He raced incognito under the name of "Mr. N. S. Norway", but was better known by the name initialled "N.S." - Nevil Shute. Nevil Shute Norway at Phillip Island, April 1957
Photo: Peter D'Abbs - Autopics.com.au Nevil Shute Norway chose to write under a shortened version of his name. He was of the opinion that Vickers, his employer at the time, "would probably take a poor view of an employee who wrote novels on the side". His wide experience with aircraft included working as the "Chief Calculator" for the R100, one of two competing airship projects in Britain in the late 1920s. In today's computer age, it is hard to imagine a time when teams of people were employed to perform complex calculations! The R100 was built by a private enterprise team, competing with the government R101 team. This program ended with the crash of the R101 in October 1930, with the loss of 48 of the 54 on board. The R100 team was headed up by Barnes Wallis, later the designer of the "Dambuster" bombs. Perhaps less well known is the fact that much later Wallis was also the designer of the Parkes radio telescope in NSW; still one of the world's leading astronomical observatories.

NEVIL SHUTE
welcome to Big Bill's Nevil Shute Stuff! He wrote "On the Beach" and "A Town Like Alice" don't you know! Buy Nevil Shute Books Through My Amazon Links! U.S.A. U.K. AIRCRAFT A somewhat abashed Nevil Shute sought out a university friend at A.P. Watt, the respected literary agent. They were acting at the time for Conan Doyle, Kipling and Edgar Wallace and it was they who persuaded Cassell to reconsider and publish the novel. Nevil Shute's adoption of his pseudonym also dates from the publication of "Marazan". At the time he was enjoying a fairly important job with Vickers, the aircraft company, and he judged that they might take exception to one of their employees indulging in fanciful novel-writing. So he adopted a nom-de-plume by simply omitting his true surname, Norway. At the beginning, Nevil Shute embarked on an aeronautical career as a calculator with the de Haviland Aircraft Co. Ltd. The itch to write was already upon him: perhaps Italy stimulated the poetical side of his writing ability, for he toyed with poetry for a while, but he found it too demanding. REWARD His ability to write novels continued undiminished despite his wartime duties, and increasingly he gained a following of admirers who read each new book avidly. He began to enjoy the reputation of being a storyteller of some worth. His books were not long or complex, their storylines were easy to absorb, but they made compulsive reading, as is shown in the sheer number of reprints published through the years.

Life Summary Resources Abbreviations NORWAY, NEVIL SHUTE (1899-1960), writer and aeronautical engineer, was born on 17 January 1899 at Ealing, London, second child of Arthur Hamilton Norway, a clerk in the General Post Office, and his wife Mary Louisa, n©e Gadsden. In 1912 Arthur became secretary of the Post Office in Ireland. Father and son had first-hand experience of the siege of its Dublin headquarters at Easter 1916. Educated in England at Lynam's (the Dragon) School, Oxford, and Shrewsbury School, Shropshire, Nevil suffered from a stammer which, though it lessened, was still noticeable late in life. It prevented him from being commissioned in the British Army in mid-1918 when he completed training at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He served (from August) in England as a private in the 1st Reserve Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, then entered Balliol College, Oxford (B.A., 1923), where he read engineering. Slide Rule , of the six-year trials and tribulations of the competitive construction of the airships R100 and R101 (built by the government), and the subsequent disastrous crash of R101 in France on its maiden flight to India, revealed his narrative gifts and some of his major preoccupations as a writer—the hubris of governments, bureaucratic paralysis, and the betrayal of individual common sense by large organizations.

Death did not oblige 60-year-old Nevil Shute last week, for it came prosaically in a Melbourne hospital bed, after a stroke. It was an ending the hero of any of Shute's 21 novels would have understood, for each of them faced up dutifully to the enormity of life's commonplaces.

Though he was acclaimed as the top bestseller of all contemporary British authors, and his annual royalties topped the $175,000 mark, Shute insisted that he wrote novels "for fun." Aviation was his ruling passion, and he pursued it as a flyer, aeronautical engineer, and founder of his own manufacturing firm, Airspeed Ltd. Out of his craft and his passion, Shute fashioned an exciting double life. A Hook for Soloists. Born Nevil Shute Norway in the London suburb of Baling on Jan. 17, 1899, the future novelist was the second son of a postal official who turned vacations on the Continent into competent travel books. Like another famed storyteller, Somerset Maugham, the boy suffered from an agonizing stammer. Sensitive Nevil played hooky, haunting the London Science Museum with its glass-encased models of the pioneering planes of Blériot and the Wright brothers. At the end of World War I, he entered Oxford as an engineering major. Young Norway was an indifferent student but a line engineer; in 1923 the fledgling aircraft firm of de Havilland signed him on as a junior designer at £5 a week. The same year he soloed. At the Stag Lane Aerodrome, a crash wagon stood by with an 18-ft. hook, to show the inexperienced pilot "that his friends had it ready to assist him in any difficulty that might arise." Pilot Norway did not crash, then or ever.

Books by Nevil Shute Shop used books at Biblio.com British-born Australian novelist, best known for the novel ON THE BEACH (1957), which was adapted for the screen in 1959. The film became one of the most celebrated anti-Bomb films of its era. Shute was educated as an aeronautical engineer and he employs his expertise on technical issues and knowledge of aviation in his books. In addition to On The Beach his novels PIED PIPER (1942) and A TOWN LIKE ALICE (1959) have also been made into major films. "A beautiful aircraft is the expression of the genius of a great engineer who is also a great artist. It is impossible for that man to carry out the whole of the design himself; he works through a design office staffed by a hundred draughtsmen or more. A hundred minds, each with their own less competent ideas, are striving to modify the chief designer's original conception. If the design is to appear in the end as a great artistic unity, the chief designer must be a man of immensely powerful will, capable of imposing his idea and his way of doing things on each of his hundred draughtsmen, so that each one of them is too terrified to insert any of his own ideas."
