The Collected Stories of Robert Silverberg, Volume One: To Be Continued
by Robert Silverberg
reviewed by Paul Kincaid
There are several volumes already extant that purport to be part of the Collected Stories of Robert Silverberg . There were problems with those earlier efforts, such as the fact that they tended to start in mid-career and ignored such pedantic issues as chronology. But their biggest problem was that none of them ever came close to completion, so Silverberg is starting again at the beginning. This, we are led to believe, is the definitive "Collected Stories." Except, of course, it isn't.
Phases of the Moon
by Robert Silverberg
reviewed by Jayme Lynn Blaschke
It reads not so much like a single author collection, but rather an anthology giving a historical overview of the evolution of the genre spanning six decades. Every story here could have a different author's name on it. The ease at which he shifts perspective and approach, changes the very rhythm of his sentences, the selection of words is nothing short of amazing. Each story reads as if it sprang from a different mind, flowed from unrelated fingers onto pages separated by not only miles, but lifetimes.

      Interview: Robert Silverberg
      By David Horwich
11 December 2000 R obert Silverberg is one of the notable figures in the history of science fiction. He has published an astonishing array of outstanding work in his long and productive career and won numerous awards, including 5 Nebulas and 4 Hugos . He has also edited numerous story anthologies, and served as the president of SFWA for a time. During his most prolific period, from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, he published over twenty (20!) novels and many short stories. The novels of this era tend to be short, intense, tightly written works. Some of my favorites include A Time of Changes, Tower of Glass, Nightwings, and The World Inside, but this is hardly an exhaustive list. Pretty much everything from this period is well worth reading, although most of it is out of print. After some time off in the late 70s (see here for a more extensive biographical sketch), Silverberg has continued to write and win awards; the best known of his more recent work is probably the multi-volume Majipoor series. Mr. Silverberg currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, author Karen Haber. Before starting on his newest project, he took the time to answer these questions by email: David Horwich: You've had an impressively prolific career as a writer. How do you maintain a high level of creativity and productivity? Do you have particularly disciplined working habits?

    Legends
    edited by Robert Silverberg
Review by This hefty anthology of eleven previously unpublished novellas set in the most popular worlds of the most famous contemporary writers of fantasy fiction is in many ways the commercial validation of a brand of fiction that has in the last thirty years grown from a neglected genre into a bestselling phenomenon. Its selection of authorsespecially in view of their collective and individual impact on the fielddefines the genre and how it is perceived. In the introduction to Legends , editor Robert Silverberg likens fantasy fiction to the great epic poems of antiquity Gilgamesh The Odyssey , etc.and speculates that a timeless tradition of fantasy storytelling stretches back to the time of our cave-dwelling ancestors and finds its modern avatar in bestselling fantasy series. While it's true that fantasy fiction has mined antiquity for its raw materialsSilverberg's own 1984 novel Gilgamesh the King being a great example of how effective this source material can be to create powerful and pertinent contemporary works of artit's anachronistic and ethnocentric to presume that these ancient texts fulfilled the same function as fantasy does today, that their composers had the same motivations as authors of fantasy novels or, especially, that ancient peoples experienced these texts as fantasy. Great gulfs of time, culture, and consciousness separate 20th-century Western fantasy from these ancient texts. And while these ancient texts have over time infiltrated our consciousness to attain the mythic resonance of legends, it is presumptuous and pretentious to bestow such a status on the literary creations of contemporary fantasistsregardless of their quality.

    Robert Silverberg
Robert Silverberg is one of the most highly-decorated authors in science fiction. Winner of five Nebula Awards and four Hugos, the former president of the Science Fiction Writers of America has been entertaining readers with perfectly visualized worlds for over 40 years. After a hiatus of 13 years, Silverberg returns to Majipoor the setting for his most beloved and bestselling works, The Majipoor Trilogy ( Lord Valentine's Castle, Majipoor Chronicles, and Valentine Pontifex Sorcerers of Majipoor , a prequel, takes place 1000 years before the Trilogy, as civil war divides the giant planet. The excerpt below is taken from Chapter Three of the book, where Korsibar, son of the soon-to-be-Pontifex, is given a troubling message by his personal soothsayer. We are indebted to HarperPrism for permission to use this excerpt. Additional information about the book and author can be found at the end of this file.

    Chapter Three
The chambers where the Coronal had his lodgings at those times when it was necessary for him to visit the capital city of the Pontificate were located on the deepest level of the Labyrinth's imperial sector, halfway around the perimeter of the city from the secluded bedroom where Pontifex Prankipin lay dying. As Prince Korsibar advanced along the winding corridor leading to his father's rooms, a tall, angular figure stepped smoothly from the shadows to his left and said, "If you would, prince, a moment's word."
