Sam Hamill
Papers, 1972-2001 The papers of Sam Hamill were purchased from Copper Canyon Press by the Washington State University Libraries in 2002. Miriam Johnston processed the collection in 2002-2003. Number of containers: 25
Linear feet of shelf space: 25 BIOGRAPHY Sam Hamill is the author of over 30 books, including original poetry, essays, and translations from Chinese, Japanese, Estonian, Latin, and Greek. Included among his works are Nootka Rose (1987), A Poet's Work: The Other Side of Poetry (1990), Only Companion: Japanese Poems of Love and Longing (1992), Destination Zero: Poems, 1970-1995 (1995), Gratitude (1998), and Dumb Luck (2002). Hamill received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Guggenheim Memorial fellowship, a Pushcart Prize, two Washington Governor's Arts Awards, and many other honors. Details of Hamill's earliest years are vague. He was born in 1942 or 1943 to unknown parents. His birth father apparently gave him up for adoption when Hamill was about three years old; he was adopted by Sam and Freeda Hamill, who raised him near Holladay, UT. He attended Los Angeles Valley College and the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has one daughter, Eron, from his first marriage. Along with being a poet and editor, Hamill is also a teacher: he taught inmates in prisons for fourteen years, and participated in artist-in-residence programs for twenty years.

rebecca seiferle Vallejo s poems are like quipus, Incaic devices of many colored strings on which knots were tied in a protowritten language.

Translators' Comments Click here for Poets' and Translators' Biographies Kerry Shawn Keys: Because my knowledge of Lithuanian is very limited, I always rely on texts prepared for me by students of the language and literature who also are fluent in English. I would not translate at all from Lithuanian if I did not feel I had a deep sense of the culture and an ear for the rhythms of the language—I have lived in Vilnius since 1998. Also, I translate my contemporaries and can ask them questions, as I did with Sigitas Geda's poems. And dictionaries and grammar books, and in Geda's case books of fish and fowl. Literal cribs prevent me from following the mistakes or "poetic innovations" that one translator might provide—a frequent occurrence. When I think I am finished, I send my copies to those who assisted me, and in the case of Geda also to a third party who was the publisher's English-language editor. As for "Moment of Awakening," included in the forthcoming Selected Poems of Geda , I just remember how delicate the imagery was, the feeling on my first reading, and I tried to preserve that. It vaguely reminded me of a poem of my own written in Appalachia in the early nineties—"Bluebird"—though Geda's poem is grander in its aspiration.

Book of the Month March 2004 The Black Heralds (translated by Rebecca Seiferle)
(Copper Canyon Press, Port Townsend, WA, 2003. 197pp, pb, $16.00. ISBN 1-55659-199-3). The janus-like nature of Vallejo's first collection has often attracted comment. This, and the fact that his subsequent volume, Trilce , is one of the greatest masterworks of 20th Century hispanophone poetry, has tended to obscure the intrinsic qualities of the earlier book. The poet was 26 when Los heraldos negros Trilce and also the Spanish literary vanguardia in general. The translator here, Rebecca Seiferle, makes a good case for Vallejo's subversive procedures in this work, and is quite combative in her introduction about the poet's former translators and their appropriation of him for their own poetic ends. Those translators however were mainly involved in Trilce and the posthumous poems usually referred to collectively as the Poemas humanos . In the case of The Black Heralds The Poet to His Beloved El poeta a su amada Beloved, tonight you've been crucified

Bitters is an extended quarrel with God, driven by the desire to recover what is banished to the marginal and apocryphal. In her third collection Seiferle claims whatever originates in the earth as an emissary of the divine, whether it is a starving boy in a supermarket or the maggots thriving in the skin of a cat.Against the background and harsh light of the desert Southwest or within the darkness of European history and religion, Seiferle has created a new kind of beauty: tragic, wise, open to every possibility. And just as bitters, the liquor of the title, are colorful, earthydraughts of distilled spirits with an ancient medicinal history, so too are they a fitting metaphor for these darkly humorous and curative poems.
