Roster Of Physician Writers We are surprised if the doctor, by stealing some hours from his daily avocations, attains even moderate eminence in the path of literature. Edward Berdoe The following list includes the names, life-dates, and nationalities of all the physician writers of whom I am aware, drawn from a variety of resources . To be included, an individual must be a physician (Doctor of Medicine or of Osteopathy in the United States, or similarly certified or accepted in countries other than the United States, or in previous eras), and must have published (not just self-published) at least one book (not just a chap book) of a "creative" nature - fiction, poetry, drama, essay. Pseudonyms are italicized , preceded or followed by real names. Each name is linked to a section of brief and informal biographical (emphasizing medical training and work) and bibliographical (including reference to background sources as well as selected works) information, but no literary criticism. The total number of authors included is of course but a fraction of all physician writers, and, in addition to encouraging interest in this neglected aspect of the literature and medicine, or medical humanities, field, one reason for publishing this list is to invite suggestions for additions to it.

    Wednesday's Child
    Deborah Shlian and Joel Shlian
This review is by Joan Hartwood's children knew a secret. A bad, bad secret... It was Leigh Novak's second chance. Leigh's first patient, a child, died mysteriously in her office. And soon Leigh was too busy to spend much time with Jeremy. It seemed her only friend was Nora - the woman who took such good care of the town's little children. When Nora started taking care of Jeremy, he stopped getting angry, stopped crying, stopped telling lies... Nora taught her children to be very, very good. If they were bad, she punished them. And if a child was very bad, Nora made sure he would never cry again..." Riveting! You won't be able to put this one down, I guarantee it! Wednesday's Child is a roller coaster ride of the first order. Loved it. Believable characters you care about. Suspense that builds and when you're already on the edge of your seat, the authors turn the heat up. A bang-up ending. A medical thriller that is a sort of Robin Cook and Mary Higgins Clark blend. Not a lagging paragraph in the entire book. You won't want to miss this exciting thriller.

    30. THE MYSTERY READER Reviews: Shou By Deborah & Joel Shlian
The Mystery Reader – the latest reviews and news of current mystery novels.
    http://www.themysteryreader.com/shlian-shou.html
Shou (toExcel, $17.95, NV) ISBN1-58348-759X Shou is a traditional Chinese symbol of longevity. This medical mystery, love story, philosophical history and international thriller spans the time in China from a brief prologue set in 1949, to the five month period before the massacre at Tiananmen Square. In 1949, Dr. Ni-Fu Cheng was apolitical. As Chiang Kai-chek began to lose ground to the People's Liberation Army, the widower Cheng was savvy enough to make arrangements to evacuate his daughter, Su Wei, to his sister's home in America. Because of his medical research on longevity or shou, he was unwilling to leave China. Secure in the importance of his research, he is able to ignore the political changes of Communism. The novel fast-forwards to January of 1989. The Chinese Army has been stripped of a million men, capitalism is creeping in, and the basic tenet of Mao's philosophy…that "political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" seems to be forgotten. The Chinese government realizes that Cheng has made the earth-shattering discovery regarding the prolonging of life; but he will not reveal his formula. Corrupt politicians devise a plan to extract the secret from Cheng. Knowing that his daughter, who had escaped to the U.S., has terminal cancer, they now hope to lure Dr. Lili Quan, Cheng’s granddaughter, back to China. Meanwhile, a failing drug company with connections to the CIA, plots to steal Cheng’s secret. Others also know about Cheng’s breakthrough and want to learn the secret of shou.

Dr. Leigh Novak decides to take her son Jeremy away from Los Angeles and to a small town in Northern California called Hartwood, population 3000. The day they arrived should have been happy, but instead went from bad to worse. Leigh finds old Doc Ellsford slumped over in his chair, half dead from a stroke. Once Leigh sees Doc off in the town’s only ambulance, Gabe Barker comes rushing in with his 3 year old son Brian who has a very high fever and is in a coma. Brian stops breathing shortly after they arrive. Leigh works on Brian for thirty minutes without any results, Little Brian is dead, and he should not be gone he only had the chicken pox. Along the way, Leigh finds friendship in Nora, a well respected childcare giver. WEDNESDAY’S CHILD gives a disturbing description of child abuse, but this is not just a book about child abuse, it’s a story about small town life and its secrets. The Shlians have written a fast paced, taut and very compelling story, I found the book spellbinding and hard to put down. If you like Mary Higgins Clark you will love WEDNESDAY’S CHILD.
