Aside from two years at business school in Chicago, Schmitz lived in Germany until 1938, leaving before World War II broke out in Europe in 1939. During World War II, Schmitz served as an aerial photographer in the Pacific for the United States Army Air Corps . After the war, he and his brother-in-law ran a business which manufactured trailers until they broke up the business in 1949. Schmitz is best known as a writer of space opera , and for strong female characters (such as Telzey Amberdon and Trigger Argee ) that didn't fit into the damsel in distress stereotype typical of science fiction during the time he was writing. His first published story was Greenface , published in August 1943 in Unknown . Most of his works are part of the "Hub" series, though his best known novel is The Witches of Karres , concerning juvenile "witches" with genuine psi -powers and their escape from slavery Karres was nominated for a Hugo Award . In recent years, his novels and short stories have been republished by

Dictionary of Literary Biography on James H(enry) Schmitz James Henry Schmitz as a writer of science fiction combines acceptable improbabilities with good prose. His work, often republished, is obviously enjoyed by his readers, and the comments of the editors of anthologies indicate that his appeal extends to writers as well. Schmitz was born of American parents in Hamburg and spent the first twenty years of his life in Germany. He studied briefly in the United States and then returned to work in Germany for a few years. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, he began his career as a writer in 1943. He did not become a full-time writer until 1959. The hallmarks of a Schmitz story are capable agents who, even under the most stringent circumstances, never forget an important detail or piece of equipment and who, therefore, bring their missions to successful ends; involved, obscure dangers; convincingly inimical "monsters"; and unusual protagonists. The true significance of events tends to be revealed at the end of the tale, and, with a few exceptions, the narratives move swiftly. There is no Schmitz "formula"; it is more to the point to speak of favorite devices. One such device is the destruction of the enemy by means of its communication system, for example in "The Searcher" (1966; collected in

Telzey Amberdon
by James H. Schmitz Publisher: Baen March 2000 Printing: February 2002 ISBN: Format: Mass market Pages: I've been reading a lot of dark, intense, and literary books lately and felt like a break and something lighter, so I turned to this book, which I picked up on a whim in the bookstore after reading Susan Stepney's review James H. Schmitz was a prolific and much-loved author of SF short fiction in the 1960s and early 1970s, who has since fallen almost completely off the radar of SF readers due in part to the difficulty of staying in print as a primarily short-fiction writer with only a couple of novels. This is the first of a series of Baen paperbacks collecting Schmitz's short fiction, edited by Eric Flint and Guy Gordon. This volume includes all of the stories from The Universe Against Her and The Lion Game , as well as a few other stories and an afterword and background essay by the editors. The hero and title character, Telzey, is a fifteen-year-old law student in the far-future universe of a star-spanning loose federation called the Hub. She discovers in the first story that she has previously unknown psychic powers, which develop considerably over the course of the collection. The stories are space opera, not particularly challenging or deep, generally built around a puzzle that Telzey has to figure out or a villain that she has to defeat, but they're still notable for a couple of reasons. First, Schmitz has a good grasp of pacing and mostly avoids the infodump, dropping one into both the world and the action without a lot of preliminaries. The details of the world are left to the background, and yet while the structure of Telzey's world felt sketchy, I never felt confused by it. Similarly, while the stories often pose ethical challenges, Telzey simply makes her decisions and the reader is left to agree or disagree as they choose, without the extended defense of good and evil so often seen in space opera. Schmitz as the writer adroitly gets out of the way and letting the reader read the story.

This site is dedicated to Science Fiction author James H. Schmitz (1911 - 1981). Schmitz was not a prolific author, publishing about seventy works from 1943 through 1974, including only four novels. But there is a certain something about a Schmitz story that his fans have been trying to pin down for over thirty years. Like listening to Mozart or Beethoven, when you read a Schmitz story you know exactly who wrote it. (Sorry for the mixed metaphor there.) What you'll find at this site is reference material to Schmitz stories. There is a complete Bibliography , lists of series like The Federation of the Hub, major characters like Telzey, Trigger, and "Bad News" Quillan, and monsters like the Janandra. All of these have links to the stories where they appear, and sometimes even artwork. Finally, we have several works about Schmitz , including an interview and essays on Schmitz' work. Start with the bibliography and follow the links to the stories.

James H. Schmitz was the author of a number of remarkable science fiction novels and stories. Previously even his out-of-print works retained an enthusiastic following. I enjoy them for their bold female characters (surprising even by today's standards), and also for the author's deft handling of psionics. Many of Schmitz' writings fall into one of two universes and have many interlocking characters. He wrote one set of tales set in the universe of the "Agent of Vega" series. He created a different universe in the "Federation of the Hub" series which includes over two dozen stories and novels. His writings exist as eight novels and fifty-odd stories in several collections, most of which were published between 1960 and 1974. Finding copies of the out-of-print works of James H. Schmitz:

The Demon Breed
by James H. Schmitz
Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson Analog Science Fiction
as The Tuvela Macdonald, London; 1969 157 pages January 2002
This is a lovely novel. A sensuous, subtle, and high-paced adventure with an engaging heroine and a wealth of interesting creatures in a small space. The novel takes place almost entirely upon a floating atoll on the ocean world of Nandy-Cline: a floatwood drift with its green-shadowed tree-boles and vines and great nests and rookeries; in the sea around the atoll and the sheltered reedy lagoon encircled by the floatwood. An elderly man, Ticos Cay, has been doing pharmaceutical research alone on this floatwood island. He is expecting research scientist Nile Etland to arrive shortly. But before she arrives, Ticos Cay is captured by an advance invasion force of the alien, amphibian Parahuans which has moved secretly into the vast ocean of Nandy-Cline. The Demon Breed opens with Ticos Cay being interrogated by Koll, a Parahuan holding the high rank and condensed physiology of a Great Palach, one of the Everliving: doll-sized, smart, and murderously vicious. Koll is second in command of the Voice of Action in the secret invasion force. He states: "You predicted that one of the so-called Tuvelas would attempt to contact you here."
