    Silverberg was born in Brooklyn New York A voracious reader since childhood, he began submitting stories to science fiction magazines in his early teenage years. He attended Columbia University , receiving an A.B. in English Literature in 1956, but kept writing science fiction. His first published novel , a children's book called Revolt on Alpha C , appeared in 1955, and in the following year, he won his first Hugo , as "best new writer". For the next four years, by his own count, he wrote a million words a year, for magazines and Ace Doubles . In 1959 the market for science fiction collapsed, and Silverberg turned his ability to write copiously to other fields, from carefully researched historical nonfiction to softcore pornography for Nightstand Books In the mid-1960s, science fiction writers were starting to be more literarily ambitious.

With the exception of Isaac Asimov , he is perhaps the most prolific author ever to be associated with the SF genre. He has published upwards of one hundred novels, along with countless short stories, and edited numerous reprint and original anthologies, as well as contributing over seventy non-fiction books devoted to wide-ranging interests. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction lists no fewer than twenty-four pseudonyms he has used either for solo work or collaborative efforts, most of them used early in his career from the mid-50s to the early '60s. Affectionately known as Silverbob to both his friends and fans alike, he began writing (or at least selling) during his college years at Columbia University. His first short story appeared in 1954 (The SF Encyclopedia says it was "Gorgon Planet," but the above referenced website lists it as "The Silent Colony"). His first novel came the following year (both sources identify it as Revolt on Alpha C ). 1956 was his break-out year, as he was awarded a Hugo as Most Promising New Author at that year's Worldcon. He began to produce work in an almost assembly-line like pace, which is what prompted the use of so many pseudonyms. Perhaps what is most amazing is that even his earliest work was quite polished, exhibiting few of the derivative faults of most newcomers to the genre. True, many of his plots and themes were easily recognizable, but his literary stylings, along with his encyclopedic knowledge of history, sociology, and psychology, cast these themes in a new perspective. It is possible to argue that Silverberg is one of the most intelligent and well-rounded individuals in SF.

In 1959, Robert Silverberg announced that he was retiring from science fiction. In spite of this retirement, books and stories continued to appear, mostly anthologies of collected stories written during the earlier days and expansions of previous short works into novels. However, after much pleading from editors and fans, he held out until 1978, when he found himself working on what became The Alien Years;

Liked the essay. For me, living in a small town, there were no used book/magazine stores when I was a young lad. I'm about a decade behind Silverberg. I came by passion through libraries. My first exposure to SF was Tunnel In The Sky at my school. I did haunt both the school and public libraries after that, reading everything by that Heinlein guy I could find, as well as Verne, Wells, and Holly. Magazines weren't discovered until I could earn my own money and get out in the world. 3:07 PM

I was a small-towner, too, but I can sure identify with the feelings. We had The Corner Bookstore, a marvel in a town with around 6000 people. No used books, but I haunted the spinner racks and the magazine racks. 3:18 PM

Robert Silverberg is a writer for whom I have always had immense respect. It was with great relief that I saw, following a return to his best SF form with Hot Sky at Midnight, him continue in the science fiction mode with his latest offering, Starborne. According to the Los Angeles Times, quoted on the cover, Robert Silverberg is 'A master of his craft and imagination'. I have no argument with this sentiment, nor do I believe that the statement is open to argument. It is plain truth. Unfortunately it is on the cover of the wrong book.
Starborne shows him to be a master craftsman, as he has proved over and over again down the years. But imagination is not something of which this novel could be accused. All the way through the book I had the nagging feeling that I had read parts of this somewhere before. I checked the front of the book, where the credits and legalities are taken care of, to see if maybe it hadn't been expanded from a short story, or possibly even a reissue of an old novel - one that I had read in the seventies. But there was no statement to that effect. So I completed my reading, ignoring that nagging doubt.

A note from Robert Silverberg: I've asked Jon Davis to designate this site as the Quasi-Official Robert Silverberg Site , a term of my own devising. What I mean by it is that this is as close to an official site as I'm ever going to have, because I lack the technical skills to build a site of my own, as well as the time and, I suppose, the energy. And also my temperament is not inclined toward more self-promotion than is absolutely necessary for my professional well-being, and setting up a web site for oneself strikes me as a rather emphatic act of self-promotion. On the other hand, the site as Jon has constructed it contains everything that a proper author site should have, and nothing that it shouldn't. I was immensely pleased to discover it in my on-line wanderings and I continue to enjoy visiting it (as well as to make use of its bibliographical material for my own reference!). quasi-official Nevertheless, quasi-official though it may be, this is still Jon's Silverberg site, not Robert Silverberg's, and to him should go all applause for its comprehensiveness and elegance of design, as well as all responsibility for anything that I would just as soon not take responsibility for myself.

The Man Who Never Forgot
by Robert Silverberg

He saw the girl waiting in line outside a big Los Angeles movie house, on a mildly foggy Tuesday morning. She was slim and pale, barely five-three, with stringy flaxen hair, and she was alone. He remembered her, of course.
He knew it would be a mistake, but he crossed the street anyway and walked up along the theater line to where she stood.
"Hello," he said. "Tom Niles," he said. "Pasadena, New Year's Day, 1955. You sat next to me. Ohio State-20, Southern Cal-7. You don't remember?" And he strode rapidly away. He had not gone more than ten feet when he heard the little surprised gasp and the "But I

Executive summary: Nightwings Science fiction and fantasy author Robert Silverberg is known for such novels as Dying Inside Son of Man , and Lord Valentine's Castle . His short fiction includes "Nightwings" (later an award winning novel), "A Time of Changes", "Good News from the Vatican", and "Born with the Dead". In his 40 years as author Silverberg has won five Nebula Awards and four Hugos and is a past president of the Science Fiction Writers of America. Asimov once said of him, "Where Silverberg goes today, the rest of science fiction will go tomorrow!" Silverberg became an avid science fiction reader as a child. As a teen he dreamed of seeing his own work published in the pulp science fiction magazines he so loved. In 1949, at age fourteen, he began his own fanzine, and by 1953 he had sold his first professional story. A couple of years later, in 1955, while enrolled at Columbia University, he moved into an apartment building that just happened to house science fiction authors Harlan Ellison and Randall Garrett. Garrett eventually introduced Silverberg to a number of prominent editors and even collaborated with him on several projects (often under the name "Robert Randall") including the novelettes "The Chosen People", "False Prophet", and "The Shrouded Planet".
