Anne Sexton - confessional, intimate, direct - her recorded voice as intriguing as William Burroughs' or Ezra Pound's - even fronted a jazz-rock band towards the end, reciting all her pretty ones to a beat. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1928 and living all of her life in or near Boston, her first book of poems, To Bedlam and Part Way Back , was published in 1960; her last, Words for Dr. Y., was published after her death, by her own hand, in 1974. She won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1967 for Live or Die Ari Words

Sexton's poetry ranges from the frankly sensual to the frankly miserable. Her work is accessible, deeply touching indeed, disturbing and full of intricate rhymes and patterns. Sexton has remained popular with readers since her first book, "To Bedlam and Part Way Back," was published in 1960. Several volumes appeared after her death in 1974.

Anne Sexton
Anne Sexton Anne Gray Harvey was born in Newton, Massachusetts. Her father, a lawyer and woolen manufacturer, was an alcoholic. Her mother suffered from unfilled literary aspirations. Anne was not comfortable with school, but she attended a finishing school and was briefly a fashion model. She eloped at nineteen with Alfred Sexton. Upon the birth of their first daughter, Linda, she suffered postpartum depression and was hospitalized. The birth of Joyce, their second daughter, in 1955 led to increased depression. Her therapist encouraged her to write, and Sexton’s first book, To Bedlam and Part Way Back , was published in 1960. Extramarital affairs did not prevent her further attempts at suicide, but she was strengthened by participation in a Boston University seminar with Robert Lowell and students Sylvia Plath, George Starbuck, and an increasingly close friend, Maxine Kumin, with whom she later authored four children’s books.

In spite of alcoholism and the mental illness that ultimately led her to suicide, she created a body of work for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1966. She is one of few writers to have enjoyed the rare distinction of being a popular American poet. In addition to her skill as a writer, she was lauded by audiences as a glamorous and exciting performer of her work. The subject matter addressed in her poetry is very personal and deals with such issues as career and ambition, love and madness, children and godliness. She was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in London and her works include "To Bedlam And Part Way Back," "All My Pretty Ones" and "Live or Die."

    Anne Sexton
All Her Pretty Ones, and then some.. An interpretation of the poetry of Anne Sexton Anne Gray Harvey was born in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1928. After attending one year of college, she eloped and married Alfred "Kayo" Sexton at the age of nineteen. They had their first daughter in 1953, and shortly after, in 1954, Anne Sexton was diagnosed with postpartum depression. Sexton was soon admitted to Westwood Lodge, a neuropsychiatric hospital. One year later, after the birth of her second daughter, she suffered a second breakdown and returned to the hospital. Her children then went to live with her husband's parents. That same year, on her birthday, she made her first attempt at suicide. Shortly after her first attempt, her doctor encouraged her to pursue her interest in poetry as a way to open up and let many of her feelings reach the surface. It was that talent, her passion for writing that gave Sexton the courage to live with her depression for as long as she did. Nevertheless, in 1974 at the age of 46, Anne Harvey Sexton gave up, ending her successful writing career and losing her lifelong fight against depression.
