Aeronautical engineer Nationality British born, Australian Genres Popular fiction Nevil Shute Norway 17 January 12 January ) was, as Nevil Shute , a popular novelist , as well as a successful aeronautical engineer. Many of Shute's works are adventure novels with an emphasis on technical aspects. No Highway (1948) dramatizes events surrounding a predicted imminent structural failure in an aircraft design. Several of his novels also have an element of the supernatural, notably Round the Bend (1951), which concerns a new religion developing around an aircraft mechanic. One of Shute's best-known books was among his last: On the Beach (1957), set in a world slowly dying from the effects of an atomic war . Its popularity is owed in part to its adaptation as a film, which Shute despised because of the liberties taken with his characters.

Biographical note on Nevil Shute
Nevil Shute Norway was born 17th January 1899 at Ealing, London, the youngest of two brothers and the son of a senior civil servant in the General Post Office. At an early stage it was obvious that his interests lay not in things academic as did his brother's but in things practical, having been caught playing truant from school only to spend his time studying the mechanical exhibits and early flying machines in the Science Museum in South Kensington. The family moved from London to Dublin in 1912 when his father was appointed Secretary to the Post Office in Ireland. Nevil Shute had attended various schools in England including Shrewsbury and it was whilst on holiday from there that he was in Dublin during the Easter uprising in 1916, and acted as a stretcher bearer. In June, 1915, his older brother Fred had died of wounds in Flanders during WW1. He was quite philosophic about his future at this stage having seen many of his seniors at school killed in the fighting in Flanders as well as his brother. His stammer, from which he was to suffer to some extent throughout his life, probably saved him from this fate as it prevented his earlier attempts to obtain a commision in the army and then the new Royal Air Force. After enlisting in the ranks of the Suffolk Regiment he was posted to the Isle of Grain in the Thames Estuary for the last three months of the war.

Nevil Shute (1899-1960) - original name Nevil Shute Norway British-born Australian novelist, an accomplished storyteller, whose best-known work, ON THE BEACH (1957), was adapted for the screen in 1959. The picture became one of the most celebrated anti-Bomb films, and attracted much attention in Moscow because it was the first full-length American feature to have a premiere in the Soviet Union. Shute was educated as an aeronautical engineer and he used his expertise on technical issues and knowledge of aviation in his books. His novels PIED PIPER (1942) and A TOWN LIKE ALICE (1959) have also been made into major films. "A beautiful aircraft is the expression of the genius of a great engineer who is also a great artist. It is impossible for that man to carry out the whole of the design himself; he works through a design office staffed by a hundred draughtsmen or more. A hundred minds, each with their own less competent ideas, are striving to modify the chief designer's original conception. If the design is to appear in the end as a great artistic unity, the chief designer must be a man of immensely powerful will, capable of imposing his idea and his way of doing things on each of his hundred draughtsmen, so that each one of them is too terrified to insert any of his own ideas." (from No Highway Nevil Shute was born in Ealing, Middlesex. His father was Arthur Hamilton Norway, C.B., an assistant secretary of the General Post Office in London, and his mother was the former Mary Louisa Gadsden. Shute was educated at schools in Oxford, Shrewsbury, and Woolwich. After witnessing the Easter Rising in Dublin, where he was a volunteer stretcher-bearer, Shute entered Balliol College, Oxford. He spent the later stages of World War I in military service and then continued his studies in Oxford, graduating in 1922.

(Neville Shute Norway) Search Authors Search Books About Nevil Shute Nevil Shute Norway was born in London and worked as an aeronautical engineer at Vickers before setting up his own airship company. Worried that his reputation as a fiction writer would damage his engineering career, he wrote without using his surname. He served in both world wars and was a commander in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in World War II, working on secret projects. After the war he became a full time author completing a fictionalised account of his war time experience in 'Most Secret'. Moving to Australia in 1949 he based seven of his novels against that background including his most successful title On The Beach. This was subsequently a hugely successful film starring Gregory Peck, Antony Perkins and Ava Gardner and became arguably the major after the bomb movie of all time. Shute became one of the top selling authors of the 50s and 60s with wide appeal to a broad international market attracted by strong story lines which were always meticulously researched.

The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. D o you remember On The Beach ? It was a wrenching, understated story told through the eyes of the last survivors of nuclear war, waiting to die in Australia. Thirty years ago, the best-selling book, and a fine movie based on it, made a disturbingly realistic case against the nuclear stalemate. The author was Nevil Shute Norway, born in England in 1899. He wrote under the name Nevil Shute. After serving in WW-I, he trained at Oxford to be an aeronautical engineer. From 1922 to 1933 he worked in airplane and dirigible companies. He also published his first four novels, one of which was made into a movie. He published nothing more until 1938. During that time he formed an airplane manufacturing company called Airspeed, Ltd. When he left the company to join WW-II in 1939, he'd built it up to a thousand employees. He went back to his books in 1938 and wrote roughly one a year until he died in Australia in 1960.
