    Salute
    James Schuyler
Past is past, and if one remembers what one meant to do and never did, is not to have thought to do enough? Like that gather- ing of one each I planned, to gather one of each kind of clover, daisy, paintbrush that grew in that field the cabin stood in and study them one afternoon before they wilted. Past is past. I salute that various field. Submitted by Larry Bole Added: Last Read: Viewed: 2439 times

Schuyler, James Weldon Johnson Walter White, NAACP, Countee Cullen, Eugene O'Neill To James Weldon Johnson Baltimore, July 29, 1919 Dear Mr. Johnson: Have you anywhere in your files an estimate of the total wealth of the Negroes of the United States —that is, on the same basis that national wealth is reckoned? I have seen something of the sort, but I don't know where. They probably own at least a billion of property. Here in Maryland they have got very rich. Your prophecies of serious race conflicts begin to come true. I hope you let me see what you write about the Washington affair. I hear that the same sort of thing was very narrowly averted in Richmond. My guess is that Baltimore will be the last city to see anything of the sort. Despite a segregation ordinance, there is less race feeling here than anywhere else I know of. We have had but one race riot in years, and that was between Poles and Jews.

Checkout What would happen to the race problem in America if black people could suddenly become white? Black No More, George S. Schuyler's satiric romp, is the story of Max Disher, a dapper black rogue of an insurance man who, through a scientific transformation process, becomes Matthew Fisher, a white man. Matt dreams up a scam that allows him to become the leader of the Knights of Nordica, a white supremacist group, as well as to marry the white woman who rejected him when he was black. Black No More is a hysterical exploration of race and all its self-serving definitions. Ishmael Reed, one of today's top black satirists and the author of Mumbo Jumbo and Japanese by Spring, provides a spirited introduction.

biographical information
(Source: University of California, San Diego, Geisel Library and Mandeville Special Collections Library) James Schuyler, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and member of the
New York School circle of poets and painters was a New York City resident
since 1950. Schuyler moved among prominent artists and writers of the
period and worked as an art critic and associate editor for Art News
from 1955 to circa 1962, and in the Museum of Modern Art beginning in
1957. He published his first novel, Alfred and Guinevere, in 1958 and
continued a distinguished career, publishing twelve books of poetry and
two additional novels, including A Nest of Ninnies with John Ashbery.
Schuyler's collection of poems entitled The Morning of the Poem won a
Pulitzer Prize in 1981.
Born on November 9, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, James Marcus Schuyler experienced a peripatetic childhood. His family lived for a time in Downer's Grove, a suburb of Chicago, then Washington, D.C., and later Chevy Chase, Maryland. His parents divorced early in Schuyler's childhood and he remained with his mother and step-father. At the age

The Letters of James Schuyler to Frank O'Hara edited by William Corbett
Unless we find a way to preserve or recover old e-mails, we are likely to see, within our lifetimes, the death of a genre almost as old as the novel: the book of letters. E-mail did not accomplish this alone; letters have been slowly sapped of their vitality by telephones, cars, the airplane, and anything else that has made it easier for people to reach each other without sitting down in front of a piece of paper. Selected Letters Et cetera. The majority of the book consists of cleverly written anecdotes about a huge number of people identified, one after another, in footnotes who I at least found impossible to keep straight. Otherwise, we get gossip, a catalogue of books read, movies seen, meetings arranged, and updates on the progress of work and travel very similar, I suspect, to what a random sampling of our e-mails would look like, and just as interesting to an outsider. Selected Letters , the rest are for his biographer. Anyone who wants to understand and appreciate the relationship between these two men would do better reading the wonderful poems they dedicated to each other.

POLITICAL AND OTHER TROUBLES.
In 1855, the first Free-State elections were held, and here too, some political frauds were committed, as at a caucus held by them, more ballots were cast than there were voters present. A Free-State legislature at Topeka was elected, and from the Council City district, Henry Todd and Wm. Toothman were elected members of the Lower House; and Lucien Fish of the Senate. Early the next year, this legislature met and elected Philip C. Schuyler Secretary of State, but as the United States Congress did not recognize its legality, he never fulfilled the duties of the office. The first military company was organized in 1855, and was called the "Old Free-State Guards." Henry Todd was Captain; Wm. Toothman, First Lieutenant; G. I. Drew, Second Lieutenant, and L. D. Joy, Orderly Sergeant. It was about the close of the year when the organization of the company was completed, after which it marched to the defense of Lawrence at once. Gen. Lane, Pomeroy, John Brown, Schuyler and Winchell were already there and manifested great joy at the appearance of the company. Each of its members was armed with a six-shooter rifle. These guns proved to be utterly worthless, and Loton Smith took them to Missouri, where he represented himself to be a friend to the Pro-slavery party, and sold them for a high price, and with the proceeds bough good rifles for the company. During the year 1856, the troubles between the Free-State men and the border ruffians assumed a serious aspect. In June another military company was organized by the free-soilers. A portion of Buford's Company from the Southern States was sent to drive the Free-State men from the country. They camped on One Hundred and Ten Creek, where they remained all summer, made several raids on the Free-State settlers and committed many outrages. Joseph McDonald was robbed of a wagon-load of provisions, on the Santa Fe trail, while
