Shiel July 21 February 17 ) was a prolific British writer of genre fantasy fiction, remembered mostly for supernatural and science fiction , published as novels, short stories and as serials. He was born Matthew Phipps Shiell on the island of Montserrat in the West Indies , and was of mixed race; his mother Priscilla Ann Blake was a mulatto, while his father Matthew Dowdy Shiell was from a partly Irish background, and was possibly also of mixed race. Shiell was educated at Harrison College in Barbados. He moved to England some time after 1880, and changed his surname to Shiel . After some miscellaneous employment he gained in the 1890s a reputation for short stories influenced by Poe . He created the decadent detective Prince Zaleski, and was published by John Lane In a short period he produced his greatest critical success, the science fiction novel The Purple Cloud (1901), and major popular success in

Paddington Station amid a Babel of escaped tongues, when, sitting in
his pigeonhole, he heard the unknown voice before him cry: "Well,
Jim, we're away to the mountain's brow!"
Jim, nothing but a voice, was heard: "Worse luck! I knows Colmoor,
and I knows the Scrubs, and I knows Portland; and of the five I saygive
me Jedwood. Who's the guy in front o' you?"
He was answered by a deep voice, which said:
"I AM WHO I AM". "All right, keep yer 'air on, if you've any left! It's the Lawd Chief Justice, mate! 'E says 'e's 'oo 'e are!" was once a priest" But now speech was swallowed up in hubbub, as the van ran battering down a rough street near the station. Then again Hogarth was whirled into night and space, and, toward morning, after the bumping climb of a van, was bidden to alight on moorland, where he spied, far off, set on a hill, a mighty palace of Romance, all grim, aloof, which was Colmoor.

The Pale Ape and Other Pulses
by M.P. Shiel
Introduction by Brian Stableford
A contemporary of Oscar Wilde, Arthur Machen and Count Stenbock, Matthew Phipps Shiel could surpass any of them in the sheer Decadent luxuriance of his writing. Originally collected in 1911, the ten stories of The Pale Ape and Other Pulses date from the mid 1890s into the first decade of the twentieth century, providing a fascinating cross-section of Shiel's evolving literary work in a rapidly changing cultural climate.
Acknowledged authority on the Decadent movement, Brian Stableford provides a new Introduction to this first republication of M.P. Shiel's The Pale Ape , which will enhance the reputation of one of the most original exponents of Decadence.

Vaila Summary
I asked with what motives, and in what particulars, the malice of his mother and aunt manifested itself. He replied that there was, he believed, no specific motive, but only a determined malevolence, involuntary and fated; and that the respect in which it manifested itself was to be found in the multiplied prayers and commands with which, for years, they had importuned him to seek again the far hold of his ancestors.

jmaxgilbert (July 13, 1999) I read the Shiel story, and remember it as the best in that collection (XELUCHA), but I've always found Shiel'd semi-hysteric prose style somewhat off-putting. It is interesting that you mention Poe, because he comes to mind when thinking of horror stories that use sound as a key element (The Tell-Tale Heart, for one). There was also a good Gothic story from Blackwood's (available in an Oxford UP paperback) concerning a guy stuck in a bell tower that does a convincing job of summoning up the horror of loud sound.

Brian McNaughton (July 14, 1999) Shiel has the distinction of having been the only writer of weird fiction who was crowned a king. (Nyah, nyah, Lord Dunsany!) His father had established the kingdom of Redonda on some speck in the Lesser Antilles and crowned his son (at the age of about 15) before the Brits brushed the claim to independence aside. He was born on the West Indian island of Montserrat, and his mother was a mulatto. (The AHD and OED ascribe no pejorative implication to this: it means she had one white and one black parent.) One wonders why he isn't trotted out to be celebrated during Black History Month, as are so many lesser lights.

He goeth after her. . . and knoweth not . . ." (From a diary) Three days ago! by heaven, it seems an age. But I am shaken my reason is debauched. A while since, I fell into a momentary coma precisely resembling an attack of petit mal. "Tombs, and worms, and epitaphs" that is my dream. At my age, with my physique, to walk staggery, like a man stricken! But all that will pass: I must collect myself my reason is debauched. Three days ago! it seems an age! I sat on the floor before an old cista full of letters. I lighted upon a packet of Cosmo's. Why, I had forgotten them! they are turning sere! Truly, I can no more call myself a young man. I sat reading, listlessly, rapt back by memory. To muse is to be lost! of that evil habit I must wring the neck, or look to perish. Once more I threaded the mazy sphere-harmony of the minuet, reeled in the waltz, long pomps of candelabra, the noonday of the bacchanal, about me. Here Lucy Hill stabbed to the heart Caccofogo, mistaking the scar of his back for the scar of Soriac. In a bath of malachite the Princess Egla, waking late one morning, found Cosmo lying stiffly dead, the water covering him wholly.

Administrative/Biographical History
John Gawsworth was born Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong in London in 1912, the younger of the two sons of Frederick Armstrong, a colonial broker, and his wife Ethel Jackson. Gawsworth was proud both of his father?s Scottish descent and of his mother?s ancestor Mary Fytton, supposedly Shakespeare?s Dark Lady, from whose home, Gawsworth in Cheshire, he derived his pen name. While still at Linton House and Merchant Taylor?s schools in London Gawsworth earned the nickname of Book Boy for his obsessive collecting of books and literary memorabilia. Leaving school at 16 he found employment in a central London bookshop, his poetry gained early recognition and he became an established part of the capital?s literary scene. In 1933 he married Barbara Kentish (who divorced him in 1948) and in 1938 he became the youngest Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a Benson medallist. In many ways this was the height of his career. Throughout his life Gawsworth cultivated the friendship and championed the causes of many writers who he felt were unjustly neglected. Among these writers were the novelists George Egerton (Mary Chavelita Dunne), Arthur Machen, Edgar Jepson and M P Shiel and poets Betram Warr and JohnMetcalfe (both Canadian) and Anna Wickham. From Shiel Gawsworth inherited the throne of the kingdom of Redonda, an uninhabited island near Montserrat, styling himself King Juan I.

As Wilde and Stevenson explored the duality of human nature in Jekyll and Hyde and The Picture of Dorian Gray, Shiel gave two voices to Adam Jeffson, the hero of The Purple Cloud. In some way, Jeffson is chosen, for he tells of hearing the voices from an early age. Adam Jeffson ends up as the first man to reach the North Pole alone where he finds a scene of wonder and terror described in Shiel's evocative prose. Jeffson struggles back to the ship, and along the way, the real horror begins.

Emory Bradley(1904-1991) was a friend of mine, an Atlanta book scout who had a huge 1900-vintage house on Clairmont Avenue in Decatur. I forget just when I met him, but from the 1960s through the 1980s it was my habit to spend a week or two in Atlanta, and Emory and I would drive all over town looking for books in the used-book stores, antique stores, and thrift stores. His sister and her daughter lived in the house as well, and raised pedigreed Persian cats. And in my typewriter collection is a Blickensderfer element machine that had belonged to Emory's father and had been sitting in the attic for decades. Some of these books no doubt came from those expeditions. This list of very minimal descriptions of duplicate books from my collection was generated in 1995 and early 1996. It is intended for the collector or reader who already knows something about what he wants, as I don't have the time or patience for extensive descriptions. On the pricier items I will be happy to provide a scan. Many fields of interest are represented, but the emphasis is on science fiction and fantasy. Most are in at least "Good" condition, and the more expensive ones generally are "Fine". The exlib books are marked. The prices are in $US and include domestic bookrate postage.
