Sir Walter Scott
Scott, the "great romancer," was trained as a lawyer. Steeped in the traditions and customs of the Scottish highlands, Scott's novels are backdropped with the events of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and set with scenes laid out in remote and uncultivated districts. His novels are filled with superstitious and mannerly characters, entangled with the intrigues of war, religion, and politics. Though Scott wrote verse he is at his best when writing prose. Scott "told his story in incident, and not in reflection or in adjective." Scott discovered that, indeed, facts are better than fiction; he wrote of events from real life and not "the fine-spun cobwebs of the brain." Scott's writings were politically based, he equated the mobs of the previous centuries to the "modern rabble" of his day, those who were rising up against tradition and custom such as the mobs of the French Revolution. He backed his friends who had a "horror of all reform, civil, political or religious." During his time he was a most popular figure with numerous readers and admirers, "quarrelling which of his novels is the best, opposing character to character, quoting passage against passage." William Hazlitt thought Scott to be a genius, but one "who took the wrong side and defended it by unfair means."

A prominent Edinburgh citizen during the nineteenth century who was (and still is)an incredibly successful literary figure. He was able to make his mark on Edinburgh in more ways than one.
You don’t have to walk along Princes Street just to see Sir Walter Scott for he can be found somewhere a lot closer to home. It was thanks to Edinburgh’s most prolific writer that Scotland got to print its own banknotes. Celebrating this event, the portrait of Sir Walter Scott continues to be found on every single note. A successful novelist and poet (during his own lifetime), Sir Walter Scott was born in the year 1771 in Edinburgh’s Old Town. His vast body of work include Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake, the Heart of Midlothian and the stories entitled ‘Waverley’. This is where the name ‘Waverley’ came from when the restructured railway station was launched. Sir Walter Scott organised the momentous visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822, an event which is famed for making clan-tartan wearing highly fashionable. It is ever since the King’s visit in the early nineteenth century that the fabulous kilt began to be commonly observed as Scottish national dress.

The Sir Walter Scott Way is a 92 mile / 148 kilometre or 94 mile / 151 kilometre cross-country walk between Moffat in South Central Scotland to Cockburnspath on the South East Scottish Coastline. It runs through lowland valleys, by lochs and reservoirs, alongside the River Tweed and its tributories, over several Corbetts and through communities steeped in history and interest. Along its length there are numerous connections with Sir Walter Scott , one of Scotland's greatest writers. It was indeed this countryside that inspired many of his great poems and novels, and where he spent a very large part of his life. The Way follows for a significant length the waymarked line of the eastern half of the Southern Upland Way and as such it is not a totally unique route. However the way was defined with a specific historical connection as well as a distance and accessibility that suit the growing number of walkers undertaking 5 to 7 day long-distance walking routes. The Way passes through some of Scotlands most attractive, varied but also under sold countryside. There will be a warm welcome provided to all who come and great Border hospitality offered.

. Scotland is lovely - The Trossachs are exceptional.
Visit 'The Trossachs' and see 'Scotland in Miniature' (Phone 01877 376 316 to check sailings before making a long journey for your sail on the steamer ) SS Sir Walter Scott is a major attraction to visitors in the Trossachs but few realise the story behind the old steam ship which has plied these waters for over 100 years. The Loch Katrine passenger steamers have been plying the loch since 1843 when the Paddle Steamer Gypsy was launched - prior to the this galleys were used on the loch. PS Gypsy did not last long - she disappeared one night and has not been seen since. The redundant oarsmen were suspected of scuttling her and were taken to court. They claimed it was the Water Bull of the loch that was protective towards the galleys but destructive to competitors' boats by holing them with its horns. Their Gaelic dialect was beyond the court translator and caused such confusion that the case was thrown out with the verdict that the boat was sunk by persons or things unknown. The galleys did not last much longer when another paddle steamer, the PS Rob Roy, was launched in 1845. A few years later this was followed by a second PS Rob Roy and much later by the present screw driven SS Sir Walter Scott, which still sails the loch and gives pleasure to so many visitors.

The Writers Walter Scott Biography Scott was a poet, novelist, ballad-collector, critic and man of letters, but is probably most renowned as the founder of the genre of the historical novel, involving tales of gallantry, romance and chivalry. Beginning with the publication of Waverley in 1814, one of the most significant books of the nineteenth-century, his anonymously published Waverley novels proved hugely popular in Europe and America, and established his reputation as a major international literary force. It is a measure of Scott's influence that Edinburgh's central railway station, opened in 1854, is called Waverley Station. Scott spent his childhood years in Edinburgh, with occasional extended visits to his grandfather Robert Scott's farm in Tweeddale in the Borders, where he became versed in his family's history, and in Borders culture in general. He attended the famed Edinburgh High School, and then followed in his father's wake by taking a law degree at Edinburgh University, being called to the Bar in 1792. At 25 he began writing, first translating works from German then moving on to poetry. In 1797 he married the daughter of a French refugee, Charlotte Carpenter, with whom he had four children. Five years later, he published a three-volume set of collected Scottish ballads

The immense literary fame of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) ensured the survival of a huge number of his letters, their topics ranging from old ballads to the major political questions of the day, and Scott himself kept very many of the letters he received. The present Union Catalogue, compiled by Professor Jane Millgate (University of Toronto), provides for the first time records for over 14,000 letters written by or to Scott that have proved traceable worldwide in autograph, transcript, or printed form, including the nearly 10,000 letters held by the National Library of Scotland.
