GENJI MONOGATARI is the title of a novel that was written about 1,000 years ago by a woman called Murasaki Shikibu. It has since been widely studied and translated into English. Professor Edward Seidensticker's translation of THE TALE OF GENJI was published in 1976. A STRING OF FLOWERS, UNTIED is a reworking of the poems based on the story in this translation. However the translators used Akiko Yosano's modern Japanese translation of the poems in the novel. The purpose was to rewrite the tanka (in English) in a more original format using the modern translation. It is effectively an English translation of Akiko Yosano's Japanese working of the original poems. As stated in the preface, these poems were translated into a 5 line format previously (by Professor Helen Graig McCullough). However, there are widely differing views about the right ways and wrong ways of writing tanka in English. This is because of the vast difference in the way in which the two languages are constructed. The 5-7-5-7-7 syllable count has largely been abandoned by British poets. Furthermore, cultural differences, which give secondary meaning, also lead to contextual difficulties in translations. Added to this there is the 1,000 year gap! It does state on the back cover that it is based on the first 33 Chapters and that this is not a translation of the complete work. There are also the additional poems by Akiko Yosano.

Murasaki Shikibu (978?

Murasaki Shikibu , born in 978, was a member of Japan's Fujiwara clan, which ruled behind the scenes during the Heian Period by providing the brides and courtesans of all the emperors. Lady Murasaki's rare literary talent, particularly her skill as a poet, secured her a place in the court of Empress Akiko. After the death of her husband, she cloistered herself to study Buddhism, raise her daughter, and write the world's first novel Genji Monogatari , the tale of the shining Prince Genji. • Murasaki Shikibu's epic-length novel, The Tale of Genji , probes the psychological, romantic and political workings of mid-Heian Japan. The novel earned Murasaki Shikibu notoriety even in the early 11th century, some six hundred years before the printing press made it available to the masses. Court society, which served as the subject of the novel, sought out chapters. Ladies-in-waiting and courtiers even pilfered unrevised copies, according to legend. Some thousand years later, Murasaki Shikibu and her novel continue to delight an enthusiastic audience. Stamps, scrolls, comic books, museums, shower gel, movies, parades, puppet plays, CD-ROMS: Murasaki Shikibu and her creation Genji have achieved National Treasure status in Japan and admiration all over the world. The tale spreads across four generations, splashed with poetry and romance and heightened awareness to the fleeting quality of life. Murasaki Shikibu's tale of love, sex, and politics explores a complex web of human and spiritual relationships. This focus on characters and their emotional experience, as compared to plot, makes the novel easily accessible to the modern reader. It explains, in part, why many scholars consider

Murasaki Shikibu is one of the greatest Japanese writers, and a court figure at the height of the Heian period (795–1185). Her novel, Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji) is considered to be one of the world's finest and earliest novels. Her real name is unknown, and it is thought she was called Murasaki after the heroine in her novel. The Tale of Genji concerns the life of Prince Genji and his descendants. He is a complex personality and a peerless lover. The novel portrays the women in his elegant court life. These women are individually described, with their talents in the arts of music, drawing, calligraphy

One can conclude little or nothing about the status of women in early Japan from the haniwa figurines from the tumuli period. The only distinguishing feature between most figurines labelled as male and those labelled as female are that the male figurines represent some economic function while the "female" figurines are more abstract. These are more likely modern impositions; figurines representing hunters or othe economic functions could very well be female figurines, though we naturally assume, from our own modern perspective, that they're male.
tumuli (this is Latin, in Japanese, they're called kofun ). The best picture we have of early Japanese life is afforded by the small clay figurines, called haniwa that were deposited in these tumuli. Their nature or purpose is unknown. Are they magic? Departing gifts? Needless to say, they provide a valuable picture of early Japanese life, particularly the haniwa of houses. The figurines also represent men and women, and the earliest haniwa do not make a clear distinction between men and women. However, as

Kyoto University of Foreign Studies' Database of 530 Titles

To celebrate next year's millennium anniversary of "The Tale of Genji," the library at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, has built a database of its collection of some 530 books relating to the story and to "Murasaki Shikibu Nikki," or the diary of the author of "The Tale of Genji." The collection is one part of the documented studies about the story and the diary that are published in many countries around the world. The database includes eight translations of "The Tale of Genji" in addition to the original Japanese, and the library hopes to "offer many people an opening to experience world-class Japanese cultural-heritage items." Disseminating Japanese cultural heritage to the world in nine languages The library has collected books concerning "The Tale of Genji" and Murasaki Shikibu Nikki since around 1967, and it now owns translated versions in English, French, German, Russian, Chinese, Italian, Spanish and Swedish, as well as the original Japanese. Some of the books are accompanied by beautiful illustrations depicting daily Court life, so people in different countries can sense Japanese culture and customs dating from about 1000 years ago. Operation of the database service has been underway since November 1. It is accessible to anyone through an Internet search by language or translator. Books can be read or checked out after registration at the library, and is also open to people who are not students at the university. The library staff stated, "We plan to collect some books written in a few other languages, and hope that many more people will be able to avail themselves of this service."

Murasaki Shikibu Genji Karuta The Tale of Genji is thought to be the world’s oldest novel. It was written by Murasaki Shikibu, a woman from the Heian period (11th century Japan), and chronicles the life and romances of Prince Genji. This series - Murasaki Shikibu Genji Karuta - is considered to be the best works by Kunisada 2. The series was designed and printed around 1857. Apparently the publisher Tsutaya Kichizo used the highest quality papers and inks for this special Genji series. Each print is identified by the “Genji mon” and title that are located in a unique cartouche in the shape of an opened clamshell.
