Welcome
Welcome to Seneca Hill Perennials , a small, mostly-mail-order nursery growing a wide range of unusual plants. We are now accepting orders for spring 2008 shipping. NOTICES (please read before proceeding) (1) Between January 27 and February 17 , orders will be received and automatically confirmed by the website, but no-one will be entering them into the accounting program at this end. Ellen, the owner and the only person working here in the depths of winter, will be off botanizing in South Africa. This means that in a few instances you may order a plant which is in fact sold out. In most cases, we have plenty of stock, so this is not a general concern. When Ellen returns she will enter all orders in the order in which they were received and e-mail you a copy of your order showing all the plants actually reserved for you. Our shopping cart is not "automated" - it doesn't do anything other than collect your ordering information and deliver it to us. It does not reserve plants nor run charges. Thus, it is possible that something you successfully order will already be sold out, even though the website sends you an automated confirmation of the order. The effective recording of your order occurs here, where we reserve your plants and e-mail you a confirmation with an attached copy of your invoice.

Belonging to the Iroquoian linguistic family, the largest division of the Five Nations (or League of the Iroquois) who were first found living in New York. There was a well-known confederation of Iroquois Indian bands drawn from throughout the Northwest that included the Mingo (from the upper Ohio River), Conestoga, Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Tuscarora, and Onondaga (driven into Ohio by early colonists) and the Seneca of Sandusky (who had lived in New York at the outset of the American Revolution). After the war, the Cayuga moved to Ohio, where they were granted a reservation along the Sandusky River. They were joined there by the Shawnee of Ohio and the rest of the confederacy. In 1831, the tribe sold their land in Ohio and accepted a reservation in the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. They were a prosperous people who, preparing to leave Ohio, heavily loaded their baggage (clothing, household goods, tools, seed) onto a steamboat to sail to St. Louis. The trip to their new home took eight months plagued by delays, blizzards, disease, and death. Upon their arrival in Indian Territory, they found their lands overlapped those of the Cherokee. Another band (the Mixed Band of Seneca and Shawnee) also traded their Ohio lands for a tract in Indian Territory which was wholly within the Cherokee Nation. An 1832 treaty- the first made by the U.S. with the immigrant Indians within the boundaries of Oklahoma- adjusted the boundaries and created the "United Nation of Seneca and Shawnee."

This site is dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of , the language of the West Virginia Mingo. Mingo is an Iroquoian language native to the areas of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia. It is a seriously endangered language, with very few native speakers remaining. However, in recent years, there has been increasing interest in the language among Mingo descendants, both in the traditional homeland areas, as well as across the country. Find out about our weekly online Mingo Chat Sessions
The Mingo Alphabet
Throughout its history, Mingo was primarily an oral language. It is only in the last few years that a standardized alphabet has been adopted for the language. These pages explain how the alphabet works, and provide audio links so that you can hear how the letters are pronounced in combination.
Dictionary
Like all languages, Mingo has a huge inventory of words. This dictionary reflects only a small portion of all the words in Mingo. It is perpetually being updated and re-edited. Current Number of Mingo Entries:
Texts
The online Mingo Text Archive provides a wealth of original texts composed by Thomas McElwain. These texts are presented both in the original Mingo and with corresponding English translations. Several of the texts are also accompanied by sound files.

http://www.fingerlakes.com/seneca.htm
Seneca Lake
Seneca Lake was named for the Seneca Indian Nation, one of the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy who used to inhabit the area. The word "Seneca" is derived from the Indian name "Assiniki," which means "place of stone" or "stony place". Seneca Lake has the steepest shoreline of all the Finger Lakes, particularly at the southern end. Two of the main inlets are Catharine Creek at the southern end and Keuka Lake Outlet, which becomes an inlet at Dresden. The flow from many ravines goes into the lake, some of which have spectacular waterfalls, including the falls of Big Stream at Glenora, of Sawmill Creek at Hector, and the Silver Thread Falls on Mill Creek at Lodi Landing. The lake is also fed by many springs along its bottom. Seneca Lake outlets into the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, which joins Seneca and Cayuga Lakes at their northern ends.
Seneca Lake is the deepest and widest of the Finger Lakes. Due to the large water volume, Seneca Lake has a pronounced moderating influence on the air temperature around its periphery. This is the principal reason that the lake has evolved into a prime grapegrowing area. Seneca Lake is rated as an excellent lake for fishing and is particularly known for lake trout. The National Lake Trout Derby is held every Memorial Day weekend on the lake.

Seneca Tribe
How do you pronounce the word "Seneca"? What does it mean?

It's pronounced "SEH-neh-kah." It comes from the name of one of their villages, Osininka . In their own language, the Senecas call themselves Onandowaga , which means "people of the mountain."
Where do the Seneca Indians live?
The Senecas originally lived in New York state. Here is a map of Seneca and other Iroquois territory in New York . Many Seneca people still live in New York today, but others were forced to migrate to Oklahoma or Canada.
Are the Seneca Iroquois people?
