edit Early life
Service was born into a Scottish family while they were living in Preston England . He was schooled in Scotland, attending Hillhead High School in Glasgow . He moved to Canada at the age of 21 when he gave up his job working in a Glasgow bank, and traveled to Vancouver Island British Columbia with his Buffalo Bill outfit and dreams of becoming a cowboy . Hired by the Canadian Bank of Commerce , he was posted to the bank's branch in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory . Inspired by the vast beauty of the Yukon wilderness, Service began writing poetry about the things he saw.
edit Writing career
Service became known for his work about the West and the Yukon gold miners . Such works as "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee" made him famous around the world. After having collected enough poems for a book, Service offered a publisher $100 of his own money to publish the work, but the publisher was so sure that the works would be popular (he had already taken 1700 offers for sale off the galley proofs), he returned Service's money and offered him a contract.

Robert William Service, the renowned poet of the Yukon, was born in Lancashire, England, on January 16, 1874. The son of a bank cashier, Service was the eldest of four siblings. At the age of five, Service went to Scotland to live with his grandfather and three young aunts, who showered him with attention. A year later, on his sixth birthday, he wrote his first poem. Service rejoined his family in 1883 when they moved north to Glasgow, Scotland. He attended several of Scotland’s finest schools, where he developed a deep interest in books and poetry, along with a sharp wit and a way with words. A well-rounded teenager, Service also played fullback on his high school’s rugby team. Service’s innate curiosity and fondness for adventure stories inspired an urge to travelto go off to sea and to see the world. Although his parents discouraged this adolescent ambition, his desire wasn’t extinguished (and would one day be fulfilled). Service bided his time with assorted jobsone at a shipping office that soon closed down, then another following his father’s footsteps in a position at a suburban branch of the Commercial Bank of Scotland. Working under light supervision, Service managed to pass the day with reading material he’d snuck in: Robert Browning Lord Alfred Tennyson , and John Keats Service developed into an excellent student of poetry, and attended the University of Glasgow to study English Literature. He was quickly identified as one of the brightest in his class, though he also proved to be a bit audacious. His essay on Ophelia's questionable "purity" in

Robert W Service Think of an Ayrshire poet named Robert who has a global following and whose fame has survived his death. Think of a poet whose fans hold a celebratory dinner each year to enjoy his life and work, and one name Burns springs to mind. However the Alloway born Rabbie died penniless in his mid 30s, while another Ayrshire poet was a multi millionaire living in the south of France when he passed away aged 84 years old. What is more, he wrote the biggest selling poem in history - yet in his home town, he is virtually unknown. His name was Robert W Service , and his life and work is finally getting the recognition it deserves later this year when the people of Kilwinning host a lavish dinner in his name.

He was not born in Canada, nor did he arrive in this land in early childhood and grow up in a Canadian environment. He was born in Lancashire, England, in 1876, and when six years of age moved to Scotland with his parents. He was educated in the city of Glasgow, his higher education being received in the Hillhead High School, and in the University of Glasgow. At the age of twenty, Mr. Service came to Canada and made his way westward from city to city, until he arrived at Victoria, B.C. The next five years he wandered back and forth on the Pacific coast, travelling as far south as Mexico, residing temporarily in every city of importance, and learning by hard, personal experience, some of the deepest lessons of life. Finally he became a clerk in the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Victoria, and subsequently was stationed at other branches in Vancouver, Kamloops, and White Horse in the Yukon District.

Robert Service
Jan. 16, 1874 - Sept. 11, 1958
The following obituary appeared in the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph of Sept. 16, 1958:
A GREAT POET died last week in Lancieux, France, at the age of 84.
He was not a poet's poet. Fancy-Dan dilletantes will dispute the description "great."
He was a people's poet. To the people he was great. They understood him, and knew that any verse carrying the by-line of Robert W. Service would be a lilting thing, clear, clean and power-packed, beating out a story with a dramatic intensity that made the nerves tingle.
And he was no poor, garret-type poet, either. His stuff made money hand over fist. One piece alone, The Shooting of Dan McGrew , rolled up half a million dollars for him. He lived it up well and also gave a great deal to help others.
"The only society I like," he once said, "is that which is rough and tough - and the tougher the better. That's where you get down to bedrock and meet human people."
He found that kind of society in the Yukon gold rush, and he immortalized it.
Too bad there are not more poets like Service, and fewer who seem to be talking to themselves in wispy symbolisms that resemble nothing so much as the maunderings of 3 a.m. drunks at a bar.

I enjoyed an incredible cruise and land trip last week to Alaska. Our tour bus driver recited Robert Service poetry as he drove us into the Yukon! I was thirlled to see this poem of the day and read about Service, the 'Kipling of Canada.'- April Krygowski Donald Reid (4/9/2007 4:12:00 PM) Robert W Service must be one of the great poets of his generation. Indeed I would suggest that his popularity is increasing, certainly here in Ayrshire, Scotland. I've attended several functions lately and been delighted to hear classics such as The Cremation of Sam McGee and The Spell of the Yukon. I spend many a happy night enjoying his wonderful poems.

Robert W. Service
Robert Service is a famous poet who wrote such legendary pieces as "The Cremation of Sam McGee", "The Spell of the Yukon" and "The Shooting of Dan McGrew". Many of his poems focused on the gold rush, in the Yukon, during the early 1900's. " A bunch of the boys were whooping it up at the Malamute Saloon;
The kid that hankles the music box was hitting a jag-time tune;
Back of the bar, in a solo game, sat Dangerous Dan McGrew,
And watching his luck was his light-o'love,
the lady that's known as Lou
."
The Shooting of Dan McGrew, by Robert W. Service Service's first collected works, "Songs of a Sourdough' was published in 1907. In 1909, "Ballads of a Cheechako" appeared. They were enormously popular. These rollicking ballads earned him fame throughout Europe as well as the accolade, "The Canadian Kipling." Among his later volumes are "Rymes of a Red Cross Man" (1916) and "Bar Room Ballads" (1940). " The Trail of '98' (1910) is a vivid novel of men and conditions in the Klondike. He also wrote two autobiographical works, 'Ploughman of the Moon' (1945) and "Harper of Heaven" (1948).
