F or all those of us who stayed awake that night, he was on time. The first thing that strikes you about Vikram Seth, in India to promote his latest novel An Equal Music, is his height, which is of Napoleonic proportions. The writer whom Shobha De predicts will win a Nobel Prize spared more than his promised hour for The Rediff Chat, hosted from New Delhi, and we are pleased to say he enjoyed it as did those who were online with him. The poet and novelist mulled over his answers before keying in his replies. The questions came fast and furious, but Seth kept apace, till time ran out. Happily, he has promised an encore after his next book. Mr Vikram Seth: Hello, I am here for your questions. Natalia: Dear Mr Seth, I really loved A Suitable Boy, which I have just read. I read it in Finnish. Have your other books been translated in Finnish? Mr Vikram Seth: Natalia: I'm afraid that no other novels have been translated into Finnish so far, but An Equal Music

It isn t me you are obeying. Pay what are your own heart s arrears. Now clear your throat, and dry those tears. vikram seth
    http://www.tetrameter.com/seth.htm
    The Golden Gate
It's Friday night. The unfettered city
    Resounds with hedonistic glee.
John feels a cold cast of self-pity
    Envelop him. No family
    Cushions his solitude, or rather,
His mother's dead, his English father,
    Retired in his native Kent,
    Rarely responds to letters sent
    (If rarely) by his transatlantic
Offspring. In letters to The Times
He rails against the nameless crimes Of the post office. Waxing frantic About delays from coast to coast, He hones his wit and damns the post. John looks downwards, as if admonished, Then slowly lifts his head, and sighs. Half fearfully and half astonished, They look into each other's eyes. The waiter, bearded, burly, macho, Says, "Madam, though it's cold, gazpacho Is what I'd recommend. Noisettes Of lamp, perhaps, or mignoninettes Of veal to follow...." Unavailing Are his suggestions. Nothing sinks Into their ears. "Ah, well," he thinks, "They're moonstruck. It'll be plain sailing. Lovers, despite delays and slips And rotten service, leave large tips." Why, asks a friend, attempt tetrameter?

Vikram Seth was born in Calcutta in 1952. He left India to study at Oxford where he earned degrees in philosophy, economics, and politics, and went on to study creative writing at Stanford and classical Chinese poetry in China at Nanjing University.
Vikram Seth has been compared to George Eliot, Leo Tolstoy, and Goethe. His first novel, The Golden Gate, is written entirely in tetrameter sonnets, something that had never been done in the English language before. The Suitable Boy, his prose fiction debut, examined multigenerational Hindu/Muslim conflict in 1950s India and holds the distinction of being the longest single volume ever published in English. But Seth is much more than a literary statistic in the Guinness Book of World Records. Eugene Robinson, a literary critic for the Washington Post called him, "the best writer of his generation." Other critics have compared him to George Eliot, Leo Tolstoy, and Goethe. Since he was first published in 1980, Seth has produced six books of poetry and three novels.

    http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/interviews/ba990623.htm
Vikram Seth, the author of An Equal Music, discusses Indian writing, declares allegiance to poetry, and disagrees with Salman Rushdie June 23, 1999 A few decades ago English-language writing from the Indian subcontinent was primarily the province of Western journalists and travel writers. Of course there were many fine Indian writers R. K. Narayan, Nirad Chadhuri, and Khushwant Singh, among others but they remained largely undiscovered. It took a couple of pioneers, in the form of Vikram Seth and Salman Rushdie, to open the floodgates to the Western reading public. In 1981, Rushdie published Midnight's Children, an almost unbearably imaginative, and critically acclaimed, epic of modern India; in 1986, Seth wrote The Golden Gate, an improbably successful novel-in-verse, inspired by Pushkin's Eugene Onegin and set in California. Those books showed the Western publishing world that Indian writing could sell. Equally important, they gave confidence to the Indian writers who are making waves today.

The Golden Gate by Vikram Seth
"Are the dead, too, defiled by sorrow,
Remorse, or anguish? We who live
Clutch at our porous myths to borrow
Belief to ease us, to forgive
Those who by dying have bereft us
Of themselves, of ourselves, and left us
    Prey to this spirit-baffling pain.
The countries round our lives maintain
    No memoirists and no recorders.
Those who are born are too young, those
Who die too silent, to disclose What lies across the occluded borders Or this bright tract, where we can see Each other evanescently." (13.10) Here's a passage from it that I simply adore, from one of my favourite authors. I didn't realize how many of his books I have on my shelf until I actually thought about it, and I have all but two. On my journey to Montreal, I decided to carry this one with me to read it again. Rarely do I ever pick up a book and re-read it. I remember a professor of mine at SLU talking to us about The Shadow Lines by Joseph Conrad. We had just finished discussing the book, and she told us to hold on to it. To read it again when we were older. And I still have it, but I haven't read it yet.

A Suitable Boy , the book that made Vikram Seth famous, is a grand, 1,349-page novel of newly independent India, religious intolerance, four families drawn into a quest for a proper marriage, and love's imperative. Upon its publication, Seth was declared Tolstoyan by many critics, but in conversation he conceals his gravitas behind an impish wit. At once quick and thoughtful, deadpan funny and reflectively poetic, Seth approached the perhaps dreaded author interview with enthusiastic focus. His intensity and bemusement ran electric across the miles between his place in London and mine in Chicago as we spoke on the phone a few weeks before Two Lives (HarperCollins), a family memoir and a portrait of a marriage, was released in the US.
Born in Calcutta in 1952, the oldest of three children, Seth has roamed far and wide, but his bonds to his family remain strong. His mother served as a judge, his father was a shoe company executive, and both encouraged Seth to write, providing him with shelter and support during the seven years that he worked on the enormous manuscript that became A Suitable Boy . Prior to that epic undertaking, Seth had been a precocious student, traveling to England when he was seventeen to prepare for his application to Oxford. He stayed with his great-uncle, Shanti Behari Seth, and his German wife, Henny, and it is at that juncture that
