Raymond Buckland writes: I was perusing the pages at www.sacred-texts.com/pag/scott/lodw00.htm and read that Scott's "Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft" was published by John Murray in "Murray's Family Library." I wondered where this came from. I have a first edition copy of Scott's book and it is No. XI in HARPER'S Family Library. I also have a first edition of the later (1832) "Brewster's Letters on Natural Magic addressed to Sir Walter Scott," No. L in the series. There is no mention on either book of a Murray's Family Library. Since this text was not scanned at sacred-texts, I'm not sure how this came about. Possibly a reader can clear this up. - J.B. Hare

was born in Edinburgh, as the son of a solicitor Walter Scott and Anne, a daughter of professor of medicine. An early illness - polio - left him lame in the right leg. Six of his 11 brothers and sisters died in infancy. However, Scott grew up to be a man over six feet and great physical endurance. In 1802-03 appeared Scott's first major work, MINSTRELSY OF THE SCOTTISH BORDER. As a poet Scott rose into fame with the publication of THE LAY OF THE LAST MINSTREL (1805) about an old border country legend. He had burned its first version, when his friends did not like it. Scott returned to the poem in 1802, when a horse had kicked him and he spent three days in bed. The Lay of the Last Minstrel The Lady of the Lake , including 'Hail to the Chief who in triumph advances!" were put to music by James Sanderson (1769-1841) and became the march traditionally played to honor the president of the United States. In the 1810s Scott published several novels anonymously or under the pseudonym Jebediah Cleisbotham or 'Author of Waverley.' From this period date such works as WAVERLEY (1814), dealing with the rebellion of 1745, which attempted to restore a Scottish family to the British throne. The book set the classic pattern of the historical novel. It had a hero, whose loyalty is split between two rulers and two ways of life. Scott continued with GUY MANNERING (1815) and TALES OF MY LANDLORD (1816), consisting of

WALTER SCOTT AND MUSIC My series on the interface between various British literary figures and music has so far concentrated on a variety of writers from Jane Austen to J. B. Priestley whose works have, by and large, inspired British composers. With Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) matters are a little different. He did, and to an extent still does, inspire composers from these islands but his influence extended considerably wider than that. In many respects he was one of the high priests of Romanticism. In this he rode to some extent on the back of Europe-wide interest in Scotland, originally fuelled to a degree by the writings of Ossian and – at least until the railways came along – scarcely at all by actually visiting the country. Scott, who was not, incidentally, musical himself (though he liked listening to national songs and many "songs" figure in his novels) had an unusual literary career. The first half of it was devoted to writing poems and ballads. Only from around 1814 did he turn to writing the novels on which, arguably, much of his reputation was founded. Both branches of his literary output have yielded much for composers whose music was stirred by the Scotsman.

"I shall proffer you large proffers," said Sir Lancelot, "that is to say I shall unarm my head, and the last quarter of my body, all that may be unarmed, and I shall let bind my left hand behind me, so that it shall not help me, and right so I shall do battle with you." FOREWORD. A life of Walter Scott requires no apology. He is by far the greatest figure in Scottish literature, and has only one rival in the English tongue. Without making any claim to finality, this volume is intended to represent that life in clearer outline than Lockhart's voluminous records succeed in doing, and with greater accuracy than they attempted to reach. In particular, it endeavours to give an equitable and intelligible account of business transactions which were often much simpler in themselves than are the interpretations which have been loaded upon them - and to be equitable, not only to Scott himself, but to others who by the accident of association with him were drawn into the light of the same publicity. S. FOWLER WRIGHT.

from A History of English Literature by Robert Huntington Fletcher Preface How to Study Tabular View Assignments from Chapter X. Period VIII. The Romantic Triumph, 1798 To About 1830 WALTER SCOTT. In the eighteenth century Scotland had contributed Thomson and Burns to the Romantic movement; now, early in the nineteenth, she supplied a writer of unexcelled and marvelous creative energy, who confirmed the triumph of the movement with work of the first importance in both verse and prose, namely Walter Scott. Scott, further, is personally one of the most delightful figures in English literature, and he is probably the most famous of all the Scotsmen who have ever lived. The amount and variety of his literary work was much greater than is understood by most of his admirers today. He contributed largely, in succession, to the 'Edinburgh' and 'Quarterly' reviews, and having become a secret partner in the printing firm of the Ballantyne brothers, two of his school friends, exerted himself not only in the affairs of the company but in vast editorial labors of his own, which included among other things voluminously annotated editions of Dryden and Swift. His productivity is the more astonishing because after his removal to Abbotsford he gave a great part of his time not only to his family but also to the entertainment of the throngs of visitors who pressed upon him in almost continuous crowds. The explanation is to be found partly in his phenomenally vigorous constitution, which enabled him to live and work with little sleep; though in the end he paid heavily for this indiscretion.

Alexander Campbell Sir Walter Scott FROM THE MILLENNIAL HARBINGER. Number I.-Volume IV. January 1833. Sir Walter Scott. SIR WALTER SCOTT, the star that beamed with such effulgence in the heavens of romance, has vanished from the gaze of mortals. The lovers of poetry and fiction are in deep mourning; [26] and all the votaries of Waverly The world often most admires that which has the least true merit. If some extraordinary genius, or some giant of prodigious stature, appear upon the stage, the pigmies are all amazed, and know not how to limit their admiration. But if real goodness, which is only another name for real greatness, happen to appear among us, only one in a thousand sees any thing divine in it. Yet even the giddy multitude, in some reflecting moment, is constrained to admit that no person is worthy of praise for his intellectual stature, more than for his animal dimensions: and that matters of choice, and not of contingence, are the proper subjects of praise or blame. But no man is a scholar, a poet, or an author by the mere force of genius. Much labor, care, and toil are necessary to furnish the most splendid genius with the materials for future creations. Grant all this, and more: the miser too is laborious; so are all the votaries of pleasure. Neither talent nor toil, apart, or united, are worthy of admiration, unless consecrated to some high end, pregnant with real good to man.
