“Extraordinary Female Affection”: The Ladies of Llangollen and the Endurance of Queer Community
Author Fiona Brideoake Australian National University Abstract Identified over the last thirty years as the exemplary manifestation of chaste romantic friendship, Butler and Ponsonby may appear unlikely candidates for queer recuperation. In her influential 1971 biography, The Ladies of Llangollen: A Study in Romantic Friendship , Elizabeth Mavor stresses her desire to consider Butler and Ponsonby “in terms other than Freud’s”—an obliquely clinical euphemism for genital sexuality ( Ladies xvii). Mavor instead details the following “symptoms” of romantic friendship: “‘retirement’, good works, cottages, gardening, impecuniosity, the intellectual pursuits of reading aloud and the study of languages, enthusiasm for the Gothick, journals, migraines, sensibility and often, but not always, the single state” (

WOMEN WRITERS
Anna Seward (1742-1809)
by Marion Roberts
The eighteenth century was a competitive world, progress being made by the money you had or the notice you attracted; with whom you mixed and to whose gatherings you were invited; how much influence you had and how many connections you made. All these were of much concern. You needed to understand the rules of social rank and have a respect for wealth. Being female in a society which valued female dependency was difficult, but could sometimes be turned to advantage. Women's lives seemed to be a progress of various milestones: maiden, wife, mother, and, if she was unlucky, widow, dowager and grandmother. At each stage, women were expected to bow to the will of providence and do their duty. For Anna Seward to be mistress of herself was paramount: to be self-possessed, self-controlled and self-sufficient, brave and enduring in the face of misfortune. She turned her back on the institution of marriage, which she blamed for her misfortunes and despite several proposals, resolved to lead a quiet, spinster life. But as Robert Burns would write: 'The best laid schemes of mice and men/ Gang aft a-gley '. ^ Top Anna Seward was born in 1742 in the Plague village of Eyam, in the Derbyshire hills, where her father, the Rev. Thomas Seward, was minister. A redheaded, precocious, sensitive child, she could recite Milton at the age of three. She was greatly attached to her younger sister, Sarah. Sarah died, aged nineteen, from an 'unspecified fever' (possibly Miliary Tuberculosis) just before her arranged marriage to Joseph Porter. Porter was a forty-year-old 'merchant from Leghorn Italy' and the stepson of Samuel Johnson. She also enjoyed a close friendship with Honora Sneyd, her 'adopted' sister, who came into the Seward household when the child's father was left a widower and needed someone to care for one of his children.

74. Presentation Followup To Poems By Anna Seward
While researching the life and poetry of anna seward, I began to see important parallels between her familial concerns and her struggles as a poet.
http://www.faculty.umb.edu/elizabeth_fay/leslie.html
Presentation Followup to selected poems by Anna Seward
After discussing the biographical information that I found on Sewardnamely, her father's suppression of her poetry, her significant experience with Honora Sneyd, and her loss of several family members-I began to apply that information to my interpretation of Seward's writing. When I asked the class why Seward's letter to George Harding is notably more expressive and rebellious than her sonnets, Eric remarked that it was a matter of different formal aspects of each genre. Because Seward does not need to work around the Cartesian model in her letter writing and she is not limited to a 14-line form, she can naturally be more expressive in her letters. Therefore, what I had originally viewed as a female writer's intimidation in a traditionally male arena, was perhaps largely due to the different formal natures of two genres. This led me to view the sonnets with greater sensitivity for moments of contained rebellion . For instance, as Rick pointed out, Sonnet IX is quite rebellious in terms of its idea of homoeroticism: "Narcissus pining on the watry shore," and Seward does make reference to Lesbia. With this in mind, I began to consider the possibility that Seward is aware of and drawing from a feminist poetic tradition, one beginning with Sappho... Perhaps her sonnets are less conservative than I originally saw them; after all, she does modify the Shakespeareanarrangement by writing two quatrains, followed by two, three-lined units, instead of the traditional three quatrains, followed by a rhyming couplet.
