Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) Writer and poet, a born storyteller and master of dialogue, one of the greatest historical novelists, whose favorite subject was his native Scotland. Scott wrote twenty-seven historical novels. His influence is seen among others in the works of James Fenimore Cooper Alexandre Dumas , and Aleksandr Pushkin "Love rules the court, the camp, the grove,
And men below, and saints above;
For love is heaven, and heaven is love."

(from The Lay of the Last Minstrel Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh, as the son of a solicitor Walter Scott and Anne, a daughter of professor of medicine. An early illness - polio - left him lame in the right leg. Six of his 11 brothers and sisters died in infancy. However, Scott grew up to be a man over six feet and great physical endurance. In 1802-03 appeared Scott's first major work, MINSTRELSY OF THE SCOTTISH BORDER. As a poet Scott rose into fame with the publication of THE LAY OF THE LAST MINSTREL (1805) about an old border country legend. He had burned its first version, when his friends did not like it. Scott returned to the poem in 1802, when a horse had kicked him and he spent three days in bed. The Lay of the Last Minstrel The Lady of the Lake , including 'Hail to the Chief who in triumph advances!" were put to music by James Sanderson (1769-1841) and became the march traditionally played to honor the president of the United States.

Walter Scott , the son of a solicitor, was born in Edinburgh in 1771. When a young boy, Scott contracted polio and was sent to his grandfather's farm at Sandyknowle to recuperate, and therefore got to know the Border country which had a profound influence on his future writing.
Educated at Edinburgh University , Scott became a law clerk in his father's office. After 1792 Scott worked as an advocate but his main ambition was to become a writer. In 1797 he published a translation of Burger's The Wild Huntsmen . This was followed by the three volume, Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-1803) and The Lay of the Last Minstrel

What 2.0 Means to Me
Technically Speaking lengthy and largely critical review of the Library 2.0 discussion I disagree, or, rather, I agree that this is a simple way of putting it - too simple, really. While most of the discussion around Library 2.0 has noted its connection to the (equally arcane) Web 2.0 discussion, to me the key is interaction and willingness to enhance library services in collaboration with our users.

Sir Walter Scott
Scottish Novelist and Poet
Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive! Sir Walter Scott was born on August 15, 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Scott created and popularized historical novels in a series called the Waverley Novels. In his novels Scott arranged the plots and characters so the reader enters into the lives of both great and ordinary people caught up in violent, dramatic changes in history. Scott's work shows the influence of the 18th century enlightenment. He believed every human was basically decent regardless of class, religion, politics, or ancestry. Tolerance is a major theme in his historical works. The Waverley Novels express his belief in the need for social progress that does not reject the traditions of the past. He was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings. Central themes of many of Scott's novels are about conflicts between opposing cultures. Ivanhoe (1819) is about war between Normans and Saxons. The Talisman (1825) is about conflict between Christians and Muslims. His novels about Scottish history deal with clashes between the new English culture and the old Scottish. Scott's other great novels include "Old Mortality" (1816), "The Heart of Midlothian" (1819), and "St Ronan's Well" (1824). His Waverley series includes "Rob Roy" (1817), "A Legend of Montrose" (1819), and "Quentin Dunward" (1823).

Sir Walter Scott
Walter Scott was born in 1771 in Edinburgh, one of twelve children of a solicitor. His interest in Scottish legends and history began early, when he lived on the Borders with his grandparents. He attended Edinburgh University, studying arts and law, and by the age of sixteen was already collecting and translating old ballads. He followed his father’s career, and, in 1797, married Margaret Charlotte Charpentier. Scott’s first major work, Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, appeared in 1802-03. He gained fame as a poet with the publication of The Lay of the Last Minstrel in 1805, which made him the most popular writer of the period. He followed its success by the poems Marmion, a historical romance, The Lady of the Lake, and The Lord of the Isles. The debts Scott inherited from his friend James Ballantyne, with whom he had started a publishing business, forced him to become very prolific in order to earn money. Through the 1810’s, Scott published many historical novels annonymously, such as Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian, Rob Roy, and Ivanhoe, for which he is probably best remembered. His influence on later writers was profound. He was the first to use the historical novel genre, and inspired many major authors in the second half of the nineteenth century. Walter Scott was created a baronet in 1820, and died September 21, 1832, having paid all his debts with the profits from his writing.
