    Death Valley Scotty
    Prospector, Performer, Con Man Extraordinaire
One of the most popular attractions in Death Valley National Park is Scotty's Castle, a two-story Spanish Villa in Grapevine Canyon that is neither a "Castle" nor, "Scotty's." In fact, the popular 32,000-square-foot compound was built in 1927 by Albert Johnson, a wealthy Chicago insurance executive, who constructed Death Valley Ranch for his health. How Johnson's ranch came to be called Scotty's Castle, is a tribute to Walter E. Scott, who during a lifetime of shameless self-promotion, hustling and swindling, came to be known as Death Valley Scotty.
    Young Walter Scott
Born in Cynthiana, Kentucky, on September 20, 1872, Walter E. Scott spent his early childhood traveling the harness racing circuit with his family. At the age 11, he left home to join his two brothers on a ranch near Wells in northeastern Nevada. Because of his experience with horses, Walter signed on with a horse drive to California in 1884. When he joined a crew surveying the California-Nevada boundary later that year, he made his first visit to Death Valley, beginning his lifelong love with this hot, barren region. In 1885, he took a job with the Harmony Borax Works and quickly rose to the position of swamper on the 20-mule teams that hauled borax across the Mojave Desert. After a stint railroading for the Southern Pacific, he returned to ranch life.

In 1804 he went to reside at Ashestiel on the Tweed, where he ed. the old romance, Sir Tristrem , and in 1805 he produced his first great original work, The Lay of the Last Minstrel , which was received with great favour, and decided that literature was thenceforth to be the main work of his life. In the same year the first few chapters of Waverley were written; but the unfavourable opinion of a friend led to the MS. being laid aside for nearly 10 years. In 1806 Scott began, by a secret partnership, that association with the Ballantynes which resulted so unfortunately for him 20 years later. Marmion was published in 1808: it was even more popular than the Lay , and raised his reputation proportionately. The same year saw the publication of his elaborate ed. of Dryden with a Life, and was also marked by a rupture with Jeffrey, with whom he had been associated as a contributor to the

The Life and Death of a Prostitute in Nineteenth-Century New York.

    Illustrated. 432 pp. New York:
    Alfred A. Knopf. $27.50.
ometime after midnight on a cold spring night in 1836 a beautiful and notorious prostitute, who called herself Helen Jewett, was found axed to death, her corpse slowly roasting from a fire set in her elegant mahogany bed. As ''The Murder of Helen Jewett'' engrossingly details, the crime set off one of the great newspaper sensations of 19th-century America. The 23-year-old Jewett had been a prostitute for six years and seemed to be making a success in the higher end of the business, in the kind of genteel New York brothel where salesmen liked to entertain out-of-town businessmen. Jewett was also quite popular with the young clerks who came to Manhattan from small New England towns to live in nearby boardinghouses and to apprentice themselves to office jobs. She was a familiar presence at the theater, where prostitutes had their own discount section, and she was frequently seen in the daytime parading down Wall Street in her green silk dress and jewels, heading for the post office with a love letter in her hand. The story of Helen Jewett is not a murder mystery, since the case against Robinson remains extremely persuasive. But the story is full of other mysteries, of the kind that interest the historian. Why did Jewett's murder and Robinson's trial elicit such a torrent of newspaper writing, not just in New York but across the nation? How could so many people, including the trial judge, side with Robinson in the face of such clear evidence? And, of course, what was an intelligent young woman like Helen Jewett doing in Townsend's brothel?

    Walter Mouton
    and the Scott Playboys
Walter Mouton Jr. is a legendary Cajun musician whose reputation rests almost solely on his live performances at Cajun dances. His band recorded "The Scott Playboys Special" as a single in 1970, and his music is also heard on the sound track to the film J'ai êté au bal , but he is best known for his Saturday night performances at Breaux Bridge's La Poussière Club. He started playing there some 35 years ago, beginning his weekly gig in the mid-1980s. Mouton, who was born in 1938, put together the first version of the Scott Playboys in 1952 when he was 13. Original members were Rodney Miller, John Allen Guillot, and Leeman Prejean. According to the biography compiled by the Cajun French Music Association , which named him to the CFMA Hall of Fame, the Scott Playboys performed at such establishments as the Colonial Club in Estherwood, the Reno Club in Kaplan, T-Maurice in Bosco, the China Ball Club in Bristol, the Triangle Club in Scott, Jolly Rogers in St. Martinville, and Happy Landing in Arnaudville. The band kept going by changing with the times, adding country and western as well as rock and roll songs to their repertoire to try to meet dance hall requests. But with the revival of Cajun music, the band has for a long time been able to play only the music that they love: Cajun songs with a beat designed for dancing. As Mouton told Dominck Cross in an article in the Baton Rouge
