41. Interview | Vikram Seth
Seven years ago, vikram seth broke the wrists of the world s readers with his monumental love story set in India, A Suitable Boy.
http://januarymagazine.com/profiles/vseth.html
It's not what I imagined a writer's life would be, which was that you write your books and then it's out in the world and whether or not it's a success or failure will emerge over the course of time, maybe some years and then meanwhile you're writing other books. See Book Reviews on January Magazine. Seven years ago, Vikram Seth broke the wrists of the world's readers with his monumental love story set in India, A Suitable Boy. With an epic set of characters, Seth recreated the whole strange world of the subcontinent. Bruce Chatwin remarked that "(India) will never have its War and Peace." Seth proved him wrong. In his new novel, An Equal Music , Seth has written an exquisite miniature. A first person narrative about the life of a string quartet and the resurrection of a long dead obsessive love. The narrator, Michael, is slightly unstable and somewhat disassociated from the day to day. He sees Julia, his great love from music school, on a passing bus and we're off. While Seth was on tour for his new book, we were lucky to snatch a few minutes over lunch with him. He is tiny, fragile and he was exhausted. But as he spoke his eyes began to sparkle. He revived. An Equal Music is a complete departure from A Suitable Boy . Was this a conscious decision?

Even with a career that has spanned two decades and spawned nine books, Seth remains something of a mystery. No two books of his have been alike. He is a poet, a novelist, a travel writer and even the author of a libretto. Unlike most writers of Indian origin, whose works are obsessed with the subcontinent, Seth seems at home anywhere in the world. "The Golden Gate," the novel in verse that first brought him renown, was a witty and inventive story of Californian yuppiedom; "A Suitable Boy," one of the longest novels ever written in English, is a sprawling, multigenerational tale of family, tradition and politics in post-independence India. Now, five years after that epic effort, Seth has returned with something completely different again. Set in the exalted world of the European classical music circuit, "An Equal Music" is a sensitive, meticulous novel that has something of the delicacy of a haiku. Gone is the grand sweep of "A Suitable Boy" Seth's new book is an intimate and internalized story of love and music.

The Indian Dentist and the Holocaust Survivor: Vikram Seth's "Two Lives"
A biography creates a record of a life, but it must also attempt to assemble many divergent strands and seemingly incoherent fragments of that life into a semblance of a story for a reader. It's hard to do even half-comprehensively with any one life it requires, for one thing, intimate access to the person him or herself, as well as a pretty good paper trail. Vikram Seth, in Two Lives , had such access to not one but two people, who were extraordinary individually but even more so as a couple. It's the story of Shanti Behari Seth, the author's great uncle, and Hennerle Caro (Henny), a German Jewish refugee from the Nazis.
The two of them met during the early 1930s, when Shanti was in Berlin to do a doctorate in dentistry, and he rented a room in the Caros' house. In 1937 and 1939, respectively, they left Germany and settled in London. When the war broke out, Shanti enlisted, and served as a dentist for the troops in the African campaign, and later in Italy (where he lost an arm at Monte Cassino). Henny, for her part, lost her nuclear family at Auschwitz: unlike her, they were unable to get out in time. Henny and Shanti became a couple, and eventually married. When Vikram Seth went to England initially in 1969, he knew very little about his great uncle and his foreign wife. But as he stayed with them and then continued to visit over the course of more than twenty years, he became became quite close to them. They even helped him learn German, initially to pass the entry requirements for Oxford, but the knowledge of the language would become indispensible for the project that became

It is amazing that the same book could leave such different impressions on different readers. My Suitable Boy Mr Banker mentioned tackling the novel in short bursts of about 300-400 pages at a time. To him, Vikram Seth's magnum opus "smelled like the work of an eloquent young Adonis madly in love with his own powdered-and-perfumed self and obsessed with a British hangover".

Indian novelist, poet, travel writer, and author of children's books. The following entry provides an overview of Seth's career through 1995. For further information on his life and works, see CLC , Volume 43.
    INTRODUCTION
Lauded for his versatility, Seth has experimented with such forms as the verse novel in The Golden Gate (1986) and produced works in prose and poetry that remark on such diverse places as China, California, and India. Critics have praised his wit and humor and his ability to evoke a sense of the cultures about which he is writing.
    Biographical Information
Born in Calcutta, India, Seth spent part of his youth in London. Returning to his homeland in 1957, Seth received his primary and secondary education in India. He then studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he developed an interest in poetry and learned Chinese. After leaving Oxford, Seth moved to California to work on a graduate degree in economics at Stanford University. There he met poet Timothy Steele, who profoundly influenced his work—Seth later dedicated his verse novel, The Golden Gate , to him. Seth also spent two years at Nanjing University in China. While there, he published his first collection of poetry
