Bonjour! eBrochures Contact ... The Biggest Dinosaurs Gallery in Europe Georges Simenon , before moving to Paris in 1922 to seek his fortune as a writer. Within five years he had established himself (under various pseudonyms) as a writer of popular fiction. Simenon lived in France until 1945 and then moved to the USA for a decade, before returning to Europe and settling in Switzerland where he died in 1989. During his career, he produced on average four or five novels a year, alternating between the much-loved Maigret detective novels and more serious works. He enjoyed critical and commercial success, and was elected a member of the Belgian Royal Academy, President of the Mystery Writers of America Association in 1952 and President of the Jury at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival. He was also made a member of the French Simenon's estimated 450 novels and short stories have been translated into 55 languages and have sold approximately 1.4 billion copies.

    A Biography.
    By Pierre Assouline.
    Translated by Jon Rothschild.
    Illustrated. 447 pp. New York:
    Alfred A. Knopf. $32.50.
n the latter years of Georges Simenon's prolific writing life, when he had already published close to 400 novels, Alfred Hitchcock was said to have telephoned, only to be told by Simenon's secretary that he couldn't be disturbed because he had just begun a new novel. Hitchcock, knowing that Simenon was capable of writing one novel or two or three every month, replied, ''That's all right, I'll wait.'' Charges of facile productivity dogged and irritated Simenon from the start of his career as a newspaper reporter in 1919, when he was one month shy of his 16th birthday. At the youthful age of 29, he was already defending the ease with which he churned out fiction. ''I haven't written that much,'' he insisted. ''I've only published 277 books.'' He said his ambition was ''to produce semiliterary novels as a step toward rising to the class of a Jack London, or, who knows?, maybe one day a Conrad.'' At his death in 1989 at 86, Simenon's writings had been translated into approximately 50 languages and sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide; many, including some featuring his most famous character, Inspector Maigret, had been turned into money-making films.

    Maigret

    The Belgian Writers
    SOME FAMOUS BELGIAN WRITERS...
Due to the existence of two main languages in Belgium: French and Flemish (Dutch), there is a dual literary production. I will concentrate on the best-known authors that received acclaim outside Belgium, and outside the French or Dutch domain.
Their fame was obtained in very different literary genres but all were astounding individuals, their biographies being as interesting as their works!

    OUR SELECTION

    MORE ABOUT BELGIAN LITERATURE
There is now more documentation available on-line about the Belgian literature. Among others, we recommend the following pages, in English, published by the magazine FRANK
    • Belgium: A Literature Apart - translated from a short but very informative article by JL Outers, about the Belgian literature in French language.
    • FRANK ONLINE 15 - Their 'Foreign Dossier' , in English, is devoted to Belgium. It gives extensive examples of translated texts by contemporary French language Belgian authors. Good selection forming an interesting package. Some illustrations by well-known Belgian artists, such as Magritte Alechinsky Bury and Broodthaers.

Most of his works, including his classic series of short novels about Inspector Maigret, have been translated into English. Simenon, who was born in Li¨ge, established himself in Paris in 1922, and in 1930 he began the famous Maigret series of detective novels, which he published under his own name. Through the dozens of novels in which he appears, as well as through many films and television adaptations of them, Inspector Maigret, of police headquarters in Paris, has become as well known as Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Maigret, a sensible and tolerant but not brilliant man with simple tastes, puzzles his way to the solution of his cases by patient thought and insightall the while peacefully puffing his pipe. The added psychological dimension enriches the reader's normal interest in learning the solution to the mystery. Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century. He was able to write 60 to 80 pages a day. He travelled widely and stayed in the United States for ten years, from 1945 until 1955. In 1957, he moved to Switzerland. During his lifetime, he published about 450 novels and short stories. He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series
