Ntozake Shange *Ntozake Shange was born on this date in 1948. She is An African-American Playwright, author, and educator.
Born Paulette Williams in Trenton, New Jersey to Paul T. Williams (namesake), a surgeon, and Eloise Williams, a psychiatric social worker and educator. She is the oldest of four children of an upper middle class family. In 1956, when she was five years old, her family moved to a then, racially segregated St. Louis, where she enjoyed music, dance, art, literature, and opera; though at a German-American school she suffered blatant racism as a part of the dawn of the Brown versus Board of Education decision. She was an avid reader of Jean Genet, Herman Melville, and Langston Hughes.
She also came in contact with great musicians and singers like Dizzy Gillespie, Chuck Berry, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Josephine Baker, all friends of her parents. W.E.B. DuBois was also a family visitor. In 1961 she returned to New Jersey, completed high school and became increasingly aware of the inequities of the American society on Black females; five years later she enrolled at Bernard College. Soon after this she attempted suicide (more than once) after a recent separation from her law school husband and a deep sense of bitterness and alienation.
Upon gathering herself she earned a bachelor's degree with honors in American studies from Barnard College in 1970, a master's degree in American studies from the University of Southern California in 1973. In 1971 she decided to take an African name: Ntozake means "she who comes with her own things, and Shange means, "who walks like a lion." This change reinforced her inner strength and to redirect her life. Shange has taught humanities, women's studies, and Afro-American studies from 1972-1975 at Sonoma State College, Mills College, and University of California Extension.

This exhibit features a collaboration of paintings and poetry from Atlanta-based artist and art professor, Louis Delsarte, and award-winning, renowned poet and playwright, Ntozake Shange. Delsarte's series of paintings and mixed media abstract landscapes are inspired by Shange's poetry. The artwork moves through time and space creating a relationship between the multiculturalism of Cuba and the Harlem Renaissance reflected in 2006 images. In this exhibit, both the artist and the poet tell stories that reflect the unique energy, transition and movement of the African Diaspora.

By Rebecca Dingo (student paper for EDP 380.D, Miami University), 18 December 1995
After spending a semester looking at Gardner's limited selection of people, I became frustrated at his blatant message that White male creativity is the only one to exist. With his obtrusive message in mind, I felt the need to challenge Gardner and his model to become less Euro-centrally male driven. In order to confront him, I have chosen a person who is neither, White nor male. Instead, she is a Black American woman who I can consider to be, in many aspects, a creative genius. Although I find it incredibly hypocritical to try to fit Ntozake Shange into Gardner's creativity model, for all intensive purposes for the class I will first point out how she does meet his model. Next, in accordance with Black feminists, I will examine why she does not fit into Gardner's creativity model and frankly, why it does not matter that she is not shaped into the model. Further, I will confront the issue that marginal people are rejected society's cannon (i.e. the white male cannon), and how Gardner, in the position of a writer he could have broken down some of these barriers. Ntozake Shange does fit into five of the seven intelligences in Howard Gardner's model. As a performance artist, poet, musician, writer, and politician, Shange's intelligences span the interpersonal, spatial, kinesthetic, musical, and verbal talents.

    Biographical Information
Shange was born Paulette Williams, the eldest child in a professional middle class black family. Her father was a surgeon and her mother a psychiatric social worker. During Shange's youth she was exposed to many of the foremost black intellectuals and musicians of the time through her parents's social interactions with people such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, and W. E. B. Du Bois. She received a B.A. from Barnard college and an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Southern California. During college, she went through a period of depression after separating from her husband, and attempted suicide several times. During her years in graduate school Ntozake Shange 1948– she chose the name Ntozake Shange for herself as a way of connecting with her African roots: "Ntozake" means "she who comes with her own things," and "Shange" signifies "she who walks like a lion." Shange has taught playwriting and creative writing at the University of Houston in Texas.

Written by Ntozake Shange in 1985, the novel is a semi-autobiographical account of an African-American St. Louis family affected by racial tensions, desegregation and marital conflict in the late 1950s. (The author's name is pronounced En-toe-ZAK-kay SHONG-gay.)
Shange was born Paulette Williams in Trenton, New Jersey in 1948.According to a biographical sketch by Mafo Kosseh-Kamada, "In 1956, the Williams family moved to Missouri. Being a gifted child, Shange was sent several miles away from home to school in St. Louis to receive special schooling. For the first time, she attended a non-segregated school. She experienced overt racism and was constantly harassed by the other students.. Seeing reality as such at an early age created a sense of displacement for Shange while becoming the motivational force behind her writing. I started writing because there's an absence of things I was familiar with or that I dreamed about. One of my senses of anger is related to this vacancy - a yearning I had as a teenager...and when I get ready to write, I think I'm trying to fill that

Set in the coastal district of South Carolina. Four women, one mother and three daughters each bring their own distinct personalities as well as struggles to the story. Indigo, the youngest daughter a child of twelve in the beginning of the novel, experiences puberty and struggles with innate gifts for creating life in her many homemade dolls along with a budding mystical music ability. Often times her peculiar behavior is explained away in the expression, Cypress, the middle daughter is a formally trained dancer who leaps, twist and turns right through the story she however struggles with the up and down life of a dancer and attempts to pacify her hurts through sex, drugs and alcohol.
