Sir Philip Sidney
Sir Philip Sidney is buried St Paul's Cathedral, London. Also buried here is John Donne (See map...ref. no 5) In 1586 Sidney took part in a skirmish against the Spanish at Zutphen in the Netherlands and received a musket wound that shattered his thighbone. 22 days later he died from the wound. It is reported that on his death bed he refused a cup of water - even though he had a burning thirst - sending it instead to a dying soldier who lay near by, saying: "Thy necessity is yet greater than mine." He was honoured with a state funeral. Sidney adapted the Petrarchan sonnet and used it in Astrophel and Stella to write t he first ever sonnet sequence in English.

SIR PHILIP SIDNEY (1554-1586), English poet, statesman and soldier, eldest son of Sir Henry Sidney and his wife Mary Dudley , was born at Penshurst on the 30th of November 1554. His father, Sir Henry Sidney (1529-1586), was three times lord deputy of Ireland , and in 1560 became lord president of Wales Philip Sidney's childhood was spent at Penshurst; and before he had completed his tenth year he was nominated by his father lay rector of Whitford, Flintshire. A deputy was appointed, and Philip enjoyed the revenue of the benefice for the rest of his life. On the 17th of October 1564 he was entered at Shrewsbury school, not far from his father's official residence at Ludlow Castle , on the same day with his life-long friend and first biographer, Fulke Greville. An affectionate letter of advice from his father and mother, written about 1565, was preserved and printed in 1591 ( A Very Godly Letter. ..). In 1568 Sidney was sent to Christ Church, Oxford , where he formed lasting friendships with Richard Hakluyt and William Camden . But his chief companion was Fulke Greville, who had gone to Broadgates Hall (Pembroke College). Sir Henry Sidney was already anxious to arrange an advantageous marriage for his son, who was at that time heir to his uncle, the earl of

    Sir Philip Sidney
English poet, courtier, patron of poets and scholars. One of the great literary figures of Elizabethan England, his heroic prose romance, the Arcadia (1580, revised 1584) was the most important work of prose fiction in sixteenth-century England. He wrote the first great Elizabethan sonnet cycles, Astrophil and Stella (1582), a sequence of one hundred and eight sonnets and eleven songs which explore the mind of the lover. His Defense of Poesie (1589) was the finest work of Elizabethan literary criticism. His successful experiments and technique influenced many other Renaissance poets like Spenser, Campion, Drayton and Jonson.

Loving in truth, and fain in verse my love to show That she (dear She) might take some pleasure of my pain: Pleasure might cause her read, reading might make her know, Knowledge might pity win, and pity grace obtain; I sought fit words to paint the blackest face of woe, Studying inventions fine, her wits to entertain: Oft turning others’ leaves, to see if thence would flow Some fresh and fruitful showers upon my sun-burn’d brain. But words came halting forth, wanting Invention’s stay, Invention, Nature’s child, fled step-dame Study’s blows, And others’ feet still seem’d but strangers in my way. Courtesy
A dull head thinks of no better way to show himself wise, than by suspecting everything in his way. Suspicion A fair woman shall not only command without authority, but persuade without speaking. Power A just cause and a zealous defender make an imperious resolution cut off the tediousness of cautious discussions. Zeal A noble cause doth ease much a grievous case. Cause A noble heart, like the sun, showeth its greatest countenance in its lowest estate. Adversity Confidence Countenance A popular license is indeed the many-headed tyrant. License A tale which holdeth children from play and old men from the chimney-corner. Tales A true knight is fuller of gay bravery in the midst than in the beginning of danger.

Structure, theme and convention in Sir Philip Sidney's sonnet sequence Astrophil and Stella
By Donna The names Astrophil and Stella mean Star-lover and Star, suggesting the impossibility of their union because of the distance between them The sixteenth century was a time of scientific, historical, archaeological, religious and artistic exploration. More attention was being allotted to probing into the depths of the human psyche and it was up to the artists and poets rather than the priests and scholars to examine and mirror these internal landscapes. The 'little world of man' [1] was reflected through various artistic forms, one of which was the sonnet, which was conventionally used for dedications, moral epigrams and the like. Traditionally most sonnets dealt with the theme of romantic love and in general the sonneteer dealt with the over-riding concern of the self and the other, the latter of which normally referred to a mistress, friend, or a familial relation. One of the first important artistic creations witnessed by the Elizabethans was Sidney's sonnet sequence called Astrophil and Stella , a variation on Petrarch's Canzoniere . Sidney who was indeed acclaimed the 'English Petrarch', nevertheless wrote with his Elizabethan readers in mind as his characters spoke in English accents, voiced English concerns and evoked the spirit of the time.
