Iain Sinclair: Revolutionary Novelist or Revolting Nihilist? by Ben Watson (this esssay was written shortly after New Labour won the general election and is hitherto unpublished) The publication of Downriver in 1991 established Iain Sinclair as a well-known author. With the exception of the Daily Telegraph , all the broadsheets trumpeted his virtues: 'imaginative power' ( The Times ), 'searingly vivid' ( The Observer ), 'revivifying' ( The Guardian ). The Financial Times was so impressed its eulogy dared to reference Marxist terminology: 'Brilliant poetic dissection of the squalor, greed, criminality and madness of both super- and sub-structure of London today'. The reviewers were right to be enthusiastic. Downriver is a terrific book. Its no-holds-barred linguistic onslaught and its disdain for collusive gentility mark it out from the run-of-the-mill middle-class novel. Further, Sinclair's command of street talk makes Irvine Welsh and Will Self read like tongue-tied sixth-formers. In terms of literary technique, Downriver is innovative in the manner of classics like James Joyce's Ulysses Journey to the End of the Night or William Burroughs' Naked Lunch . But this is no empty formalism: the divisive social effects of the 80s 'boom' reverberate in every phrase. Anyone writing polemics about the state of Britain today should learn from his explosive, brain-bursting prose. Subjectivist and paranoid, it registers psychic truths missed by the mere citation of statistics.

In this unusual novel, Sinclair draws a powerful portrait of London's criminal character by mingling secrets of the modern city with menacing personas from its Victorian age. A clan of profiteering book dealers becomes obsessed with the 1888 Ripper murders in the Whitechapel district of the East End.Reissue. Reflecting on the nature of fiction and history, this novel combines a spiritual inquest into the Whitechapel Ripper murders and the dark side of the Victorian imagination with the story of a posse of seedy book dealers, hot on the trail of obscure rarities of that period. Maps of the London Underground: Iain Sinclair and Michael Moorcock’s Psychogeography of the city Brian Baker Dark Lanthorns (1999), a book designed to mimic the look of a late 1960s London A-Z streetmap, there is a reproduction of a map of the London Underground system. This design classic, a rounded rectangle at the centre of a system of arteries and veins, is faded, the ink blurred with damp. The print, blue-black on white (rather than the now more familiar colour reproduction), is indistinct, the lines receding beneath surface like veins below the skin, the names of the stations lost. The basic shape, if not the stations themselves, is legible, however, and indicates one of the ways in which Londoners (and visitors to London) orient themselves. The first maps of the underground followed lines of geography; the current design is geometrical, space and distance compressed, London given comprehensible form in one diagram. This London Underground, an abstraction of the network of tunnels and stations that make up the transport system, is not a ‘true’ representation of the city, but allows the traveller to see a totalised (and therefore entirely comprehensible) map of its design.

17. Wide Boys Always Work: Iain Sinclair And The 'London Proletarian Novel'
1 This article examines the way in which elements of what I will call the proletarian alertness of iain sinclair s contemporary, neomodernist writing
http://www.literarylondon.org/london-journal/september2003/bond.html
Wide Boys Always Work: Iain Sinclair and the 'London Proletarian Novel' Robert Bond Lights Out for the Territory Sinclair labels this tradition that of the 'London proletarian novel', when he refers to Emanuel Litvinoff and Bernard Kops as two of its practitioners. In the sole academic essay that I have been able to locate that treats these London proletarian novelists, Michael Woolf notes how Kops's The World is a Wedding (1963) and Litvinoff's Journey Through a Small Planet (1972) together focus on 'the question of material improvement and upward mobility'; crucially, these ghetto memoirs show that 'relative material and intellectual success is not an untroubled process'. I want to suggest that the London proletarian novel foregrounded the relentless work ethic which sustains social mobility in particularly interesting ways, and that this writing's concern with the capitalist work ethic is sustained in Sinclair's writing. This preoccupation with the work ethic and with material aspirations, of course, could itself lead us to question whether these London novelists really were 'proletarian' novelists: the London proletarian novel is largely a writing of the proletariat leaving itself. Yet it nonetheless provides us with a valuable interrogation of the work ethic, one which I want to argue is developed in Sinclair's nonproletarian, neo-modernist writing. When he lamented once that 'even proletarianization of the intellectual almost never creates a proletarian', Walter Benjamin was noting that educational privilege 'almost always remains strong enough to exclude intellectuals from the constant state of alert, the front-line existence, of the genuine proletarian'. Sinclair's writing, I will suggest, shows proletarian alertness precisely in its foregrounding of the relentlessness of the capitalist work ethic. Yet this proletarian quality of alertness produces in Sinclair's writing what Benjamin called the 'only' effect 'that a revolutionary writer from the bourgeois class can resolve upon today': 'the politicization of his [its] own class'.[

You can see the symbol of the eye in the triangle on the wall there. A lot of bodies have been dug out of graves; it’s a fake Gothic church that’s been overwhelmed by a gothic reality.” Spend time with Sinclair, either in book form or in person, as we’re doing one overcast afternoon in an overgrown Victorian cemetery, and your surroundings rapidly become richer than you suspected them to be. It’s such investigations of the cityscape, both physical and emotional, that make up London: City Of Disappearances, a compellingly immersive new literary compendium edited by Sinclair. Sinclair’s vision of London, and that of the 50-odd other writers and artists – including Will Self, Marina Warner, Alan Moore, Stewart Home and JG Ballard - who have contributed pieces to the book, is inimical to chainstore homogeneity, willfully at odds with the “City Hall version of London” and the airbrushed projections of the Olympic Committee. “The reason for doing the book in the end was a sense of threat, a sense that there is a mendacious, top-led voice that gives descriptions of London that I can’t recognise at all. You look at the River Lea and at the moment it’s just a carpet of green algae filled with dead fish and dead dogs. All the Olympic building work is on top of toxic sites – glue factories, piles of maggoty bones – and you can’t clear all that overnight, which is what’s constantly attempted and never works, so you end up with some freakish compromise that looks like JG Ballard’s science fiction.”
