BIO
Carol Shields is the author of ten novels and two collections of short stories. She is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for THE STONE DIARIES, which was also shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and the Orange Prize for LARRY'S PARTY. Born and brought up in Chicago, Carol Shields has lived in Canada since 1957. Back to top. REMEMBERING Pulitzer Prize-winning Canadian novelist Carol Shields passed away on July 16th at the age of 68, due to complications from breast cancer. She was in the process of writing a new book at the time of her death. Shields was born in Oak Park, Illinois and attended Hanover College in Indiana, earning her bachelor's degree in 1957. Shortly thereafter, she married a Canadian civil engineer named Donald Hugh Shields; they settled in Winnipeg and had five children together. Just one year after receiving a master's degree in literature at the University of Ottawa, Shields had her first novel published, SMALL CEREMONIES, in 1976. She went on to write numerous works of fiction - including the 1993 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel THE STONE DIARIES - plays, short story collections and poetry. Her books also won a Canada Council Major Award, two National Magazine Awards, the Canadian Author's Award, and a CBC short story award. In a number of her books, Shields examined the friendships and inner lives of women. She continued with this theme in her last novel, UNLESS, in which a writer is troubled by her daughter's decision to live on the street and beg for money.

Carol Shields
Carol Shields won many literary awards over the course of a life cut tragically short (she died in 2003 at age sixty-eight, after a courageous five-year struggle with breast cancer that metastasized to her liver).
She is probably best known for The Stone Diaries The Republic of Love and Swann (which I read somewhere was her own favorite of her books).
In The Republic of Love, Fay McLeod, a never-married researcher of mermaids in her midthirties, and Tom Avery, the thrice-married (though now single) host of a late-night talk show at a local Winnipeg radio station, fall in love. These two unlikely lovers alternate in telling us the story of their developing relationship.

Carol Shields READING IS, BY DEFINITION, a solitary act, and our society tends to look askance at those who pursue their pleasures in solitude. But 25 years from now I predict a rediscovery of the book as we know it. Suddenly people will be saying of books: how portable, how compact, how direct, how cost-effective, how intimate, how blessedly silent, how vivid, how enduring, how interactive, how revolutionary! Quote from the Vancouver Village The youngest of three children, Carol Shields was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1935. She studied at Hanover College, the University of Exeter in England, and the University of Ottawa, where she received an M.A. In 1957 she married Donald Hugh Shields, a professor of Civil Engineering, and moved to Canada. She has lived there ever since. In addition to raising five children, all of whom are now grown, Shields has worked as an editorial assistant for the journal Canadian Slavonic Papers and as a professor at the University of Ottawa, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Manitoba, where she has taught for the last fifteen years. She lives in Winnipeg. Shields is the author of several novels and short-story collections, including

A talk with Carol Shields
Interview by Ellen Kanner Carol Shields has an affinity for mystery, for mazes, for riddles. To her mind, we're the biggest mystery there is. "I've felt all my life that I was a kind of maze," says a woman in Shields' new novel "Larry's Party." "There was something hidden in the middle of me, but no one could find it, it was so deeply concealed." As in her 1995 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Stone Diaries," "Larry's Party" tries to make sense of that interior maze, revealing the mad puzzle of our inner lives. "I'm concerned about the unknowability of other people," says Shields from the University of Manitoba, where she is Professor of English. "That's why I love biography and the idea of the human life told or shown. Of course, this is why I love novels, too. In novels, you get to hear how people are thinking. That's why I read fiction." It's also why she writes it. "Birth, life, love, work, death, this is the primary plot," she says and made this life arc exceptional in "The Stone Diaries," a work of fiction shaped like a biography. The novel's heroine Daisy Goodwill is an ordinary enough woman, but Shields makes Daisy resonant. Daisy speaks to and for all women.

Martin O'Malley, CBC News Online A writer can’t get a better book review than the one Carol Shields received for her novel The Stone Diaries in The New York Times Book Review in 1993. “ The Stone Diaries reminds us again why literature matters,” the review said. The novel won a Pulitzer Prize and a Governor General’s Award and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Stone Diaries tells the story of Daisy Goodwill, the fictional heroine who was born in Manitoba in 1905. The book takes us on a journey through the 20th century, examining the life of an otherwise ordinary woman who, thanks to Shields’s deft touch, tells us about the lives of all women. Shields was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. Two years later, the cancer spread to her liver. Speaking on her illness in 2003, Shields said from her home in Victoria, B.C.: "It's made me value time in a way that I suppose I hadn't before. I'm spending my time listening, listening to what's going around, what's happening around me instead of trying to get it all down."
