Overview: The Goal I.B. Singer Center Resources for Teachers Building for the Future After a long wait to obtain approval from the Tel Aviv municipality to build, to perform various surveys, and to obtain a construction permit, construction on the Isaac Bashevis Singer Humane Education Center, on the grounds of the SPCA in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, is at last set to begin. The round front of the 60 sq. meter building will be glass, to let in maximum light. One or more colorful stained glass windows depicting the connection, communication, and love between humans and animals, created by world-renowned stained glass artist Jeremy Langford, will grace one wall. (You can see examples of his work at www.langfordartglass.com A rounded bridge over water and rocks will lead the way to the entrance. The sides and back will be made of Jaffa stone, an ancient, light-colored stone native to the area. The roof, made to look like a shell, will emphasize the connection to living things. Inside, a sunken circle will allow children to sit on the rim, for group activities. A moveable wall can separate computers, which will be used by students to research school papers about animals and animal issues, from the rest of the room. It will also provide extra wall space for hanging animal art or serve as a projection screen. A sink will be convenient for cleaning up after art activities.

    INTRODUCTION
    Biographical Information
Singer was born in the Polish shtetl of Leoncin, near Warsaw, to parents of devout rabbinical families who intended him to become a religious scholar. Singer's interests lay elsewhere, and early in his life he began reading secular literature. This dual exposure to strict religious training and nonecclesiastical ideas is demonstrated in Singer's fiction, where faith, mysticism, and skepticism regularly conflict. In 1908, Singer and his family moved to Warsaw, where he spent most of his youth. In 1917, he and his mother moved to his grandparents' shtetl in Bilgoray, and, upon his return to Warsaw in 1921, Singer enrolled in a rabbinical seminary. Singer left school in 1923, began proofreading for

I am Gimpel the fool. I don't think myself a fool. On the contrary. But that's what folks call me. They gave me the name while I was still in school. I had seven names in all: imbecile, donkey, flax-head, dope, flump, ninny, and fool. The last name stuck. What did my foolishness consist of? I was easy to take in. They said, "Gimpel, you know the rabbi's wife has been brought to childbed?” So I skipped school. Well, it turned out to be a lie. How was I supposed to know? She hadn't had a big belly. But I never looked at her belly. Was that really so foolish? The gang laughed and hee-hawed, stomped and danced and chanted a goodnight prayer. And instead of the raisins they give when a woman's lying in, they stuffed my hand full of goat turds. I was no weakling. If I slapped someone he'd see all the way to Cracow. But I'm really not a slugger by nature.
