44. Seneca Falls
A short history from the Smithsonian Institute of events surrounding the seneca Falls Convention. This convention marks a major step toward women s
http://www.npg.si.edu/col/seneca/senfalls1.htm
The seed for the first Woman's Rights Convention was planted in 1840, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton met Lucretia Mott at the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London, the conference that refused to seat Mott and other women delegates from America because of their sex. Stanton, the young bride of an antislavery agent, and Mott, a Quaker preacher and veteran of reform, talked then of calling a convention to address the condition of women. Eight years later, it came about as a spontaneous event. In July 1848, Mott was visiting her sister, Martha C. Wright, in Waterloo, New York. Stanton, now the restless mother of three small sons, was living in nearby Seneca Falls. A social visit brought together Mott, Stanton, Wright, Mary Ann McClintock, and Jane Hunt. All except Stanton were Quakers, a sect that afforded women some measure of equality, and all five were well acquainted with antislavery and temperance meetings. Fresh in their minds was the April passage of the long-deliberated New York Married Woman's Property Rights Act, a significant but far from comprehensive piece of legislation. The time had come, Stanton argued, for women's wrongs to be laid before the public, and women themselves must shoulder the responsibility. Before the afternoon was out, the women decided on a call for a convention "to discuss the social, civil, and religious condition and rights of woman." To Stanton fell the task of drawing up the Declaration of Sentiments that would define the meeting. Taking the Declaration of Independence as her guide, Stanton submitted that "all men and women had been created equal" and went on to list eighteen "injuries and usurpations" -the same number of charges leveled against the King of England-"on the part of man toward woman."

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... S > Seneca Indians
Seneca Indians
The westernmost and largest of the five tribes of the celebrated Iroquois Confederacy of central and western New York, being nearly equal in population to all the other four together. This preponderance, however, was due largely to the wholesale incorporation of captives in the early tribal wars , as indicated by the fact that in the ancient council of the confederacy the Seneca were represented by only eight of the fifty chiefs. They called themselves , "People of the Great Mountain", approximated by the French as Tsonontouan , from their principal village of that name, probably near the present Naples in Ontario County. The name Seneca , by which they were commonly known to the English, is according to Hewitt, our best authority, a corrupted form of an Algonquian term originally applied to the Oneida, and signifying "[people of] the place of the stone". The Seneca held the western frontier or "door" of the confederacy, their original territory lying between Seneca Lake and Genesee River, with four principal villages. By conquest and absorption of the Neutrals in 1651 and the

Hilton Central School Students The Seneca Museum celebrates historic Seneca Falls, Seneca County, and the Finger Lakes region of central New York State. The Museum illustrates how the Seneca River and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal powered the rise of industry and fostered cultural development, helping to spread social reform movements. Bounded east and west by the two largest of the Finger Lakes, Seneca County's people live harmoniously with the County's greatest natural beauty. The County is home to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, two dozen estate wineries, and numerous Amish and Mennonite farms. Joseph Smith's revelations began the Church of Latter Day Saints here, and the first Women's Rights Convention was held in Seneca Falls in 1848. The Museum's south entrance is on the award-winning Canal harbor. Many of our visitors, arriving by boat, explore hands-on and interactive displays, intriguing exhibits and artifacts, the play-learning children's center. The Museum's primary purpose is to delight and inform, to lift the imagination as it strikes sparks of discovery.
