The winds of heaven mix forever,

      Collection of Author's Work
Collection of Works Brief Biography Percy Bysshe Shelley was one of the major English poets during the Romantic Period in flourishing Western Europe. He was born on August 4, 1792, and died on July 8, 1822 (Barrell). Ozymandias To a Skylark ", and " The Masque of Anarchy "; but his major works were long philosophical poems such as Adonais and Prometheus Unbound . Shelley's unconventional life and uncompromising idealism made him a notorious and denigrated figure in his own life, but he became the idol of the following two or three generations of poets (including the major Victorian poets Robert Browning, Alfred Tennyson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Algernon Charles Swinburne, as well as William Butler Yeats.) He was also famous for his association with contemporaries John Keats and Lord Byron; and, like them, for his untimely death at a young age (Barrell). He was married to the equally famous novelist Mary Shelley.

PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY The eldest son of a rich commonplace baronet, SHELLEY arose in his youth a Revolutionary poet, and even prophesied a modern purely human piety. From University College, Oxford, he was expelled for circulating a pamphlet entitled "The Necessity for Athiesm"; and was thereupon cast out by his family. His Gretna-Green marriage with Harriet Westbrooke (1811), their separation (1814), and his flight with Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin only be mentioned here; but we must add emphatically that Shelley's nature was in a high degree both generous and pure. Upon Harriett's sad death in 1817, Mary became his wife. In the same year (1817), at the insistance of Mr. Westbrooke, Shelley was by decree of Lord Chancellor Eldon declared unworthy to have the charge of his own children. This event, and his suffering health, made him resolve to quit England. Henceforth he and Mrs. Shelley lived a wandering life in Italy, where he saw much of Byron . In 1822 he was drowned in the bay of Spezzia by the foundering of his boat in a storm. His remains, cast upon the beach, were solemnly buried by his friend Trelawny in the presence of Byron and Leigh Hunt. The coffered ashes were buried in the Protestant cemetery at Rome, not far from the grave of Keats, in whose memory he had written

Romancing the truth on poet Percy
    January 12, 2008
A new life of Percy Bysshe Shelley draws several long bows in reaching its conclusions about the great Romantic poet, laments Lisa Gorton. THERE IS AN ODDITY, IN any case, about the biography of a writer. The major event of a writer's life is the work, and the work remains. A study of the life, therefore, depends to a large extent upon interpretations of the work. This is Wroe's justification for writing a biography not of Shelley's life, but of his mind. She declares: "This book is an experiment, an attempt to write the life of a poet from the inside out." What Wroe does not justify, or address, is how one might discover "the life of a poet from the inside out", except by reading the work, and reading it as art. This whimsical fallacy leads Wroe into weirdly literal interpretations of Shelley's poems. She treats them as the biographical jottings of this "Poet" and demands of them, therefore, a deliberateness that works against the nature of most poetry, and Shelley's in particular.

I still have the small dark blue text book Shelley by Richard Hughes, which was forced down my throat at school. There is no suggestion in the volume that Shelley had any ideas whatever. He was interested, apparently, in skylarks, clouds, west winds, Apollo, Pan and Arethusa. The Necessity of Atheism , the first attack on the Christian religion ever published in English. She went on: So Miss Quigly set about cutting with a will. She castrated Shelley far more effectively than did the rowing oafs of University College, Oxford. Every single expression of radical or revolutionary opinion is cut out of the poems which follow. Poems, like Queen Mab In the same breath, they forgot about, distorted or censored his ideas.
