Georges (Joseph Christian) Simenon (1903-1989) Belgian-born French novelist, one of the most skilled and literate writers of detective fiction. Simenon is best known as the creator of Paris police detective Inspector Maigret. He turned out 84 Maigret mysteries and 136 other novels, but he never wrote the 'big' novel that many critics demanded of him. Over 500 million copies of Simenon's books have been printed and translated into 50 languages. "'Truth never seems true. I don't mean only in literature or in painting. I won't remind you either of those Doric columns whose lines seem to us strictly perpendicular and which only give that impression because they are slightly curved. If they were straight, they'd look as if they were swelling, don't you see?'" (from Maigret's Memoirs . This experience provided the young Simenon with the perfect apprenticeship. At the age of seventeen he published his first novel. He joined a group of painters, writers, and dilettantes who called themselves La Caque In 1922 Simenon went to Paris, publishing short stories and popular novels under almost two dozen different pen names. He worked as an office clerk for a right-wing writer, and was a secretary to a wealthy aristocrat, the Marquis de Tracy. Simenon lived in France from 1923 to 1939, during which time his writing turned into an industry of novels. Between 1923 and 1933 Simenon produced more than 200 books of pulp fiction under several pseudonyms. From 1931 to 1934 Simenon wrote 19 Maigret novels. After a pause of 8 years, Maigret returned again in 1942 with three new stories.

Georges Simenon was born at 26 rue L©opold (now number 24) in Li¨ge to D©sir© Simenon and his wife Henriette. D©sir© Simenon worked in an accounting office at an insurance company and had married Henriette in April . Although Georges Simenon was born on February 13 superstition resulted in his birth being registered as having been on the 12th. This story of his birth is recounted at the beginning of his novel Pedigree. The Simenon family traces its origins back to the Limburg region, his mother's family being from Dutch Limburg. One of her more notorious ancestors was Gabriel Br¼hl, a criminal who preyed on Limbourg from the 1720s until he was hanged, in 1743. Later, Simenon would use Br¼ll as one of his many pen names.

Georges Simenon
Eminent writer
Georges Simenon (Liège 1903-Lausanne 1989), eminent writer of the 20th century, is certainly one of the most Famous Belgians in the world. After going into journalism by joining the Gazette de Liège, Georges Simenon decides to take up the pen and publishes, in Paris, a series of popular novels using different pseudonyms. He would go on to give an impressive literary output, translated into numerous languages and very often adapted For television or the cinema.
Inspector Maigret
His name is soon linked to the detective novel and to a particular person, Inspector Maigret. He succeeds in reviving the genre with his sense of psychological analysis and by the portrayal of the atmosphere of a city or of a social milieu. However, to reduce Simenon's work to Maigret would be to Forget the biggest part of his ceuvre, that is, the - more ambitious - short stories and psychological novels, Three beds in Manhattan (Trois chambres à Manhattan), The Cat (Le Chat), Les Pitard, etc. The best of his books paint a panorama of his time like Balzac and Zola in their day. His sober depiction of everyday reality, even in situations of conflict, was probably the secret of his success.

Hardy possesed the inherent ability to express the sentiments of Victorian rural society through his carefully constructed stories. Often caught in a struggle against their passions and circumstances, his characters were an expression of his own repulsion of the injustice and hypocrisy that was rife at the time.
The Mayor of Casterbridge Thomas Hardy In a fit of drunken anger, Michael Henchard sells his wife and baby daughter for five guineas at a country fair. Over the course of the following years, he manages to establish himself as a respected and prosperous pillar of the community of Casterbridge, but behind his success there always lurk the shameful secret of his past and a personality prone to self-destructive pride and temper. Subtitled 'A Story of a Man of Character', Hardy's powerful and sympathetic study of the heroic but deeply flawed Henchard is also an intensely dramatic work, tragically played out against the vivid backdrop of a close-knit Dorsetshire town.
Far from the Madding Crowd Thomas Hardy Independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene has come to Weatherbury to take up her position as a farmer on the largest estate in the area. Her bold presence draws three very different suitors: the gentleman-farmer Boldwood, soldier-seducer Sergeant Troy and the devoted shepherd Gabriel Oak. Each, in contrasting ways, unsettles her decisions and complicates her life, and tragedy ensues, threatening the stability of the whole community. The first of his works set in Wessex, Hardy's novel of swiftpassion and slow courtship is imbued with his evocative descriptions of rural life and landscapes, and with unflinching honesty about sexual relationships.
