John Skelton (c. June 21 English poet , was born at Diss in Norfolk He is said to have been educated at Oxford . He certainly studied at Cambridge , and he is probably the "one Scheklton" mentioned by William Cole as taking his M.A. degree in 1484. In 1490 Caxton writes of him, in the preface to The Boke of Eneydos compyled by Vyrgyle , in terms which prove that he had already won a reputation as a scholar. "But I pray mayster John Skelton," he says, "late created poete laureate in the unyversite of Oxenforde, to oversee and correct this sayd booke ... for him I know for suffycyent to expowne and englysshe every dyffyculte that is therin. English poet. Appointed court poet to Henry VII in 1488, Skelton became a tutor and eventually an adviser to Henry VIII. In 1498 he took holy orders. He wrote political and religious satires in an individual poetic style of short rhyming lines, called Skeltonics. Among his poems are Bowge of Courte , satirizing life at court; Phyllyp Sparowe , lampooning the liturgical office for the dead; and Ware the Hawke , attacking an irreverent priest. In 1516 he wrote the first secular morality play in English, Magnyfycence . The satires Speke, Parrot (written 1521), Collyn Clout (1522), and Why Come Ye Nat to Courte? (1522) were directed against Cardinal Wolsey and humanist learning. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "John Skelton" from the 32 Volume Skelton, John - Tudor poet and satirist of both political and religious subjects whose reputation as an English poet of major importance was restored only in the 20th century and whose individual poetic style of short rhyming lines, based on natural speech rhythms, has been given the name of Skeltonics. 'Vales Pierius' John Skelton is buried in St Margaret's Church, next to Westminster Abbey, London, England. (Also buried here is Sir Walter Ralegh (See map...ref. no 35) Little is know about Skelton's early life - however he certainly studied at Oxford University where gained a Laureate - a kind of degree in rhetoric. He was also created a Laureate by Cambridge and Louvain Universities. In 1488 he entered the court of Henry VII where he remained for most of the next 40 years. He was the tutor to Henry VIII for five years and also wrote a satire of court life entitled Bowge of Courte which was printed by Wynkyn de Worde in 1499. In the early 1500s he left court to take up a post as rector of St Mary's Church Diss, Norfolk. However he scandalised his parishioners by flaunting his wife and child and in 1511 he was dismissed and returned to court life in London.

Photo of John Skelton by Paul Wells
    Biography
John Skelton is probably best known to American audiences from his work with The House Band, with whom he has recorded 5 albums on the Green Linnet label. He has also released a solo album, One at a Time , on Pan Records, Holland's leading acoustic music label. John has performed at all the major folk festivals in North America and Europe and has given concerts in over 20 countries. He is also an experienced flute teacher and has taught at summer schools in North America, Europe, and Africa. John's roots lie in Irish traditional music. His grandfather and great-grandfather were flute and tin whistle players. He was born in London and returned there to live during the seventies. This was a "golden period" for Irish music in London. Bobby Casey, Roger Sherlock, Raymond Roland, Danny Meehan and many others were out playing and it was in this "hothouse" of great music that John spent his formative years. He first began to play professionally with the Irish band Shegui, and for six years he toured throughout Europe with them. That band included pianist/fiddler John Coakley (later of The Boys of the Lough), fiddler Tommy MacCarthy (now a leading light in Boston's Irish scene), and singer Sean Keane (brother of the great Irish singer Dolores Keane). He joined The House Band in 1987 and since then has been a central figure in that band's success. He has toured the world with them, and on stage, his marvelous introductions and stories of life on the road have become central to their concerts, with one American newspaper gong as far as to refer to him as "the English Garrison Keillor!" He is, however, better known as an accomplished and distinctive flute player.
