Isaac Bashevis Singer was born in 1902 in Leoncin (the family moved to Radzymin , often erroneously cited as his birthplace, some years later), a village inhabited mainly by Jews near Warsaw in Congress Poland , then part of the Russian Empire . His birthday was most probably November 21 , which would concur with the date and month he admitted in private to his official biographer Paul Kresh , his secretary Dvorah Telushkin ( p. 266), and with the historical events he and his brother refer to in their childhood-memoirs. Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991) - pseudonym Warshofsky Polish-born American journalist, novelist, short-story writer, and essayist, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. Singer's chief subject is the traditional Polish life in various periods of history, largely before the Holocaust. He has especially examined the role of the Jewish faith in the lives of his characters, who are pestered with passions, magic, asceticisms and religious devotion. According to Singer, "A good writer is basically a story-teller, not a scholar or a redeemer of mankind." "I started to "write" even before I knew the alphabet. I would dip a pen in ink and scribble. I also liked to draw —horses, houses, dogs. The Sabbath was an ordeal for me, because it is forbidden to write on that day." (from A Day of Pleasure Isaac Bashevis Singer was born Icek-Hersz Zynger in the town of Radzymin, near Warsaw, Poland. His father was a Hasidic rabbi; Bathsheba, his mother, was the daughter of a rabbi. When Singer was three the family moved to Warsaw, where his father supervised a beth din , or rabbinical court, where he acted as a rabbi, judge, and spiritual leader. Singer also spent several years in Bilgorai, a traditional Jewish village. He received traditional Jewish education and became acquainted with Jewish law in Hebrew and Aramaic texts. All in the family liked to tell stories and at a very young age Singer started to invent his own tales.

A review by Neil Walsh
This story was first published in Yiddish in 1969, and was translated into English by the author in 1982 under the title The Golem . In 1996 this Sunburst edition appeared on the scene and recently a copy found its way to the offices of the SF Site, to become the most requested book of the month by our staff of reviewers. A golem, if you've never heard the term, is a magical creature out of Jewish mythology. He's made of clay, and imbued with life through Cabbalistic magic and/or divine intervention to assist the Jewish people in a time of need. This version of the golem myth is presented as a children's story, although it doesn't pull punches. It's more like one of the original blood-and-guts versions of the popular fairy tales. The persecution of the Jews is told bluntly, and the absurdity of the false accusations and sham trials is made obvious to all. But persecution is only one of the many themes here.

Isaac Bashevis Singer
Translated by Nina Michalak
Aleksandra Ziolkowska-Boehm: What is your message to the men and women of letters? Isaac Bashevis Singer: That they meet three conditions. First, that they have a story to tell. Present-day literature is increasingly careless about that. We do not have to adhere to Aristotle's rules for writers, but it is imperative for the storyteller to have a good story to tell. A consuming desire to get published makes writers forget that their mission is to describe human experience. Second, have a passion, a need to tell this particular story as opposed to some other one. I remember a time when I had a good theme but no passion, so in the end I wrote nothing. Third, it must be your story. You must be convinced that no one else is able to describe it so well. It is not easy to have such a conviction. It only comes to the greatest writers. It is important to write about what you are familiar with, what you know best. Have your own story, your own topic. When you read the Bible, you do not know what somebody was thinking, but you always know what the person was doing... It is a heresy of our times to use our thoughts and moods as the yardsticks in appraising almost everything that is around us.

    Biography
In one of his more light-hearted books, Isaac Bashevis Singer depicts his childhood in one of the over-populated poor quarters of Warsaw, a Jewish quarter, just before and during the First World War. The book, called In My Father's Court
Singer began his writing career as a journalist in Warsaw in the years between the wars. He was influenced by his elder brother, now dead, who was already an author and who contributed to the younger brother's spiritual liberation and contact with the new currents of seething political, social and cultural upheaval. The clash between tradition and renewal, between other-worldliness and faith and mysticism on the one hand, and free thought, secularization, doubt and nihilism on the other, is an essential theme in Singer's short stories and novels. The theme is Jewish, made topical by the barbarous conflicts of our age, a painful drama between contentious loyalties. But it is also of concern to mankind, to us all, Jew or non-Jew, actualized by modern western culture's struggles between preservation and renewal. Among many other themes, it is dealt with in Singer's big family chronicles - the novels, The Family Moskat The Manor (1967), and

  • Richard Bernstein's review of '' Shadows on the Hudson (December 31, 1997)
''One tends to think of posthumously published works as mainly of historic interest, brought out for the sake of completeness, and this would certainly be justified in the case of Singer, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. But this book, translated by Joseph Sherman with skillful editing by Jane Bobko and Robert Giroux, is a significant event, a major addition to the English-language Singer oeuvre. It is a startling, piercing work of fiction, a book with a strong claim to being Singer's masterpiece.''
  • Just Like a Singer Tale: Questions for a Yiddish Sprite (January 14, 1998)
In a follow-up to his review, Richard Bernstein considers why other criticsand Singer himselfwere less enthusiastic about ''Shadows on the Hudson.'' Bernstein suggests that it may be the unusually dark tone of the work that has caused such an ambivalent reaction. NEWS, INTERVIEWS, AND SPEECHES
