THE LOST CLUB JOURNAL "L'Abri" by Malcolm M. Fergusson The Redondan Cultural Foundation Newsletter exists to promote interest in the life and works of M. P. Shiel, but there is no reason why King Felipe of Redonda shouldn't be celebrated in this journal also; since the editorial addresses of the Lost Club are those of the Cultural Foundation. Hence this enjoyable and informative wartime reminiscence by a peer of Redonda, shorter versions of which were published in Famous Fantastic Mysteries in August 1949 and in A. Reynolds Morse's The Works of M.P. Shiel: "The Shielography Updated", Volume III, Part 2 (1980). Malcolm M. Ferguson was honoured with a dukedom by John Gawsworth, King Juan I, in the first Birthday Honours List in June 1947. Mr Ferguson, who lives in Concord, Massachusetts, is officially retired from his profession of bookseller, though he still deals a little as a sideline. Once a bookman... It is interesting to note that in one of his letters quoted here, Shiel refers to his old associate W.T. Stead, the crusading editor of the Pall Mall Gazette and the Review of Reviews.

I know a thing or two, I know a bank whereon the wild thyme grows!" And if one asks him: "But is that all?" he winks at one, saying: "Enough said; I give you a hint: eye has not seen, never heart fancied; tolling melodious notes, wrung with emotion, it rolls; fairy! drunken! enough said." But is it true? Fairy? If it is a fancy, then it is not of the least interest or importance; but the scientist says "yes, a fact", and the artist with streaming tears calls God to witness it. The scientist's part in art, however, is not seen by Machen, who conceives that art preceded science, that "poetry has nothing to do with scientific truths", does not, in fact, quite know what science is , thinks that the fact "A loves B" is "a scientific truth", so does not know that science is the

Type: Fictitious Country.
Summary: Science fiction author M.P. Shiel was also known as Felipe I, the second King of Redonda, an island nation that may or may not exist.
Posted by: Elliot Feldman
M.P. Shiel M.P. Shiel was a notable early 20th century British science fiction and fantasy author. Originally a citizen of the Caribbean island of Montserrat, at age 15 Shiel’s father crowned him the “Felipe I, second King of Redonda,” a tiny uninhabited island near Montserrat. Some of his critics accused him of perpetrating a hoax against the British news media, while others took it as fact.

30. Prince Zaleski By MP Shiel - An Infinity Plus Review
An author whose lyrical, emotionallycharged style proved the perfect aesthetic vehicle with which to express ideas both grandiose and macabre.

Prince Zaleski
by MP Shiel
Tartarus Press
Review by William P Simmons Admired by Arthur Machen and H.P. Lovecraft for attaining an ethereal wedding of cosmic awe and poetic unease beyond the grasp of his peers, M.P. Shiel (1865-1947) is an author whose lyrical, emotionally-charged style proved the perfect aesthetic vehicle with which to express ideas both grandiose and macabre. Author of around 25 novels and dozens of short stories, including ornamental mysteries, exotic adventures, scientific romances, supernatural horror, and the grotesque detective narratives which this review concerns itself with, Shiel, a great thinker whose eyes looked into the soul even as they gazed towards ethereal heavens (lending a sense of dual mysticism and earthly relevance to his fantasies), interwove philosophical and sociological discourse into carefully structured labyrinths of language. Prince Zaleski , an impressive, attractive offering to the macabre enthusiast's library, presents ample evidence of the title character's decadent mysticism and Shiel's prowess as a stylist, building torrents of acrobatic logic and emotional overflow with solidly layered, carefully sequenced building-blocks of description and pacing. Featuring the three tales which comprised Shiel's original collection, including "The Race Or Orven", "The Stone Of The Edmundsbury Monks", and "The S.S.", the Tartarus edition follows Shiel's single work with the posthumously published "collaborations" conducted by John Gawsworth, who re-worked the outlines of further Zaleski tales in Shiel's papers, resulting in the equally fine if somewhat less decadent

King Philip I of Redonda, seventy-two years of age, runs six miles every day through the Sussex countryside, grows cabbages, roses and Michaelmas daisies in front of his cottage near Horsham. And he hasn't the least idea under what pile of books he has lost his crown.
King Philip under his much better known name of M. P. Shiel published his thirtieth novel, The Young Men Are Coming , last week.
When I stopped him as he trotted, iron-grey-thatched head well down, he was much more disposed to talk about books than about his far-away kingdom.
But a smile spread across his tanned, high-nosed, handsome face, the face of a gipsy king of romance, when I pressed him to tell me how he became a king.
"Come into my cottage," he said. I live here alone, and just now am preparing my own meals, because the woman who 'does for me' is ill. Have a glass of wine. Have a chocolate. Have a cigarette. Now, let's have some light." He illuminated the room by lighting ten candles of the score or so which were scattered in candlesticks about the room.

      Reviewed by Greg Beatty
24 January 2006 At the most recent World Fantasy Convention, S.T. Joshi received a special award for his scholarship. While Joshi has written tirelessly on a range of topics related to speculative fiction, this scholarship has focused largely on the weird fiction tradition. Joshi is a master of H.P. Lovecraft lore, and has provided the foundation of a new critical understanding of the weird tale, establishing or reviving a canon in this area through critical works such as The Weird Tale The Modern Weird Tale (2001), and The Evolution of the Weird Tale (2004), as well as editing a number of single author collections that have formed part of the lineage. The House of Sounds and Others is one of these collections. Specifically, in addition to providing the entire text of Shiel's peculiar novel The Purple Cloud , Joshi provides eight other stories by Shiel. While it is clear why Lovecraft respected Shiel so highly, and why he should be considered a canonical figure in the weird fiction tradition, it is less clear precisely how much this volume will appeal to the contemporary reader. Don't get me wrong. The stories contained herein are masterfully weird, and often a pleasure to read, but most often, they are an intellectual pleasure, rather than an emotional one. This is largely due to Shiel's pace and style, and plays out most fully in

More Information MP Shiel, born 1865 and died 1947, was an important and influential British author and played a large part in the development of the science fiction and fantasy genre. He also dabbled in the detective genre with his series character Prince Zaleski. He is though, perhaps best known for The Purple Cloud which is regarded by students of the genre and collectors as something of a cornerstone title. His early work is, unsurprisingly, rare in 1st issue status, they are also very collectable, indeed every English edition listed in this bibliography is of collectable value. UK editions are generally worth more than American editions.

Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk by M.P. Shiel Reintroduce yourself to another classic author of Arkham House; M.P. Shiel. We have found some excellent reviews by the readers of his day. We'd like to share those with you. Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947) began life in the West Indies of Irish parentage and later studied languages and medicine in London, before the appearance of his first book PRINCE ZALESKI, in 1895. He subsequently wrote over thirty novels including such classic works as THE LORD OF THE SEA, THE YELLOW DANGER, HOW THE OLD WOMAN GOT HOME, and his science fiction masterpiece, THE PURPLE CLOUD. Shiel’s shorter macabre fiction, collected in Arkham House’s XELUCHA AND OTHERS, embraces several of the finest weird tales written during the present century, and compellingly evinces the fanciful imagination and magical command of the English language possessed by this Grand Viscount of the Grotesque. Here's what they said about Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk:
Prince Zaleski: "Mr. M. P. Shiel has in this volume produced something which is always rare, and which is every year becoming a greater rarity - a work of literary invention characterized by substantial novelty. We have Poe's analysis and Poe's glamour, but they are no longer distinct; they are combined in a new synthesis which stamps a new imaginative impression. A finely wrought structure in which no single line impairs the symmetry and proportion. One of the most boldly planned and strikingly executed stories of its kind which has appeared for many a long day. We believe there is nothing in Prince Zaleski which that great inventor and masterly manipulator of the spoils of invention (Poe) would have disdained to father." - Daily Chronicle.
