This was followed by Red Leaves, Eleven Hours, The Bronze Horseman, The Bridge to Holy Cross, (also known as Tatiana and Alexander.) The Summer Garden and The Girl in Times Square.
edit Quotations from The Bronze Horseman:'
"Tatiana nervously looked down at the present. “Thank you”. Gifts wew not something she was used to.Wrapped gifts? Unheard of, even when they came wrapped only in plain brown paper. “No. Open first. Then say thank you.” She smiled. “What do I do? Do I take the paper off?” “Yes. You tear it off.” “And then what?” “And then you throw it away.” “The whole present or just the paper?” Slowly he said, “Just the paper.” “But you wrapped it so nicely. Why would I throw it away?” “It’s just paper.” “If it’s just paper, why did you wrap it?”"
“There will be only one standard, the standard of survival at all cost, and it will be up to you to say at what price survival.Hold your head high, and if you are going to go down, go down knowing you have not in any way compromised your soul.” Pulling him by the arm, Babushka said “That’s enough. Tania, you do whatever you have to do to survive, and damn your soul.”

(Paullina Handler) Russia Search Authors Search Books About Paullina Simons Paullina Simons was born Paullina Handler in the Soviet Union where her fourth novel 'The Bronze Horseman' is set. She lived with her engineer mother and civil lawyer father and uncle and aunt and cousin in the two rooms in which her heroine Tatiana would live with her family. Her paternal grandfather lived through the first deadly winter of the siege of Leningrad before joining the Red Army in 1942. In 1968, when she was five, her father was arrested for anti-Communist agitation during the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. This agitation included writing letters to the Pravda newspaper advocating the rule of law. He was jailed for a year, then sent to the GULAG for two. After he returned in 1971, he was exiled to Tolmachevo where he melted metal and moulded concrete for telephone poles. However, his years in prison gave her father the time and the opportunity to do a life-changing thing. Yuri Handler learned English.

13. All About Romance Novels: Interview With Paullina Simons
That book was paullina simons The Bronze Horseman, a World War II novel set in the Soviet Union during the blockade of Leningrad.
http://www.likesbooks.com/paullinasimons.html
January 19, 2002) In 2001 a book was published that struck a chord with our readers. It was talked up on our message boards and even spawned a discussion group of its own. That book was Paullina Simons' The Bronze Horseman , a World War II novel set in the Soviet Union during the blockade of Leningrad. When I read this book I was amazed at how much it affected me. I read it and re-read it and then read it a third time for good measure. I hadn't realized how hungry I was for something different until I picked up Simons' book. When I finished it for the first time, I knew that this was the best book I'd read in long, long time. It was certainly the best book I read in 2001, and both the hero, Alexander, and the heroine, Tania, moved right up to the top spots on my list of favorite heroes and heroines. Since The Bronze Horseman affected me so much, I was eager to interview Paullina Simons, who graciously agreed even though she was very close to the due date for delivering a baby. Most of this interview was conducted before the birth of her baby, but part came after. I only hope to have it together as well as she does when my husband and I are lucky enough to have a baby! Let's begin.

Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind remains the blueprint for the genre, while Tolstoy's War and Peace carries off the literary honours ... it's quickly apparent that the Russian-born author Paullina Simons has the measure of this kind of epic romantic saga. The power of her descriptive writing, the vividness of the historical detail and, most of all, the strength of her central characters mark out her novel as a considerable achievement ... she is able to make some powerful statements about the durability of the human spirit, but never at the expense of descriptive passages refulgent with power and beauty' Barry Forshaw, amazon

The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons
Alexander and Tania are both equally stubborn and despite her promise to Alexander to stay with her family, she follows him to Leningrad when his leave is over. Once together again, their lives quickly take several turns that will lead them on a desperate attempt to leave the country and force Alexander to let Tania go without him.
It is a little out the "norm" for me, but I had heard so many good things about it that I really wanted to read it. It is a little too romancey for me at times (especially the above mentioned second half) but at it's core, it is a story about war; about sacrifice; about hardship; and about love. Most of the time, I didn't want to put it down, although there were a couple of instances where I wanted to throw it against the wall!!
"Buy food like you will never see it again." Alexander to Tania as her family decides how much of their savings to spend for food when the war breaks out.
Significance of the books' title: The Bronze Horseman is a poem written by Russian Alexsandr Pushkin in 1833 about the great statue of Peter the Great in St. Petersburg (Leningrad). Considered to be one of the most significant works of Russian Literature, its subject is the conflict between the needs of the state and the needs of its citizens. Both Tania and Alex love the poem and a copy of it plays a significant part in their lives and provides a connection between them. There is a fascinating legend about the statue you can read about
