Philip Spires commonplace book
I have kept a commonplace book for many years. In recent times, it has become just a workbook to support my research on Philippine education. But now, via a blog, I want to recreate what it used to be, a place where scraps of impressions are filed for future reflection. It's not a diary, it's just a mental scrapbook.

A review of Unless by Carol Shields
Unless by Carol Shields has been my third novel in a row written from the perspective of a self-analytical, self-critical and perhaps self-obsessed female narrator, the other being by Margaret Drabble and Anne Enright. Maybe Carol Shields drew the short straw, because I felt that Reta, the writer-narrator of Unless, internalised everything, so much so, in fact, that the other characters in the book became no more than projections of themselves within her. Maybe that was part of the point.

Edward Eden and Dee Goertz, editors. Carol Shields, Narrative Hunger, and the Possibilities of Fiction. University of Toronto Press. x, 324. $60.00, $27.95 Published only one month before Carol Shields's death in July 2003, Edward Eden and Dee Goertz's Carol Shields, Narrative Hunger, and the Possibilities of Fiction is the first substantial critical study of her work. (The interesting but more anecdotal Neil Besner-edited Carol Shields: The Arts of a Writing Life has also been published.) Among the attractions of the collection is its inclusion of a previously unpublished essay by Shields herself. Adapted from an address given at Hanover College, 'Narrative Hunger and the Overflowing Cupboard' provides a synthesis of Shields's best thoughts on writing and reading, on the need for narrative, and the limitations imposed upon the world's multitudinous 'story hoard' by language, literary theory, and genre. At once dense and lucid, 'Narrative Hunger' reveals not only the breadth of Shields's reading (the piece alludes at various points to Nabokov, Frye, Woolf, George Steiner, Annie Dillard, Barthes, and Eco) but also her abiding concern with what the novel has been, is, and might yet still become. A rigorous critique of the shortcomings of 'realist' and 'postmodernist' discourses, and a passionate defence of the necessity of fiction, it is required reading for anyone who cares about Shields's work and the ideas that shaped it.

Reflections of a working writer and reader
The Republic of Love by Carol Shields
22nd November 2006 In this 1992 novel Carol Shields Fay Mcleod is thirty-five and is writing a book about mermaids, she has never fully committed to a man before . Tom Avery has had twenty-seven mothers and three wives and he works on the radio late at night, taking calls and playing sentimental songs. Just after the mid-point of The Republic of Love Tom and Fay meet and fall in love and get happy and then the narrative becomes boring and a little tedious. This is because in real life when people fall in love and get happy they need to be together with as few interruptions as possible, so nature makes them boring to keep other people away. In Carol Shields' new novel, Larry's Party , delight is just a sweeter form of nervousness By Richard von Busack
N OVELIST Carol Shields sometimes writes about how we carry the key to life's apparently unsolvable mysteries around with us. In The Stone Diaries , her Pulitzer Prize-winning 1994 novel, a quarryman named Magnus pores over one of his only remembrances of his dead wife, Clarentine. It is a photo of the woman posing in 1902 with a few other members of her "Ladies Rhythm and Movement Club." Clarentine had abandoned Magnus many years before, and he doesn't really know why. Indeed, neither of them really knows that it was because Clarentine was a lover of women. In any case, there were no words for that sort of love in Clarentine's timeand no way for her to act on it even if there were. Shields' new novel, Larry's Party (Viking Press), takes place over a 20-year period, from 1979 to 1997, and stars a man who is Larry by name and Larry by nature. Shields suggests that for every Larry Holmes and Larry Olivier, there are thousands of anonymous men who live under the shade of this most unassuming of names. Larry Weller is a passive, quiet Winnipeg florist who becomes a noted artisana maker of garden mazes. Even though he is a professional baffler of other people, Larry seems incapable of learning his own direction in life: he can't chart the safest path through obstacles. To Larry, even delight is just a sweeter form of nervousness. When Larry is moved to a new feeling, Shields writes, "This anxiety he identified, finally, as a welling up of happiness."

INTRODUCTION What happens to a marriage when spouses live apart? This is the experiment undertaken by Jock and Chas over the course of ten months, during which Jock will pursue an internship in a distant city while Chas cares for the children and runs the household. There is nothing extraordinary about this story. Harsh economic realities have forced many families to make difficult compromises just to survive. What is extraordinary is the way the authors of this epistolary novel portray a relationship in jeopardy, imbuing it with the suspense of a mystery and the deep emotion of a love story. ABOUT BLANCHE HOWARD AND CAROL SHIELDS Blanche Howard is a novelist, playwright, and teller of short stories. Her works include
