Oil on canvas; 40 1/8 x 33 1/8 in. (101.9 x 84.1 cm)
Gift of George F. Baker, 1914 (14.59)
Born in Ireland, William Orpen studied in Dublin from 1892 to 1896 and went to London for further study at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1896. For the rest of his life, he lived and worked in London. There he received a number of honors, including membership in the New English Art Club, a governmental appointment as an official war artist during World War I, and a knighthood in 1918. He continued to work as a fashionable portrait painter during the 1920s, portraying wealthy and prestigious sitters in a traditional, highly polished style that rejected more recent developments in avant-garde art. He also produced a number of realistic self-portraits, both before and after the war, including Myself and Cupid (1910, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh) and Ready to Start (1917, Imperial War Museum, London). This self-portrait, also known as Leading the Life in the West , refers to Orpen's life as a young artist in the West End of London. Orpen stands reflected full-length in a mirror in his studio, wearing a bowler hat and holding gloves and a riding crop. A shelf below the mirror holds paintbrushes and rags, the tools of the artist's trade, as well as several bottles of liquor. Various pieces of correspondence, including an I.O.U. signed by Orpen, are tucked behind the frame of the mirror, further testifying to the pleasures and distractions of the painter's early career. The space of the picture is shallow but complex, with Orpen using his skills as a draftsman to resolve the challenges of surface, lighting, and reflection that he has set for himself.

    Welcome to Whin knowe
Self Catering Holiday Accommodation near Fort William
At "Whin knowe", Banavie, we offer self catering holiday cottages of charm and character near Fort William with a magnificent view of Ben Nevis. It is an ideal base for climbing, walking, kayaking or skiing or just a place in which to relax. Whin knowe was probably the first stone house in the crofting township of Banavie, erected in the early 1800s by clanspeople evicted from the head of Loch Arkaig and re-settled in Banavie.. It has never been sold and is owned by the descendants of its builders. The house is surrounded by nine acres of croft land, roughly half of which is native woodland, predominantly birch and oak. There is a resident population of roe deer which often come close to the house, especially early in the morning and at dusk. Red deer pass through now and again and numerous species of birdlife may be seen. We have two properties available for self catering holiday accommodation, The Barn, our original cottage, and The Byre, which is a new build detached cottage which has been built on the site of our old byre or cowhouse. The cottages are reached by taking the Mallaig road (A830) until it crosses the Caledonian Canal at Banavie. Turn right immediately and follow the B8004 for half a mile. The original house is white and is set back a little from the road, on the right, behind some trees. There is a green and gold sign at the road end advertising the cottages.

    W.B. Yeats Biography
Yeats was deeply involved in politics in Ireland, and in the twenties, despite Irish independence from England, his poems reflected a negativity towards the political situation in his country and the rest of Europe. His work after 1910 was strongly becoming more modern in its concision and imagery, but Yeats never abandoned his strict adherence to traditional verse forms. He had a life-long interest in mysticism and the supernatural, which was disapproved of by some readers, but he remained unrestricted in advancing his eccentric philosophy, and his poetry continued to grow more influential as he grew older. Elected a senator of the Irish Free Republic in 1922, he is remembered as an important cultural leader, as a major playwright, and as one of the very greatest poetsin any languageof the century. W.B. Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923 and died January 28th, 1939 in South France. The Folly of Being Comforted One that is ever kind said yesterday:

In fact, it was Barrett who first initiated the founding of both the American and British Society for Psychical Research. Human Personality: The Subliminal Self - Sir William Barrett FRS - "What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty . . . in apprehension how like a god!"
Hamlet II., 2. OUR CONSCIOUSNESS is the fundamental fact, the most real thing, of which we are aware, and although it consists of a succession of states of mind, no two of which are exactly alike, it is nevertheless combined into a continuous personal identity which we call "ourself." Even when there are interruptions of our self-consciousness, as in sleep, we recognise the self that wakes up in the morning as the same self that went to sleep overnight. So also throughout our life we are conscious of the same identity, the same self, albeit the whole material of body, brain and sensory organs has been repeatedly swept away and renewed. Hence our personality is not a mere bundle of loose sensations: no succession of states of mind, no series of thoughts or feelings can fuse themselves into a single resultant consciousness, with a knowledge and memory of all the other states.

    Speech and Music Connection

    Interdisciplinary Social Rhythm Researchers

    William Condon says:
"Your body's locked precisely with your speech. You can't break out of this no matter what you do. Your eyes even blink in synchrony with your speech." Movements appear to begin, change, or end on the same film frame that a new vowel or consonant begins - within about four-hundreths of a second in the new sound. "The synchrony of the listener with the speaker is just as good as my own synchrony with myself." An auditory-motor reflex in the central nervous system might allow, even force, a listener's movements to synchronize with a speaker's voice far faster than any conscious reaction time.

    A FAVORITE SCRIPTURE
    A FAVORITE SCRIPTURE
    NRSV
I heard once that our will and God's will is like this, "Imagine a person carrying two buckets, one of them filled with oil and one filled with water. Now they are completely filled so that you cannot pour the oil from its bucket into the water bucket because there is no room and besides oil and water don't mix.
Now imagine that one of these buckets is you and your will and your purpose and your plan for your life and the other is God's will and plan and purpose for your life. Before you can know God's will and plan and purpose for your life you're going to have to empty your bucket to receive what God has to give. Now whom do you trust the most to know where real purpose, joy, satisfaction, and peace lie, with you or with the heart of God?"
As Paul writes in Galatians 2:20, "and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me." There is our path to joyful and fruitful living. If we who are followers of Jesus will embrace this teaching, we could turn this world upside down.
Jesus thank you for loving me so much that you would give your life for me!
