The Tale of Genji
This site aims to promote a wider understanding and appreciation of The Tale of Genji - the 11th Century Japanese classic written by a Heian court lady known as Murasaki Shikibu. It also serves as a kind of travel guide to the world of Genji. Iwashimizu Hachiman-gu Shrine, tutelary shrine of the Minamoto (Genji) clan.
Written 1,000 years ago, The Tale of Genji has 54 chapters and over 1,000 pages of text in its English translation. It is generally considered to be the world's first true novel, and was certainly the first psychological novel ever written. If you are planning a trip to Japan, visiting some of the places featured in Genji Monogatari is a good way to start. These pages contain photographs of many of those places, and others mentioned in other literature of the time.

Scene from Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji The Granger Collection, New York court lady who was the author of the Genji monogatari The Tale of Genji ), generally considered the greatest work of Japanese literature and thought to be the world's oldest full novel. Her real name is unknown; it is conjectured that she acquired the sobriquet of Murasaki from the name of the heroine of her novel. The main source of knowledge about her life is the diary she kept between 1007 and 1010. This work possesses considerable interest for the delightful glimpses it affords of life at the court of the empress Joto mon'in, whom Murasaki Shikibu served. Some critics believe that she wrote the entire Tale of Genji between 1001 (the year her husband, Fujiwara Nobutaka, died) and 1005, when she began serving at court. More probably, however, the composition of this extremely long and complex novel extended over a much greater period and was not finished until about 1010. The Tale of Genji captures the image of a unique society of ultrarefined and elegant aristocrats, whose indispensable accomplishments were skill in poetry, music, calligraphy, and courtship. Much of it is concerned with the loves of Prince Genji and the different women in his life, all of whom are exquisitely delineated. Although the novel does not contain scenes of powerful action, it is permeated with a sensitivity to human emotions and to the beauties of nature hardly paralleled elsewhere. The tone of the novel darkens as it progresses, indicating perhaps a deepening of Murasaki Shikibu's Buddhist conviction of the vanity of the world. Some, however, believe that its last 14 chapters were written by another author. The translation (1935) of

Murasaki Shikibu
Details about Murasaki Shikibu and her life are not really know. She lived in a time in Japan when the woman held a low position in society. Because of this, the exact date that she was born is not known. It is thought that she was born around 973 AD and that she died around 1025 AD. Her real name is not known either. During this time period only the emperor's wife's real name and birthdate were known. The Shikibu name comes from her father's position at court.
She was like the women in her book, a woman of the Heian period. The Tale of Genji is the first novel not only of Japanese literature, but of literature in general. It is considered to be one of the greatest and earliest novels in the world. It is known that Murasaki is the daughter of a governer of a province in the Fujiwara family.
Her father was also a well known scholar. Her father allowed her to study with her brother and even let her learn Chinese characters, which was improper for girls at that time.
She was married in her life for a short time and had one daughter. Both the death of her husband and her great talent brought her to court. It was at this time that she kept a diary which described court life. During these times she is thought to have written

Murasaki Shikibu is said to be the author of The Tale of Genji. Although the same can be said for all women of Murasaki's time, her real name and the date of birth and death cannot be confirmed even for her, the leading author of her day. The name of Murasaki Shikibu was that used for a court lady with "Murasaki" being used as a given name while "Shikibu" refers to her father's position at the court. Beside writing The Tale of Genji, Murasaki also showed her genius in her other famous book called The Diary of Murasaki Shikibu.
Murasaki Shikibu was born in a middle-level family of nobility during the middle of the Heian Period. Her father, Fujiwara Tametoki, was known as a scholar and man of literacy although he accomplished little of note as an official in the government. Perhaps in compensation for this, he took pains to see that his daughter was well learned. Murasaki Shikibu was remarkable when yet a child learning to read books that even educated boys found difficult.
Murasaki's childhood was not a happy one as her mother passing away soon after she was born followed by her elder sister on whom she depended. Murasaki married rather late into a family of similar social class. Within a few years, her husband died leaving Murasaki with a daughter and much grief and pain. It was against this background that Murasaki began writing The Tale of Genji in which she looks closely at the relationships of men and women and the unfortunate circumstances in which women find themselves placed in.

29. Murasaki Shikibu, The Tale Of Genji
A brief guide to characters and some terms from the great 11th century Japanese novel, The Tale of Genji by Lady murasaki shikibu.
http://uwp.edu/~canary/genjicha.htm
A Brief Genji Character List and Glossary
This list is designed to help readers keep track of the characters in The Tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki Shikibu in the English translations by Arthur Waley (1933), Edward G. Seidensticker (1976), and Royall Tyler (2001), especially the earlier, most often anthologized chapters. There are frequent differences, since the author follows the custom of her time in referring to individuals indirectly, by nicknames or titles, and translators have taken different approaches to the problems thus raised. Extensive intermarriage make it more difficult. Lady Murasaki herself says at the end of chapter 39: "The relationships between these people are all too complicated to explain" (Tyler translation), though she seems to have kept them all in her head herself. For another net list, see http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/~pmjs/resources/genji/genji-chart-names.html . For a summary of all 54 chapters, see http://www.taleofmurasaki.com/taleofgenjipage.htm . Her Writings The character of Genji may be based in part on the personality of Fujiwara Korechika (975-1010), a nephew of Fujiwara Michinaga (966-1027), a great statesman and distant relative of Lady Murasaki. Genji, as a result of his numerous love affairs, incurs the jealousy and wrath of powerful rivals who bring about his disgrace and exile. But this ill luck is of short duration, and Genji is pardoned, is recalled to the capital, and regains his prominence. An encounter with the girl Murasaki Ue had led Genji to undertake her education so that she could be molded into the perfect wife. He builds his sumptuous villa in the capital and installs his several wives in their apartments with Murasaki in the place of honor. But excess of passion takes its toll, and Genji suffers emotional agony because of unhappiness in love. Murasaki, his favorite wife, dies childless, leaving Genji in a world of memories.

Murasaki Shikibu 970 - 1031 CE
Murasaki Shikibu lived from 970 - 1031 Ce First, we should note that Murasaki Shikibu is not the real name of this philosopher and literary figure. It is a 'nickname' derived from two sources: the name of a character in the Genji and the position in the Board of Rites (sikibu) held by her father. So this use of a pseudonym makes this philosopher a somewhat mysterious figure. Second, it is important to understand somethings about the time period in which Murasak Shikibu lived if we are to make any sense of her life and/or work. To help with our understanding, it might we wise to consult this essay by Gregory Smits which offers useful background information and contains links to other sites with relevant information. REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Murasaki Shikibu Murasaki Shikibu, MOO rah SAH kee SHEE kee BOO (A.D. 975?-1031?), also called Lady Murasaki, is the most famous writer of early Japanese literature. Her long novel The Tale of Genji is generally considered the greatest work of Japanese fiction. The novel begins with the romantic adventures of Prince Genji, the "Shining Prince." He exemplifies courtliness and the unique Japanese sensitivity to nature. The tone grows somber as the book follows the next two generations of Genji's family. The themes of death, frustration in love, and a Buddhist sense of human impermanence dominate the story. Lady Murasaki flawlessly handled a large cast of characters, portraying them with a psychological realism that did not appear in Western literature until centuries later.
