!
Establishment liberals really let their hair down at the Huffington Post, where they think only their fellow moonbats are watching. When journalist Lawrence O'Donnell of the McLaughlin Group posted " John Edwards Is a Loser O'Donnell's main objection to Silky Pony is what you would expect from a liberal. By taking ultra-left votes from Osama bin Obama-Winfrey, he could tip the primaries to Shrillary and go down as "the Southern white man who stood in the way of the black man." From Smiley's response, thoughtfully entitled " Shut Up, Larry However, I am fairly sure in my own mind that Karl Rove paid him to write that post. Jane is anything but smiley as she goes on to shriek that Edwards is "the only candidate in the race who understands how corporations are poisoning American politics and American life with their unrestrained power and influence," that Americans are too racist to vote for blacks, that the sinister Diebold manipulated the New Hampshire primaries, that Rudy Giuliani is "psychopathic," that Karl Rove is "finagling the Democratic primary race," et cetera, et cetera, until the nurse came and made her take her medication. Did I mention that both of these kooks are members of our intellectual establishment?

Gregg Araki plays a very special role in my personal cinephilia. I first discovered his films on video the summer of my 19th birthday. The Living End Totally F***ed Up and The Doom Generation were my introduction to independent queer cinema. They played a key role in my own coming of age, sexually, intellectually and politically.
A few months later I was living in Tokyo, where I was lucky to catch a rare screening of his Three Bewildered People in the Night . At the same time, his latest film, Nowhere , became a cult hit with me and my friends. There was a certain naivet© in Araki's films which helped me identify with both the confused characters and Araki himself as a young filmmaker. His films - like the novels of Brett Easton Ellis or Douglas Coupland which I was reading at the time - seemed intent on bringing to life characters we all knew existed but where nowhere to be seen in the popular culture.
Araki's films were a bit clumsy, a little naive and they refused to take themselves too seriously. A film like
