  • John Skelton 1460?-1529
English poet, satirist, translator, and playwright.
    INTRODUCTION
    Biographical Information
Little is known about Skelton's early life. He was born around 1460 in the north of England, perhaps in Yorkshire. He took a degree from Cambridge University around 1478, and his first poem, Elegy on Edward IV, appeared in 1483. Around 1488 he entered the service of Henry VII. Also around this time he was given the title of “poet laureate” of Oxford; the title of laureate was also conferred on him by the University of Louvain in 1492, and by Cambridge in 1493. During his early years in court Skelton wrote a number of lyrics and short poems and also published translations of Cicero and Diodorus Siculus. His activities at court at first were those of a rhetorician, humanist, and scholar, but around 1494 he was named tutor to Prince Henry (later Henry VIII), a post he held until 1501. In 1498 Skelton took orders as a clergyman, being ordained first as subdeacon, then deacon, and finally priest of the Abbey of St. Mary Grace. During his years of religious study he composed a number of religious lyrics as well as his most important early work

    Skelton, John ( c.
English poet. He was tutor to the future Henry VIII, under whom he became poet laureate in effect, if not in name. His satirical poetry includes political attacks on Cardinal Wolsey , such as Collyn Cloute (1522). He also wrote Magnyfycence (1516), the first secular morality play in English. Skelton was born in Norfolk and studied at both Oxford and Cambridge universities. He became a priest in 1498 and was given the living of Diss in Norfolk. His first recorded verses were composed on the death of Edward IV (1483). Phyllyp Sparowe A Ballade of the Scottysshe Kynge The Tunnyng of Elynour Rummynge Collyn Cloute , and Why come ye nat to Court (1522) all combine attacks on the growing influence of Wolsey with criticism of humanist learning.

John Skelton - Godfather of Rap Ample proof that rap has been around for 500 years John Skelton lived from the 1460s until 1529. He came after Geoffrey Chaucer and Sir Thomas Mallory. He preceded Spenser and Shakespeare. He was a young man when Mallory's "Le Mort d'Arthur" was published, and he was old when Sir Thomas More's "Utopia" came out. Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It John Skelton (1460?-1529), English poet and satirist, born probably in Diss, Norfolk, and educated at the University of Cambridge. He was a tutor to Prince Henry, later Henry VIII The Bowge of Court (1498) was a satire of court politics that Skelton wrote just before stepping out of court life and becoming a clergyman. He did not stay out of court long, however, returning to serve in various capacities. Skelton was ordained a priest in 1498 and became rector of Diss about 1502. He was also adviser to Henry VIII. He is best known for his satirical poems attacking the court and the corruption of the clergy. Skelton's verse is written in a unique style known as Skeltonics: short, alliterative lines with a persistent repetition of the same rhyme that maintain a vernacular tone, the repetitive rhymes giving the lines a “breathless” rhythm. His poems include Collyn Clout (1522) and Why Come Ye Not to Court?
